The "Clock of the Long Now", as opposed to the "New York here and now", is intended to hold predictors of near and future techno and scientific advancements more accountable to people living in the future, or some such.
Sci-fi writer Vernor Vinge explains briefly what technological singularity is. And he provides a few scenarios for if and when the singularity does NOT happen over the long now. It could be a mad, mad world either way, if it doesnt happen some time between 2030 and 2040.
