Visit to Rabble.ca in Second Life

Robespierre

Rabble.ca, which hosts this outstanding discussion forum we know as Babble, has an equally outstanding location in the virtual world known as Second Life http://secondlife.com/ . I visited Rabble.ca's "sim" today to have a look around, see photos below.

At the Book Lounge area I noticed there had been an author discussion in May. I am looking forward to the next one there, I really love Second Life for the discussion in real-time using the virtual world to simulate something that isn't very far from real. I could never hang out with so many people from across the globe like that, otherwise, and chat about books or currents events.

Rabble.ca shares their "sim" (sort of a big island that is connected to the largerh grid of Second Life) with some like-minded neighbors who had very impressive social/political displays, photography exhibits, and other infomations to offer visitors.

Good job, Rabble.ca.

I made myself a hockey jersey to wear so I could "blend in". Apparently, I fooled 'em, because someone invited me to have a seat on a Chesterfield!

Bird's eye view of the mellow sim where Rabble.ca is.

Honestly... looks kinda creepy,

Then again I did spend like 30-40 hours a week playing age of empires for a few years.

I find that to be a totally normal and healthy desire.

Second Life isn't creepy, though. Download the free client, it costs nothing to maintain a character. It could be something to do in between conquering empires.

Stargazer

Second Life is quite cool. I just need to find time to visit it.

Great shots Robes!

Thank you, Stargazer.

500_apples, see, you already have two pals in a video game you have not even played yet. And, by the way, you might have many more because I have met quite a few people from Quebec, France, and at the location I'm standing in the picture below, I have met people from Africa. Most of the time, they all speak French, so it draws people from all over the world who want to communicate in that language. Every language has many players, French and Spanish draw big numbers.

Just wanted to tell you that.

Speaking as an avid gamer and enthusiast of new media, Second Life is cool.

However, I stand by my conviction that it is a social experiment and just isn't as much fun as other MMOs. However, its penetration of interactivity from reality is sort of neat and I am sure that it will lead to spin offs that are more graphically interesting and, in terms of the rules of gaming, fun. It is Shenmue online, minus an engaging plot.

When are they going to make Second Life a no-smoking area?

You don't want binary-coded smoke in your valuable microprocessors. It'd be no good. You could get a bug or virus.

Exactly.

Plus, there's no upside at all. Avatars don't have cravings and addictions, and don't get a "buzz" from the virtual nicotine.

Ok, that's an interesting take on it, and I won't disagree.

I would add, however, that in the absence of a scripted game plot SL participants make up their own. There is a massive quantity of role-playing going on all the time. For most causual players, it more a gigantic chat room with some very impressive bells and whistles. For many long-time players, it's a place to create objects to sell. That's pretty much what I do there, build stuff and sell it. Mostly, it's clothing and jewelry. I'm not really that social in SL outside of a small group of friends, but I love the 3-D building tools and ability to script stuff. I have do the RP stuff, though, and enjoyed it a lot.

There are approximate;y 125 Canadian user groups in the game, various interests. We should all log into SL and attend a NDP meeting, and tell them what to do.

No, wait, what am I saying---we should all log in and attend a Rabble.ca event next time one is scheduled.

Hey, Papal Bull, we might to send M.Spector to a virtual sex sim in order for him to fully appreciate the technology of Second Life.

Hey, now you're talkin'!

Farmpunk

I think SL has its merits. But eventually it will get taken over by business, hoping to catch people who feel the need to create alternatives selves online - and have a cool looking character. Gotta have that.

How many lindens (sp err... don't care) do you have Robey? Spector?

Overall, SL, to me, is a little creepy. It's even creepier when I think of Spector and Robey talking about virtual sex.

Virtual Marlboro afterwards? Who's that hurting?

Exactly! I sell virtual marihuana and crack in SL and even THAT never hurt anyone.

I make about $25.00 (USD) per month from items I sell, so, not a whole lot of $Lindens are exchanged through me, but some of the virtual sex entrepreneurs claim to be making lots more. I know a few who definitely make a tidy sum, as do others who operate role-play businesses that aren't sexual fantasy-based. Themes range from Star Trek to the really bizarre. But, there are lots of things in SL that are well within the realm of "normal".

Papal Bull

What those SL crack dealers do when the deal goes bad!

Holy crap. That's some story! Although I suppose that could happen on any web site where people interact with each other...

...uh oh.
