Ontario NDP leadership race? You wouldn't know it from provincial office

aka Mycroft

The first "official" NDP leadership occurred today in Toronto but you'd never know it looking at the party website which has virtually no information on the contest. The leadership race update page has an announcement from the summer informing prospective candidates that they can call provincial office for a registration form but there's no information on who has registered as a candidate and no information about campaign events such as the nine official leadership debates, their dates and locations. There's also no information encouraging people to join the party in order to vote, no information on cut off dates, not even any information on how the leadership election is going to work.

We have just seen an American election demonstrate the importance of the internet in spreading information and building capacity but these lessons appear to have been lost on the ONDP.

If the NDP were on the ball we would have seen live streaming of today's leadership debate on the site and the event uploaded onto YouTube in the coming days but there's not even any announcement that the debate was scheduled.

It's sad when Wikipedia has more details about the leadership election process than the party's own website.

Today's CTV report says the debates will be in Sudbury, Kingston, London, Ottawa, Timmins, Hamilton and Thunder Bay. I would assume this could not be posted on the party's website until the schedule was approved by provincial council today.

I hope the ONDP has learnt one thing from yesterday's debate - get a bigger room. I stood for the entire 2 hours at the back in a room that could have qualified as a sauna.

Also, we were told not to put in any more questions as the moderator had plenty and then towards the end she said, `well I guess we`ll stop now as I have run out of questions`!

(I also had the misfortune to stand near Peter Kormos who made derogatory comments about the candidates all through the debate,Perhaps he was grumpy about having to stand also, or perhaps that`s just him?)

On the up side I think I lost 7 pounds and all that sweating must have been good for my skin. I too had to stand, and was heading to find the form for a question when the announcement was made.

Yes, it's definitely "sad". But, from the state of the party's website to the size of the meeting room, everything about the state of the party today comes down to its current financial position.

FYI, there is a brand new website under development and an issue of The Leading Edge (the party magazine for members) which will rectify the dirth of information on the leadership race. In the mean time, it's up to the candidates to cut through this and find a way to reach out to party members and the general public.

I wasn't able to make it to the leader's debate on Saturday but it sounds like it was similar to the one I went to the week before. I'd be interested in seeing if Horwath's performance improved - she seemed a but unfocussed two weeks ago but nothing that can't be overcome with practice and preparation.

Did anyone appear to be videotaping the debate for uploading on YouTube? With an OMOV process it should be a no brainer that either live webcasting of these events or at least  makikng them available on YouTube is a necessary prerequisite for engaging party members (and potential party members) as only a small percentage of members are going to be able to make it to a live event (fewer still if they aren't even being properly promoted ahead of time)

All four candidates have websites up and runniag. They are all short on policy ideas tough Tabuns makes an effort with two pieces up, one on the energy economy and one on party reform. You'd never know that Prue is talking about school funding looking at his site - no policy prescriptions whatsover - same with Bisson and Horwath. Horwath's site is the most multimedia of the four and she has more material up on YouTube than the others (ok, than Tabuns who is the only other candidate with a YouTube presence).

Did anyone in the NDP follow the Obama campaign?

If I were on one of the candidate's teams, I would make sure the video the all candidates debates and put them up on my site in order to maximize traffic.

It's better to have a room that's too small than one that's too big. Too big looks horrible on TV.

Easy for you to say, you weren't standing in a sauna for 2 hours. It's not like they didn't have a rough idea of numbers given that they would have known the number of delegates at least.
