Who actually owns the national anthem in the first place? There ought to be words exchanged over this misappropriation of "prior art".
This sort of abuse of legal devices to protect intellectual property theft is percisely the sort of asshattery that drives people into paroxysms of rage when big corporations start sob-storying about how IP theft is allegedly sending them into the poorhouse.

Gare Centrale in Montreal has the words to the national anthem, in both English and French, inscribed in STONE around the perimeter of the interior, wonder what they're gonna do there. [img]tongue.gif" border="0[/img]
Some of the comments at the link are entertaining.
I personally hate the national anthem and haven't sung it for years, for the obvious BCG (TM) reasons. [img]smile.gif" border="0[/img]

There is another thread around here about this, that I started BEFORE they actually got the rights to it. Had been hoping others would respond and also write letters about stopping it.
The whole anthem itself was determined to be not copywriteable, so VANOC opted for just 1 phrase of it and now has apparently gotten it.

Oh, it's VANOC - this is not the same as IOC. Don't worry, I don't think they're going to mandate the rewriting of the Canadian anthem - it's being appropriated for obvious reasons, because the next Olympics are going to be in Vancouver, Canada.

I was kind of wondering about the words "winter" and "2010" though, as much of the rhetoric around the use of taxpayer money to fund the Games infrastructure is that the Olympics generate so many jobs and business opportunities etc,, so I would think that, especially a local business that wants to associate itself with the Games should be allowed to, without outright ripping off of logos and trademarks. So I wonder how this will be regulated. Here's an interesting explanation from the VANOC page:

I can just see our national arrogance on display at thee 2010 Games. When we win a medal our flag will fly and our national anthem will be sung with a backdrop of words from our national anthem. And when other countries win they will get their national anthem with words from our anthem in the background. How crass.
I am pissed that we are paying these assholes big bucks to run this show and they have no imagination or original thinking. This stealing words from the anthem is right up there with there doing a blatant rip off of the mascots from the latest summer Olympics in China.
