Darwin is "Satan's biggest trick on humanity"

Quote:

As scientists around the world celebrate the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's seminal work on evolution, Adnan Oktar, a college dropout turned theorist of Islamic creationism, is working on the fifth volume of a 14-part masterwork that he says will bury Darwinism once and for all.

"Darwin and his theory are dead," says Mr. Oktar, founder and honorary president of the Science Research Foundation, an Istanbul outfit dedicated to debunking the Victorian-era English naturalist. Darwin, says his 52-year-old Turkish scourge, is "Satan's biggest trick on humanity."

Mr. Oktar, who briefly studied interior design, hasn't had much success swaying scientists with the weight of his research. "He is a complete and utter ignoramus," says Richard Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist and Oxford University professor.

Now, from a secularist's point of view, it's bad enough that we have nutjob Muslims and Christians taking anti-science views of the development of life.  What I thought was particularly noteworthy about Mr. Oktar is the fact that there is so much active censorship of those who disagree with him (banning of websites and so forth).  If counterviews cannot be fully expressed, proponents of science and rational thought have a significantly more difficult task.

It just underscores the vital importance of the right of free speech.

Thank you, Wall Street Journal, for bringing this scoundrel to our attention! I didn't realize that a fame-addicted hack from Turkey represents the world's biggest threat to science.

Who said anything about Oktar being "the world's biggest threat to science"?  What is striking is that in a relatively secular country like Turkey, Oktar seems to have significant influence...influence that is magnified with the use of active censorship of opposing views.

Do a Google search of "Adnan Oktar" Darwin and you get about 150,000 hits.  It's not like the WSJ is giving publicity to a highly obscure Islamic creationist.

For example, if you don't like the WSJ as a source (perhaps because the WSJ is inherently evil), how about ?

Here's a piece from today's "front page" (online) of  on the same/similar subject.

At the story notes, "millions of copies" of Mr. Oktar's book have been published.  So, this does not appear to merely be a case of the WSJ stirring up trouble where none exists.  It's just good reporting.

On the specific issue of censorship of Darwinist thought (from interview of Mr. Oktar on [url=http://counterknowledge.com/2008/11/darwinism-is-the-life-blood-of-terro...):

CounterKnowledge: "There was widespread outrage at the censorship of Richard Dawkins’ website in Turkey, which occurred at your behest. Why did you do that?"

Mr. Oktar: "The reason why the court decided to ban access to the site was the defamatory comments contained in it. No-one has the right to insult anyone else, no matter where in the world they may be. Such behavior attracts legal penalties. Freedom of thought is not freedom to defame. Everyone has a responsibility to express his or her ideas within a framework of respect and good manners, and everyone’s rights in this area are protected under the law."

I would love to hear what, exactly, was "defamatory" in Richard Dawkins's website!! That humans evolved from apes?  What?  Or, was Dawkins merely "insulting"??
