Coalition dead? CTV: NDP and Bloc plotted for weeks

CTV (Conservative TV) is airing a story that leaks excerpts from yesterday's NDP caucus conference call in which Layton speaks of having had a deal in place with the BQ for several weeks. It seems that a Tory dialled in to the conference call and recorded the conversation.

CTV is spinning this as something that will cause the Liberals to drop the deal and former Liberal president Stephen LeDrew (who hasn't actually had any influence in the Liberal Party for years) appeared on CTV Newsnet as a Liberal "advisor" and argued that there will be no coalition now.

NDP, Bloc in coalition talks before fiscal update

LeDrew-Levant interview on CTV

Comunications Director Brad Lavigne was just on CTV demolishing that argument. All Opposition parties talk amongst themselves, nothing secret at all. Lavigne suggested the Cons are in freefall and grasping at straws to prevent being defeated December 8.  Shame on the Cons for listening on phone calls uninvited!

Whenever you see the words Stephen Ledrew, ignore the article - and I LIKE the bow-ties.

What's with the proliferation of threads.

This is already being discussed in detail in other threads.

CTV's Robert Fife - I ignore anything out of his mouth as well.

Plotted? How about "prudently explored"? How about leaving off the cuff to reactions to the reactionaries? Me, I like planning (in politics and economies).

The Cons are getting desperate - the CTV news anchor just suggested the Cons may prorogue Parliament this week until the Budget is handed down January 27th/

Lol. That is about the worst thing they could do- smacks of Reichstag fire and all. If the anchor really said that, then I hope the opposition plays this up big time to show exactly how far the Conservatives are willing to go in their desperation to retain power (and consequently subvert democracy).

If the Cons were to prorogue Parliament, all the money in the world couldn't buy themselves out of this crisis. I wonder if their polling just came in and showed they have no support from the Canadian public.

Just watched Mulcair.   I think he did a fine job.

Be interesting to see where the criminal aspect of this ends up.

Ok, I have been having far too much fun with the coalition vs conservative battle raging. I started a poll on another forum back on November 27th. It has 51 votes so far, and goes back another forth between the coalition and the conservatives. I started it as a joke, because in another thread, I realized that the coalition talks were taking shape and the Irony of Duceppe fronting a Coalition and sitting as Prime Minister put me into comedic fits of laughter. No it wouldn't happen, but the theory that it could, was a bit much. So the 2nd part of the question is Who should be Prime Minister of the Coalition.

Currently, Harper is still more popular as a Conservative Leader then any one Dominant Leadership challenge. Ignatieff is the most popular so far, with Dion in 2nd.

Don't know forum rules, but if anyone is interested in having fun, voting in my mock/joke poll, I would post the link.

So, shortly after the announcement on CTV, I would have thought that the poll numbers would have increased for the Conservatives. Nope, the CPC momentum has slowed and the Coalition picked up.

Who knows.....

Now, please tell me what "Criminal" aspect are you speaking of?? Is this Nixon Stuff?

aka Mycroft

Hm - so did Harper authorize a Conservative "member" to tape the NDP caucus meeting? Is Harper the new Nixon?

Maybe. Or perhaps they are just hoping the coalition talks collapse between now and when the House comes back.

Here is the whole transcript on Canoe. There isn't much to write home about.

NDP CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Now, will there be an independent NDP caucus, yes. BQ stability issues, worry about BQ potentially being off-side, we're taking that very much into account. We have numerous strategies designed to deal with it, I actually believe they're the least of our problems, but in case I'm wrong, let's just say we have strategies, this whole thing would not have happened if the moves hadn't have been made with the Bloc to lock them in early, because you couldn't put three people together in one, in three hours. The first part was done a long time ago, I won't go into details, and the managing expectations, lists from groups, actually, the wisest people in the groups are already coming to the conclusion, some of them are in direct contact, saying probably wouldn't be too helpful if we had long lists of stuff, right? What we really want is just to get Harper out and get the new group in because it's going to be a hell of a lot better for everything we believe in, correct? Correct. So let's stay on that track, and not start debating whether or not it's twenty five percent change or fifteen percent change over here, let's get them out, on the basis of unity not the basis of division.

There is the beef. It is a pretty slim patty if you ask me. Possible more damage then its worth for the CPC. A Grewal Moment ????

Bob Fife has really embarrassed himself.  It will be interesting to see if CTV takes some action to undo this very poor reporting.

I am voting for cold-gate by the way.

Frankly what I want to see are some damn polls. COME ON!

Bookish Agrarian

For what it is worth I have written an email of complaint to CTV in regards to the way they chose to cover this not very interesting conversation.  To me the big story is the recording and then distribution of a transcript of that recording by the freaking Prime Ministers Office.

Is the NDP talking to the wrong people? Apparently Dion is the weaklink, and is proving it again.

With the Funding off the table, the CPC in a defensive battle, it seems Mr. Ignatieff isn't a fan of the coalition. Once the money was back in their pocket Mr. Ignatieff who has been pleasantly and purposefully absent, is now speaking. Seems the people who put the CPC on the run, aren't worthy of supporting. Liberal arrogance rises to the top.

But perhaps the real problem is that the coalition negotiators are working with a DUD not a STUD?

DION IS FRANKENSTEINS MONSTER

Quote:
The source in the Ignatieff camp said Mr. Dion is making all the running on coalition talks with the NDP and the Bloc Québécois, and is not consulting with leadership candidates, Mr. Ignatieff, Bob Rae or Dominic LeBlanc.

“Dion is like Frankenstein’s monster - he’s on the slab and just had a jolt of life injected into him. He’s going full tilt ahead with this coalition but his caucus isn’t going with him,” the source said.

Mr. Ignatieff’s supporters are aware that a coalition would be shaky, and probably short-lived. The Conservatives opened their war-room yesterday, just in case the country is plunged into an election next week, and are already preparing to hammer the Liberals for striking a deal with the sovereigntist Bloc.

(Text of letter to Harper deleted)

It has suddenly occurred to me that with the wonders of Google, a direct link could be drawn (through the text of the letter I sent) between my on-line identity and my real name and address. Obviously, this is unlikely, but I still think it best not to have that possibility out there. If anyone would like me to PM them the letter, I would be happy to do so.

Bookish Agrarian

Any Liberal who is seen to be scuttling this possibility will be a historic footnote.  The danger for the Liberals in walking out is much, much higher than for either the NDP or the Bloc.

The LPC probably view themselves as out of danger, as long as they get their $1.95. That is what survival meant to them. Perhaps the LPC doubters were correct. However, every hour, things change. The LPC, to turn down power is a rather strange concept to me. My view is that Ignatieff doesn't want DION anymore then anyone else, and like everyone else is terrified of Frankensteins monster making policy.

This whole thing is getting over-heated. Canadians are going to get a bad case of scandal fatigue. The main point is, Harper and his Conservatives have lost the confidence of the Canadian parliament and, as the polls will soon reveal, the Canadian people. They are also behaving in a manner completely unbecoming of government: spying, spinning, trying to over-run the media, and generally maintaining the same level of fierce partisanship that got Canada into this crisis in the first place.

Btw, besides Bob Fife at CTV, the media is not giving the Conservatives a hell of credit either. Here's the latest article from the Canadian Press.

i'm encouraged having read the transcript of the caucus conversation.  there's nothing in there that should scare any caring person.  Aboriginal concerns are named, helping people who are suffering in the economy, and a focus on a longer term coalition so that we don't in fact have to go through another election and possible Con majority in the shorter term.

Liberals who oppose the coalition, Ignatieff or whomever is getting cold feet, should sink if they back off from this.

The National Post has an obvious political slant that makes me wary of any story of that nature, and they simply list "a source".  Ignatieff has been very firm in public on his support for bringing down the Conservatives.

EDIT: Original wording didn't make sense.

Isn't it illegal to secretly tape a conversation that you're not participating in, without a warrant?

You are absolutely correct on both accounts. Such an action would scuttle any future strategic voter intiatives, marginalize the vote of Canadian left women, especially if an election is called and Harper gets a majority, and it would render them defunct because of their sheer arrogance alone. Moreover, if they refuse to bring the government down, and the pay equity rights for women is dissolved, and a renamed Bill C484 arises, Canadian women will be furious. And if the economy continues to meltdown badly because of Harper, they will wear it too!

Personally, I think we are seeing their arrogance, and indeed an attempt to subjagate the NDP, as perhaps, like some here have tried to sell, they believe that the NDP need this more than they do and will cave to the Liberals allegedly having more democratic rights to set policies. It seems neither of the 2 ruling parties get it, it is NOT about them, it is about CANADIANS. Moreover, in an accord that is 3 way, the Bloc and the NDP outnumber the popular vote of the Liberals.
