"TORONTO — Cost pressures and plunging share prices prompted Canadian
publisher and broadcaster CanWest Global Communications Corp. (TSX:CGS)
to cut 560 jobs - about five per cent of its workforce - Wednesday as
the company faces a rougher economy and more competition.

"The company, which employs about 10,500 people in Canada, said the cuts would save $61 million a year.

" 'We
are implementing a number of initiatives that will provide savings that
will allow us to better compete in the current economic environment,
without compromising our core products and services,' CEO Leonard Asper
said in a statement ... "

Let's hope they start selling their newspapers (and sell them to different buyers). It would be nice to have more than one voice in print in most of English Canada.

So how much longer will it be before the National (money loser for ten years in a row) Post is put out of our misery?

The  Global news report here in BC at 5pm stated that most of the job were going to be from their Victoria and Kelowna Channel E TV stations, and their online facilities. And boy is that maddening, as the the Victoria TV station they bought out in order to extend their propaganda network, was excellent, and covered mainly VIsland issues.

Remind, the business strategy reminds me of Walmart. Come in, take over the market, once the competer is eliminated, cut back services and use the national resources to replace the local resources.

The "business strategy" in this case is "survival". Let's hope the Asper family fails again.

I don't think the National Post has ever turned a nickle.  And they launched a missive against Harper last week about running a deficit.

 Har har har har.

It's time to relegate the National Post and all who sail in her as just a vanity press.

Well you got to hand it to those neocons ..they know what controls the people. The left surely has someone with money that can purchase these stations for cheap.

The ndp or left leaning rich fellow can collect these statuions and some newspapers when they pop up for sale during this global meltdown . It can't all be left to the neocon to  byuild the propaganda machine.

Just think ..after a few years they may even have there own network and it's not like they would have to be biased in there reporting to gain national support.

It quite frankly sickened many peole when local newspapers were up for sale and the only people that were intrested were the global neocons...then the ndp wonder why they can only garnish 17% of a vote.

For pete's sake ndp..if you can't scoop up stations or a newspaper then maybe rent a sat transponder from telesat canada. Now is the time to purchase as neocons go belly up. Wink

I poured through "The Winnipeg Citizen" newspaper on microfilm.

A labour co-op paper, but it folded after a year.  The CP wire refused to deal with them. And as this was the red scare, they red baited just like McCarthy.  Little difference among the dailies. So that is what history teaches us about how to lose money.  It's just that the National Post had deeper pockets. But its time is up as well.

The internet is where it's at I think.

That is a good example of how a left media desire by the public is not being served. The right wingnuts have a monopoly on media that must be broken and taken to the crtc for overhaul.

Also a good reason for a licence. The ndp or a rich lefty doesn't need a network nowadays...just a single tv station with an uplink to a transponder is all that is necessary. As you pointed out the internet is the future in broadcasting ,however the right wing controllers are even trying there damnest to control that too. Control the message and you control what people have to work with.

The internet can be used to move  info to the tv station  from all parts of Canada and the world and then be uplinked and viewed by the consumer.I guess they can wait for a good deal to pop up from a belly up station with an uplink system in place, but if the ndp or any other left party want to make ground this will be the way to do it.

The internet only is friendly to a small percentage of people anyways. My shockwave 9 only works on some sites and we all know how frustrating computer systems can be with updates and new operatiing systems that make it even more frustrating for the normal joe to deal with.

TV however is a strong ,technologically stable visual media that imprints on the brain extremely well...once they got your attention they can do whatever...consider the framing of dion as a good example of how that works. The image you have in your mind is that of a buffonwhimp. See!

Can you imagine ficking the channel and watching rabble videos...can you imagine millions and millions of Canadians watching rabble videos..can you imagine the tv shows that can be created...that if not educating the public, can expose all the tricks and cons that happen under their nose.

Can you imagine a news service that actually reports the news without spinning it to the right all the time, and editing the stuff out that is the real news. It's gonna happen because one thing is for certain the internet has shown there is a need for it..and if there is a need for it , it will be filled, money can be made. The question is WHO is going to be the one to make it.

I wonder if it can even be run like pbs(viewer donations)? or god forbid , federal money. With the CBC now being run by neocons and taken over, and global in the hands of a single obvious right winger and the CTV so in conflict of interest there emplyoees run for the conservative party, not to mention the biased reporting..there is no question a left media is just waiting to be born.

This a great opportunity with the neocons going belly up from all the greed they fester in and chewing each other up in the process , for some bargain purchases. So yeh I think it's a great thing that global is going belly up and turning into a penny stock..I wonder if the ctv monopoly will be next. Maybe the employees will find a home in a new tv station.Cool

Our benevolent newspaper publisher or TV tycoon of the left would have to appeal to the local chamber of commerce and its advertising members or have very, very deep pockets indeed.

Between the loss of subscribers and advertisers, we will be lucky to have any newspapers ( and TV stations with substantive content) within a decade. The Globe and Mail is the exception, of course, only because of its extraordinary quality and appeal to deep-pocket readers.

This is all unfortunate because the IT world does not make for community discussion (in the sense of municipalities) and further isolates the body politic into its niche segments.

France used to provide state support for publications to maintain a healthy and balanced political environment.

Anyone know if this is still the case over there?

True enough.  I hold the view that the business community will sell you the rope you hang them with.  So given you have deep pockets to break into the market as a left wing media the people embrace warmly, then businesses will sooner or later (being the greedy #$*%$ they are) break ranks and buy ad time/space.  Just hope the cash doesn't run out before then.
