Aw shucks.

I just found this by accident while looking for something else.  It fits the thread trend:

Please tell me how that commercial is 'worse' than this one.

Although now that Janet Jackson didn't show her nipples at halftime, perhaps the Superbowl needs to watch it's step. I wonder if they will also cancel their cheerleaders?

The implication that the women in the commercial are fucking their vegetables is probably what is thought to be worse than Paris  getting all wet over her car.

" The ad, which carries the tagline, "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Bet ter Sex," shows lingerie-clad stunners getting "intimate" with vegetables."

Well, good for NBC.  No one wants to see Sean Hanity or David Frum intimate with lingerie clad stunners.

The thought alone has already put me off my dinner.

Apparently PETA isn't limiting themselves to being sexist, but racist as well!

Here, they're comparing breeding and buying pure bred dogs to the KKK wanting a master race.

Whether they are being racist or appealing to our hatred of racism to make people aware of animal rights vs. animal breeders' privileges is being contended on that forum.

Actually, a lot of the ideas behind kennel clubs and pure bred dog breeding did come from 19th century and early 20th century eugenic thought. I'll go dig through my pile of recently read stuff and see if I can dredge up a link.

We should open a thread on just that topic, and I'll try to get around to it lately. It's an interesting one. My family has had a number of purebred dogs in recent years, which has spurred many discussions about the breeding of purebreds.

I think it was the Fifth Estate that did a piece on this awhile back, looking at some of the severe health problems certain dog breeds face because of breeding techniques.

Regardless, PETA members dressing up in KKK cloaks is not cool in my books!

PETA loses it again ... and again ... and again ... and again! should be the title of this thread.

NBC has pulled the plug on a PETA commercial planned to air at the Superbowl.

I dunno, to me it looked as if the TV network lost it in this case.

We nae canna have football fans thinking about sex and broccoli when the NFL meatwagon is supposed to be on display, now could we?

I agree with PETA's methods here.  The issue is very much the same.

I can't stand these Kennel Club snobs and their archaic rules.

The thing with purebred dogs, and I don't want to support what SOME kennel clubs do to alter/improve their breeds, is that some people need to choose the temperments of their dog, based on their needs, which is something that you can't always get when you get a puppy from the SPCA.

My suggestion would always be to adopt an older dog, because you can get a better idea about temperment. But, I do understand that some people require a breed that needs less exercize, or more, or one that is most compatable with children, or other animals, etc. etc., each of which can vary from breed to breed.

Dog breeding is remarkably flawed, and so many of the things that go on, both in kennel clubs and puppy mills, are awful. But, since my family are members of the AKC, I resent seeing the AKC compared to the KKK.

Re: killing your chickens, I've had some clients who had that job -- it's brutal but they did learn how to do it efficiently. Even better if the animal you're taking is out of sight of the other ones.

I remember I went to go see a documentary a couple years ago about a guy who went back to the land, started a farm and raised a few head of cattle, all grass-fed. When the time came to do the deed he had a special place all set up, very bucolic but he couldn't go through with it. Ended up bringing it to a small slaughterhouse where he knew they would do it humanely.

Nothing compared to one of my clients who could not longer do her repetitive meat-packing job in a big hog processing plant so they put her in "modified work" on the kill floor. Her job was to stab the pigs in the eye as they went by hanging from one leg on the turnstile, to see if they were still alive after getting gassed and their throats slit. For those pigs that were still alive -- and there were quite a few -- she then had to shoot them with a bolt gun. (I guess they didn't want to waste all those extra bolts, by shooting them first.)

My dad was a butcher. He had no qualms about us coming to visit him at work or on the farm on weekends, but I never saw him treat any animal like that.

Blog womanist-musings on PETA's KKK ad.

The amount of insensitivity it takes to dress up like the KKK and attempt to draw a link between the breeding of animals to the terror that blacks have lived with for generations can only be described as the audacity of whiteness. It mattered not to these ignorant over privileged fools, that seeing people dressed like this in a public place could be terribly triggering to POC.

This is not going to be the kind of post where I try to make a larger connection to social injustices faced by people of colour. The mock KKK uniform that they are wearing stands for itself. Human Beings are also animals and continually performing wilder and wilder stunts in which the most vulnerable members of society are targeted could hardly be called ethical.

The KKK is a terrorist organization. It has murdered, stalked, raped, abused and committed so many violations against humanity that I could not possibly list them. This is what PETA wants to be associated with. In some ways they are not far off the mark because they are an organization that is built on nothing other than hatred. Their actions reveal a hatred of POC, women, and transgender people.

PETA has been called out time and time again on their behaviour but they are so blinded by their various privileges that they cannot or will not see the damage that their actions cause.

Were these clients named Eichmann, perchance?

No, and either was my dad. Although he did lose an uncle in a camp.

PETA Watch Australia

A new site has been set up that looks at the economic and social damage being caused by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). It also examines its aims, philosophies, strategies and campaigns. There are a couple of postings there about the ridiculous 'sea kitten' campaign. The site is: http://petawatchaustralia.blogspot.com/

Thanks for sharing this, Triciamarie. As I've said somewhere else before, pork products should have labels on them similar to the warning labels you see on tobacco products. With pictures of hogs being raised in tiny cages or hanging half-alive by one limb and being needled in the eye. This should be criminal. Why it isn't attests to how far we've gone astray.

But why don't we see more images of the reality? I would think PETA has the resources to launch very effective and graphic campaigns on issues that could be affected much more immediately by public pressure - like factory flesh production. Maybe they don't, but if they do, they should be putting their energies into problems that can be changed more immediately. But I guess, to them, merely improving the raising and kill conditions does nothing to address the consumption of meat.

Why is it not possible for PETA to defend animals without demeaning women?

The stupid thing about that campaign is that vegans can be fat, too.  You don't necessarily lose weight by adopting a vegan diet.

I initially lost a bit of weight when I went vegan - until I discovered vegan junk food... :D

This latest rash of ads might be PETA's worst ever.

Quote:
Peta is an organisation dedicated to the ethical treatment of animals. I am careful to point this out, because it's easy to mistake them for an organisation dedicated to the promotion of sex with vegetables or the propagation of self-loathing, misogyny and Pamela Anderson.

Honestly, Peta's ads make me so angry I could stamp on a kitten. While eating a Big Mac and wearing chinchilla. If this has offended you, then I should make clear that my tongue is very firmly in my cheek. Which, funnily enough, was precisely the excuse Peta's associate director of campaigns and outreach proffered when confronted with the criticism that the organisation's latest ad, Boyfriend went vegan, all but condones physical violence within a relationship. After all, if sex sells, hard sex sells harder, and the sort of sex that leaves you hospitalised sells hardest of all.

Federal security services have identified Greenpeace and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as the kind of “multi-issue extremist” groups that pose a threat to Canadians, documents obtained under Access to Information show.

In a series of documents from 2005 to 2009, the RCMP and CSIS assess “threats from terrorism and extremism” and report growing concerns about environmental and animal-rights groups, as well as militants from first nations.
