Thomas D'Aquino, president of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, said the deal being envisaged would highlight closer integration between the two economies and look, for the most part, to eliminate non-tariff barriers, such as regulatory differences.

This sounds all too familiar... a European NAFTA.

That being said, it's kind of comforting that it involves diversifying outside the US.

I know we should be scared of getting sued over "regulatory differences". But some part of me wonders how this would fare in terms of environmental policy. Certainly the EU would not allow itself to be sued out of some of their more stringent eco-standards by Canadian companies, would it? Could a trade agreement ever result in the country with more stringent standards suing the worse one for its unfair advantage?

Just my babbles.

I don't see our government agreeing to anything like the Bolivarian Alternative and so far as I know all other international trade agreements are designed to merge standards in a downwards direction, be it environmental, labour... whatever standards can be lowered will be. Let's just say I am skeptical

Paul Wells seems to think that not much is going to come from this now and that it was the election that stalled it. He links to an article in Le Devoir but my French isn't strong enough to really get the gist of it.
