Information toasters - applications tailored to specific platforms and devices

Wayne's column uses the example of applications being specifically geared to the iPhone.

But this seems to be a real phenomena that I first noticed with Facebook - developing applications for a certain type of social technology platform in order to get information to people automatically, easily, and in short bursts.

So, for instance, on Facebook, there are tons of applications that do all sorts of things, from the totally useless (like the various stupid poking and funwall crap) to fun and games (like Scrabulous) to actually useful (like newsfeeds and such).

I never really thought of iPhones as mini computers where you run programs on it the way you might on a desktop or laptop - I guess I didn't really understand how it worked. I figured it was just a phone that has a few extra features like GPS and stuff. I didn't know that anyone can create applications on it and then promote them to people.

Is rabble's resident Apple representative doing outsource work for Tim Horton's now?

Heck, his paper should have sponsored the development of “Timmy Me.” Nearest coffee to where I am right now? That’s really news I can use.

Give that info to me as a branded experience I only have to press one button to get and you have my loyalty. So, if you’re a news organization, here’s my suggestion: apply yourself.

Here's an application: where has the anti-war/solidarity march got to in its meanderings through the city? When IS the next demo by the way? Now that's really news I can use.

That'd be an interesting program, you should push for its development!

Yeah, I was thinking about the privacy implications of such an app. But I suppose that as the tech train moves on, it could be possible to have security features put onto it to limit access from outside groups. Who knows, either way, it could be a neat little tool for organizational purposes.
