NDP leadership race falls flat on Focus Ontario

I had no idea that Leadership Candidates Micheal Prue and Gilles Bisson were on Focus  Ontario Last week.

This week I happened to catch FOCUS ONTARIO on Global after the newscast, and caught two Leadership Candidates, Andrea Horwath and Peter Tabuns.

What is telling, is that after Last Weeks Broadcast of Prue and Bisson, NOBODY, NO ONE, NOTHING, Zilch, NADA, ZIPPO, big ZERO, the DONUT, commented on the two leaders or what they had to say.

This is troubling on 2 fronts. ONE it means the General Public, didn't have anything to comment upon regarding the statements of the two leadership contenders. Nor did either camp have anyone comment on their leaders or positions or state of the NDP.

Focus Ontario host, said it is the FIRST time in their history that they received NO FEEDBACK from the viewers on a segment.

I have no idea if People watch last nights FOCUS ONTARIO, but I would suggest that both leadership candidates found their stride near the end, after they ditched their memorised pieces. Once they have to answer the tougher questions, and aren't prepared, they actually look better, because they both showed they had some idea of what they were talking about. I find this refreshing compared to the repetitive BS that MPPs repeat, repeat, repeat, without ever answering a question.

Regardless, last week and possibly this week, could well demonstrate that the NDP are not connecting with the public when given regional exposure on television.  And certainly, camps should have connected with their supporters to watch and comment on their leadership hopefulls.

Ironically, a woman commented on the economic disaster that is befalling Ontarians. It would be clear to me that the ONDP is on the right track with their policy, but the women who commented, clearly is not getting the message of the NDP, because if she had, she would know that at least ONE Political party agrees with what she said.

How is it that people who are asking governments to listen to them, are ignoring or not hearing the NDP, especially when the NDP is on the same page as these concerned individuals.

The individual who called is the type that should be helping and supporting the NDP so that the NDP can address those needs.

Ontarians, many Ontarians, think and behave much like the values of the ONDP, but either do not hear the NDP, Do not believe the NDP, Do Not trust the NDP, or like the NDP but will not mark there X with them.

FOCUS ONTARIO, has a viewership that is engaged in Politics. IF the people that watch this show, failed to be inspired to write in after an ONDP Leadership broadcast, how much further away from the mindset is the NDP from those who pay no attention, could use the help of the NDP, but couldn't tell the difference between the NDP and any other party.

If there are any Andrea, or Tabuns supporters, I hope you watched Focus Ontario.

The Host was sending a message to the party.

"People are not engaged" Which is the worst thing for any party.

NorthReport

Not at all surprising. The NDP is dead in the water in Ontario. Many people have been trying to say so, by suggesting some bold new policies are required to bring the NDP back from its near-death situation, but not many are listening.

The party has neither the policies nor the personalities to capture the interest of the Ontario voters.

Bob Rae's betrayal (breaking promises, attacking labour, chickening out on LGBT rights) buried them for 14 years. But they haven't taken stock of those lessons yet.

Truly, I don't know anyone--apart from the last, aging loyalists--who consider the Ontario NDP relevant. The NDP MPPs who are in the legislature are there because of their personal relationships with their ridings. Nobody votes NDP, they vote for DiNova, Prue, or Kormos. When any of them retire, their ridings will open for the Liberals or Conservatives.

Are you quite sure of that?

Doubtful.

That's totally false. The large minority of relentless old line party supporters in Ontario have basically rubber-stamped more than 50 of Pinocchio's broken campaign promises since 2003. Not everything that grows in Ontariariario are necessarily good things

northreport & m.spector - what kind of bold new policies do you have in mind?

Barts

Of course not. And my indecision is final.

How true.  After all, when Shelley Martel retired in Nickel Belt, the seat just went to another party.  Foot in mouth  My mistake...

I think the predictions of doom are a little premature.

1) While the NDP Leadership isn't generating huge attention, Focus Ontario generates even less. Even the program website is months out of date. I don't think the lack of feedback means much of anything.

2) Last I checked the NDP was at 19 per cent in the polls. That's a long way from government but it's a long way from washed out.

Which isn't to say the party, and activists, don't have a lot of work to do - they do - and it isn't to say some bold thinking isn't required - it is - but the doom and gloom is a little over the top.

Focus Ontario, still has an audience. That Audience was Silent, following the coverage of ONDP leadership candidates. Any kind of response, is better then NO response. If you are Focus Ontario, and that  program is on the downslide, would you dare schedule NDP members in the future if they can't pull ratings or engage the public.  Are the viewers tuning in then saying, OH, its the NDP, I will go do the dishes instead?

You have a poll that shows the ONDP at 19%?  If so, you are correct, it is a long way from washout.

 From the opening post:

And equally ironically, not a damn one of the critics has suggested an economic path out of the dilemma that is not a throwback to the past - not in this thread or any other. Smile

Most recent environics had the ONDP at 19 per cent.

ETA:

Latest Ipsos: NDP at 16

Latest Nanos: NDP at 17

Wow look at those numbers for the ONDP of the 40 to 49 age group.

7%..... See the nanos poll.

Other then that bottom end. It appears the Liberals attract more women, and the Conservatives attract more men, and the NDP attract both pretty equally.
