I grew up reading Pogo along with Lil Abner, Little Orphan Annie, Peanuts, and a dozen other classic cartoon strips. Al Capp's "Kickapoo Joy Juice" for some reason has remained in memory. I wish I could kick those mindless twits Archie and Jughead out of my memory.

In the simple yet sophisticated spirit of Walt Kelly (and keeping in mind yer now on Google) let's hear light new lyrics to this old melody ...or from Good King Wenceslas...which, as I recall, went:

Walt Kelly first used the quote "We Have Met The Enemy and He Is Us" on a poster for Earth Day in 1970. In 1971, he did a two panel version with Pogo and Porky in a trash filled swamp... Pogo responding to Porky with "YEP, SON, WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US." In 1972, it was the title of a book, Pogo: We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us.
The complete collection of Pogo comic strips are now found at the tourist entry point to the Okefenokee Swamp. Three volumes about Walt Kelly's swamp critters - some of whom had recognizable human counterparts. Kids could ask their parents about the political figures being satirized. Or not. It depended on the politics of the family.

I play the Lambert, Hendricks and Ross version of this tune on my radio show every year about this time. I usually manage to throw in some Jerry Colonna Christmas songs as well.

Early on, for me, there was Santa Claus and Christmas trees, and then there was nothing, and then there was nothing, and then there was Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby." It's still sorta the best in the Santa line.
