Media Blackout: CanWest Global Attacks Drug Ad Laws

RW

If you're concerned about the future of Canadian health care, I would like to draw your attention to this article I wrote and this short (5 min) video documentary/commentary about CanWest Global's current legal attempt to strike down all of Canada's remaining restrictions against prescription drug advertising. It could devastate our health care system with rising drug costs, but our media has been covering it very little because there are billions in ad revenues at stake for them.

Here's the link to my article, written originally for Focus magazine:

And here's the link to the video:

Best to follow that link and choose to "view in high quality" if you've got a high speed connection, but here's the low quality version:

Hunting around for some background information on this, I found an informative website from Women and Health Protection, and the text of Bill C-51 - An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, Mr. Harper's attempt to open the door to direct-to-consumer advertising: "(...)15.1 (2) No person shall advertise a prescription therapeutic product to a person other than a practitioner unless they are authorized by the regulations to do so".

Thanks RW, a very useful video.
