A Pogo Possum Christmas Carol Contest

In the spirit of Christmas, 2008:

Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., and Kalamazoo!
Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower alley-garoo!

And even these timeless lyrics could probably be improved upon....

I grew up reading Pogo along with Lil Abner, Little Orphan Annie, Peanuts, and a dozen other classic cartoon strips. Al Capp's  "Kickapoo Joy Juice" for some reason has remained in memory. I wish I could kick those mindless twits Archie and Jughead out of my memory.

Unionist

Quote:
Once in royal David's city
Stood some big Israeli tanks;
Mothers giving birth to babies
Met with checkpoints and roadbanks.
Holy land was all defiled
As a bullet killed a child.

Jesus, were he born this Christmas,
Would not even have a shed;
For it would have been demolished
For a settler road instead;
Now the poor and meek and lowly
Homeless are in land called holy.

The second stanza from Walt Kelly's   COMICAL  cartoon classic goes:

Don’t we know archaic barrel,
Lullaby Lily boy, Louisville Lou?
Trolley Molly don’t love Harold,
Boola boola Pensacoola hullabaloo!

In the simple yet sophisticated spirit of Walt Kelly (and keeping in mind yer now on Google) let's hear light new lyrics to this old melody ...or  from Good King Wenceslas...which, as I recall, went:

"Good King Saurkraut, look out, on your feets uneven..."

memory fails...but the possible  combinations and permutations are endless...

Michelle

We three kings of Orient are

Trying to smoke a rubber cigar

It was loaded, it exploded,

Now we're on yonder star.

or

We three kings are really square

Trying to sell cheap underwear

Real fantastic, no elastic!

Won't you buy a pair?

Not as good as Unionist's "Once in Royal David's City," but hey.  It's a classic. :)

And it was Churchy LaFemme who gave us:

Churchy LaFemme (singing):
Good King Sauerkraut looked out
On his feets uneven,
Whilst the snoo lay roun' an' 'bout,
All kerchoo achievin'.

Pogo:
What's snoo?

Churchy:
I dunno. What's new with you?

Walt Kelly first used the quote "We Have Met The Enemy and He Is Us" on a poster for Earth Day in 1970. In 1971, he did a two panel version with Pogo and Porky in a trash filled swamp... Pogo responding to Porky with "YEP, SON, WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US." In 1972, it was the title of a book, Pogo: We Have Met the Enemy and He Is Us.

The complete collection of Pogo  comic strips are now found at the tourist entry point to the  Okefenokee Swamp. Three volumes about Walt Kelly's swamp critters - some of whom had recognizable human counterparts. Kids could ask their parents about the political figures being satirized. Or not. It depended on the politics of the family.

I play the Lambert, Hendricks and Ross version of this tune on my radio show every year about this time.  I usually manage to throw in some Jerry Colonna Christmas songs as well.

Early on, for me,  there was Santa Claus and Christmas trees, and then there was nothing, and then there was nothing, and then there was  Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby."  It's still sorta the best in the Santa line.
