Hi. I deleted the second thread (please just post once if you're posting the exact same content) and this isn't national news, so I'm moving this to "media".

Thanks for putting it in the correct area, Maysie. Sorry for the duplicate post.

No probsies. Thanks for letting us know about the site.

I sort of do the same thing except I use a Forum format instead of .html pages.

Umm who exactly are you at newsdesk? there are no links (other than tips), no contact info, no mandate.... Whom or what exactly do you represent?

Just curious.

... and I can't find any info about which media are being aggregated.

One former Soviet news journalist asked a western reporter how they were able to have all news agencies in-sync and reporting exactly the same news stories telling exactly the same political points of view ie. information approved of by the state. He added that in the former USSR, news journalists had to be threatened with their jobs and coercion to extremes in order to maintain continuity of truth.

I visit this site sometimes.

I create or design websites as a hobby of sorts since I retired 10 years ago.

The most recent one I designed was for a Federal Government department. It has all the toys you can possibly imagine. (Live Chat, Forums and whatever.)

It's a "Social Community" . It has all the toys that FaceBook has, and more. You can even import your FaceBook page.

I visited the Canadian News Aggregator site mentioned in the first post of this thread.

It seems to me that it is all auto-pilot. Joomla has thousands of templates for this type of site.

(I could be wrong.)

No wonder the Soviet Union fell. After who knows how many years of Soviet education, the man apparently had no clue about some very basic facts about the workings of capitalism. Off topic, I know. But not entirely Wink

If you have the "status bar" active on your browser it will show the link to the story provider if you roll your mouse over it.

Yes. It is very strange, if not suspicious, for a site so slick to not have easily traceable "about us" info--unless it is a prototype.

But if you count the number of "pro", "neutral", and "anti" stories referring to Harper versus Iggy, over the days, a preference would seem to emerge.

There was also this story in the G & Mail

Quote:
Monday, January 20, 2003 – Page B2

CanWest Global Communications Corp. is weeks away from launching this country's most aggressive attempt to centralize editorial operations across a newspaper chain.

Some time next month, the Canada News Desk is expected to begin operations in Winnipeg, where CanWest is based. The desk will act as a news hub for the Southam newspaper chain, co-ordinating stories and coverage of CanWest's 12 big-city daily newspapers. It will largely supplant Southam's news network and services, an operation with about 40 editorial staff in Ottawa and technical support in Hamilton...

Is this the same Canada News Desk though the details of the agregator site owners are hidden?
Curiously, the site also links to non Canwest stories including from its solvent rival, The  G & Mail.

If their is to be any taxpayer bailout of CanWest it will certainly be by a Harper Government.

It would be nice to have money coming in from the site since I could use the dough these days, but sadly that is not the case. I am just an under-employed freelance web programmer with a healthy news addiction. You are right about one thing though: I originally developed the interface as a demo for a prospective client's intranet.

Big thanks for calling it slick though!

I can assure you, I am not a drone of CanWest. God, no.

Although, it would be nice to have a staff of what, 40 people that article quoted above said?... to update a simple one page website a few times a day?

remind remind's picture

How can you call yours the same as Canwest?

Plus the news you carry is all smarmy MsM stuff.

Unionist

Which media do you aggregate, canadanewsdesk?

canadanewsdesk canadanewsdesk's picture

I aggregate anything that catches my eye. If I think it's interesting, I post it. Really, there is no criteria.

I do try and focus on Canadian MSM, Alternative and Blog media though. But like most Canadians, I can't help but take a bit of an interest in what is happening down South and around the world. :)

As far as the CanWest thing goes, well, I didn't even know about that until it was brought up in this thread. If I beat them to a good domain name... ha! Tough for them.

Octomom's gunna have half her uterus removed.

I feel better informed already.

I do post non-MSM stuff. But there is more MSM out there than non-MSM; so it's kind of unavoidable since they are more up-to-the minute. I think you'll find that I mix-in alternative, blog and local media in the editorials/columnist section every day. I think I even had a Rabble piece in their a day or two ago.

And, of course, if you find something out there that you think deserves attention please pass it along as a tip. If I think it's interesting too I'll definitely post it!

Some people like the random TMZ-style stuff. Like my mom and sister. Just trying to have something in there for everybody. :)

Tommy_Paine

Yes, but the problem with that is you end up boring/offending both ends of the spectrum.

I think there's a market for a TMZ type aggregate,  and an aggregate that attempts to be the "aggregate of record".  But it doesn't work mashed together.   At least I don't think so.

That's a really good point. I should keep the TMZ stuff in the sidebar.
