"Go" was good today. I even aced some of the Beatles lyrics questions that the expert contestants missed.

I also aced lots of the Beatle's questions on Go. Good fun for sure.

I really enjoyed Friday morning's SLC program, especially the last 1/2 half hour with Greg Lawrence and Tony Silvestro. It was about Lawrence running his own "leadership" campaign to be Prime Minister. It was very funny.

I have no idea why the brain trust at CBC is axing "Sounds like Canada" as hosted by Sylvestro. He really is good and reminds me of Bill Richardson and his "Sad Goat" show, which I miss so much. I guess us old-timers have become irrelevant as far as the CBC is concerned.

Sylvester (god damn how is that spelled?) annoys me. I still remember his months long on-air personal saga of trying to decide whether to go from broadcasting to writing and illustrating his fucking children's book. All on air, at the expense of, you know, Canadians. It was an insult to listeners to have that crap on air.

That being said, I like his radio voice and delivery.

I agree about the Gomeshi comments, too. I kinda like Gian. But I don't like Q. There are simply too many arts\culture shows on CBC 1. Maybe that's why SLC is going. But SLC was always more varied and current affairs than simply cultural.

DNTO sucks.

Hey, it's Sunday. That means a new episode of Wiretap. I do hope that Gregor has managed to grow his beard and that Goldy will call a pal of his on the phone and talk about toe lint.

Harper intends on privatizing the CBC. So the rebranding objective is not only, and probably not even primarily to gain more listeners. It's to gain a more saleable product. As it was, (-- As it happens? --) the classical music format was incapable of supporting the kind and degree of advertising required for a station owner to make a profit off radio. To gain profit you need frequent opportunities to cut in with ads, and so much the better if the ads are not too dissimilar to the programming. You also need to be reaching a demographic of listeners who buy things.

Same thing happening with CBC television, with the introduction of popular movies etc as well as the changes to the news.

Former CBC Montreal radio noon host Anne Lagace Dowson is running for the NDP in Westmount Ville Marie. I loved her on the radio and now I'm hoping she'll kick ass in Ottawa. Check out her website.website

If the "nerds" who run CBC radio were given the opportunity to run the country - what do you think the outcome would be? The voters of Westmount-Ville Marie think that would be a good thing - and they will elect Anne Dowson for that very reason.

Sharon

I'm fond of Jian Ghomeshi but I'm finding that his program doesn't work well in the morning. Culture -- as covered on Q -- is pretty narrow: books, new music releases, indie movie directors etc. It doesn't seem to work as a steady diet in the morning.

And I can't get a feel for the new afternoon show -- The Point -- at all except it doesn't say anything to me. I mostly ignore it even if it's on or else I put one of the digital music channels on.

It always seems to come back to that age-old question: is there any point in trying to attract all these mythical new listeners while alienating long-time listeners like me?

Farmpunk

I haven't been able to listen to the new morning and afternoon feature shows.

I was never really a fan of Q. I don't mind Gian. But the Point or whatever the hell it's called... from the promos I get the feeling I'm going to like it. And I value Sharon's opinion.

I have been listening to The House and the world at six and As It Happens fairly often. The World had some good reporting from the campaign.

Where are these rumours of privatization coming from? I suspect Ceeb tv will be in trouble before Ceeb radio.

Then again - there is Q in the morning...

The "Point" is leaving me cold. "q" with Gian was a vast improvement to "Freestyle" but it still wasn't as good as "Sad Goat". And "SLC" was really growing on me with Sylvestro as a host. He was very good and it had that reaching across Canada, feel good feeling happening.

As for "DNTO", what is with the constant shrinking of that program? Didn't it originally run for four hours? Now it's down to two hours. And what the hell is Sheila Rodger's show doing there? Don't we gave better book review programs already or has CBC axed Ian Brown and Eleanor Wachtel?

It really does seem like they are priming CBC for a private sector sale.

I am glad there are others who find him as objectionable as I do, and stunned that he is still hosting in Vancouver. From the age of being able to turn on the radio, I listened to CBC 1 every morning while getting ready to head out the door. When I moved to Vancouver, after a few months of Cluff-isms, I decided to do the unthinkable - listen to music and avoid CBC until
it was time for the next program and a different host.

My sympathies are with all the Lower Mainlanders. Really, they are.

Not a fan of the liberal media?

I didn't listen today, but yesterday on The Current I heard the announcement, right at the end of the show, that Frum would be hosting.

There seemed to be a certain symmetry to that announcement, given that Frum's mother is the legendary BROADcaster Babs Frum, and a piece on Marc Lepine's mother opened the show.

Farmpunk

Frum is hosting a Ceeb show in BC? For how long? And why hasn't this been brought to the Nerds thread earlier?

I'm going to be in deep minority terrain here, but... Frum has hosted The Current before. And, to be honest, it made for interesting radio.

Anyhow, what's everybody been listening to lately? I haven't heard The Current in a long while. A little bit of The House leading up to the Canadian election. Quite a bit of World At Six and As It Happens.

The Point?

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

Ah one of the Frum spawn will be hosting on CBC. Too bad we get the axis of evil one, the other could have let us know which are the "in" party schools this fall. Does anyone know if he will be paying Canadian or American income tax for the coin he receives for this gig?

His first guest will be that stalker con radio host. He may even get a new fan with her
Radio 1 is slowly being reprogrammed to death. If they keep moving programs around, cancelling good ones and putting crappy ones on, the general public and left supporters will tire of it and it will be the death of it. Cons love to rot and hollow out government on purpose. Make it look bad and even the left will abandon it, which suits their cause anyway. How did sean cullen get a show AGAIN. What is with afghanada(some of them are OK, but mostly propaganda). Where is madly off? the new comedies are OK but not as good. The day the cancel Vinyl Cafe and Quirks, I am done with the CBC. The house is awful with kathleen petty. Her rather provincial POV pisses me off regularly I have writtne in complaints 4 times this year with the way she handles guests. Not that the last guy who is now reporting out of china(saint something), but I miss david moskovich both on TV and radio.

You summed up my feelings pretty well. I work at home and CBC 1 has been a mainstay in the background for many, many years. These days, I turn the radio off more than I turn it on. I don't want to lose hope in the CBC because I do think there is a deliberate goal of trying to turn off hard core supporters who have saved the CBC in the past. It really is quite depressing.

Also, has anyone else noticed the increased frequency of technical glitches. Did they somehow manage to downsize their tech support in the past year?

I guess you listen to CCC with rex mouthy. Yeah I think they have a lot of tech issues not just on radio, but any live programs these days. I think this has to do with the strike a couple years ago and some paring down despite what harpy says. Again the BBC has a budget 5 times that of the CBC and I don't know if that covers it's radio and internet content.
Rex Mouthy was very rude to a guest that thought we shouldn't be in Afhganistan. What a hawkish prick he is. The guy wasn't rude or impolite, just stating that even Karzai thinks we should negotiate. RM runs over him in typical fashion that he always does to the left. "

We should get organized like the right and start writing in everytime the CBC has something like this happen. Krista Erikson is a prime example. She was a good reporter that lost her job because she provided a liberal with questions to ask in comity. I guess the fact the harper government is so secretive and you need a reporter to get an MP to ask question to get any info should be a canary in the coalmine event. Not a reason for being moved to the hinterlands.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

You're right thorin_bane. We better start fighting before we lose the CBC.

The last round of e-mails I sent never received replies, which was surprising. In the past, whether it was praise, general commentary or a complaint, I usually got a reply, even if it was only an acknowledgment of receipt.

Farmpunk

I've found some shows are better than others at responding to email. As It Happens has never replied. The Current has been good, and so has The Sunday Edition. Ontario Morning, my region's weekday morning show, not so good.

Nationally, it seems to me the Ceeb needs something like an updated Sad Goat for that afternoon slot. Maybe The Point will fill this gap... Has anyone been listening to it? The only thing I've heard from The Point are promos.

toddsschneider

I heard a CBC Radio promo for a Robbie Burns Day special, with music gay enough "to lift the dourest kilt."

Ethnophobic crrrap! Something tells me they would never air a promo for a Yom Kippur special bright enough "to lighten the kvetchiest yarmulke."

Feh.

George Victor

Nonsense

al-Qa'bong

I heard that "lift the dourest kilt" promo myself today, and said aloud, "What kind of freak would want to lift someone's kilt?"

George Victor

What does a Scot wear under his kilt is a timeless question.  What a  CBC promo crew could do with it is quite another. Just enjoy your haggis.Laughing

toddsschneider

Maybe a wee dram of the whiskey and the keening of the pipes will soften the sting of centuries of Sassenach derision.

Maybe not.

George Victor

The Sassenach are no longer able to indulge in derision, only hold a fond memory of the drink they can no longer afford.

And when the 140 Clan Chiefs bring together all their folk for The Gathering 2009, it will be the largest gathering of the clans ever, and demonstrate that the people made fun of by Dr. Samuel Johnson in his A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland CAN afford it. His observation that "the noblest prospect for a Scotchman is the High Road to London" no longer holds.

thorin_bane

Hey this is a radio nerd thread, not a scottish nerd thread. Save it for Fergus highland festival. Actually had a great time in Goderich for Piping Down The Sun. On fridays during the summer they have a 30-40 strong highland band do pipe music while the sun sets across lake huron, we happen to go on one of the prettiest sunsets I had seen in some time. My cousin thought it was almost spiritual.

toddsschneider

Now you're off-topic.  No one really needs that.  For my part, I'll keep to my side of the thread.

There was another CBC nerds thread going, but it was in culture and wasn't numbered.

More one-sided commentary about Gaza on As It Happens tonight. They decided to interview ex-UN ambassador and advisor to Sharon and Netanyahu, Dore Gold.

Of course Hamas could not be compared with the IRA because the latter never suggested that London should cease to exist. In other words, Obama's appointment (Mitchell who negotiated the truce in Northern Ireland) was bound to fail.

As for their coverage of yesterday's budget... absolutely pathetic. Once again Janice MacKinnon is called upon to be the "voice" of the left and gave the Harper budget a resounding B+.

George Victor

"You're right thorin_bane. We better start fighting before we lose the CBC."

---------------------------------------------------------------

You're both right, laine. Friends of Canadian Broadcasting says the next heads up moment will come in late February when long-term CBC funding will perhaps again be a topic.

In the meantime, consider what CBC is still able to do despite the poisonous budgeting pills they've had to swallow - and try to consider life without CBC.  I cannot. Not radio.

Or perhaps you fellas have a secret radio source of intelligent commentary?

Mike McKraken for INfometrica gave it a B- and I like this guy, but that should have been at least a c- probably more a D...Don't want to lose credability, got to be close to their peers doncha know.

CBC radio is still OK the point has been actually good lately. The repeat programming is nice in one way, but you can DL it from the programs websites, even with a dialup, though that my take a bit. I catch politics from broadband only anymore. Mulcair was awesome today. I can see him as the next leader of the NDP. But I still have a hate for Petty, every interview with layton and she screws up her facts and throws out non sequiters, Harper heck even libs, softball..softball...beachball.

But they should bring bback Northern Lights. I can catch up Morley or Bob Mac anytime on theri sights, music is all copyright BS nowdays anyway, because the artists that died 300 years ago would have wanted it that way.

No sorry other than NPR that doesn't cover canadian politics there ain't much out there. SO we on the left have to grudgingly support CBC no matter how far it sails to the right, because the alternatives are even more to the right. I love the Communist Broadcasting Corporation that the righties call it. What a Joke! Course they still listen to it and take the time to bitch and moan about their tax dollars proping it up. Cross Conservative Checkup routinely has LOTS(read more) conservatives on. So they must be listening to the channel(therefore using it) enough. At least for them the can turn to CTV or some tripe on the radio. there is nothing to the left of the CBC that gets air.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

The CBC is in its death throes.

Ad revenue is falling off with the advent of Great Depression II; mismanagement and incompetence are destroying the programming and the ratings, and the Conservative government is determined to starve the corporation to death.

Quote:
Canada's cash-strapped public broadcaster said on Thursday it would look at reducing some services in its new fiscal year, starting April 1, including "downgrading" or selling some TV or radio services.

"If we are to maintain our strategic momentum, we must protect, to the extent possible, our key assets -- our people and our programs -- but we too will be looking at reducing our services in the new fiscal year," said Hubert Lacroix, chief executive of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, in the text of a speech delivered in Toronto.

The CBC says it is facing an advertising revenue shortfall of up to C$65 million ($52 million).

Lacroix said the corporation may look at consolidating some of its local stations and that it may introduce more U.S. TV programming.

He added that the broadcaster had asked the Canadian government for help with "some financial flexibility". But Ottawa said on Wednesday it expects the CBC to clamp down on costs as other broadcasters are being forced to do.

The  economy means all broadcasters and print media are having a hard time, MS.

The CBC is at least one election away from its "death throes".

"Death throes" is a CanWest condition.

Anyone listen to or watch the Jian and Billy Bob interview on Q yesterday?  Thoughts?

Has anyone been listening to Here and Now lately?  I think Robert Fischer (sp err?) and the business reporter are doing a really good job.  I've been hearing business news that no one else is running.  Including Tony Clement saying "No one is too big to fail anymore", a pretty stunning piece of audio, and which led into McGuinty's announcement that Ontario would not be able to back GM\Chrysler pensions.

I heard it in the morning and watched it at night. It was even more of a train wreck with the visuals. Kudos to Jian for valiantly trying to make the interview work in spite of Thornton being the biggest jerk imaginable.

Wow, difficult listening. Someone hadn't had his morning coffee yet. The band mates were clearly uncomfortable. Incredible smoothness and honesty from the host. Not sure I could have pulled that off.

Sharon

I heard it live in the morning.  He sounded wasted -- drunk, stoned, then I began to think he just sounded sick, hungover maybe.

But when I watched it, I thought he looked paranoid and fearful -- actually mentally ill.

This morning, for what reason, I don't know Wink,  I've looked at coverage on CNN, TMZ, Entertainment Weekly, Perez Hilton. The American reaction in the comments sections is much as it is in Canada.
