Tech issues on babble

Continue with tech issues here.

jas

I would like to repost my post from the thread just closed:

Cutting and pasting to quote from various sources in a single post has become a very frustrating task, now. Even right-clicking the mouse (which we never had to do before), you often have to click below where you want to insert, to avoid highlighting the entire phrase preceding the insert, thereby inadvertently erasing and inserting in place of it. Having to use the 'insert text' window when you use ctrl-v is a completely unnecessary step and also weirds up the text format.

In short, cutting and pasting now involves several extra steps, sometimes that you have to correct and repeat to get it right, that were never required before - and for no apparent reason or benefit - !?

Michelle, I clicked enable/disable rich text dozens of times, it makes no difference, both look exactly the same, except when enable rich text is on the response window is smaller. And no formatting capabilities are available eithewr way.

When

Michelle

Hmm.  In that case, I have no idea what to tell you.

Here is a form where you can contact our tech team directly about this issue:

http://rabble.ca/contact

This is beyond me, I'm afraid - I can troubleshoot basic problems, but this doesn't sound like something I can fix...

remind remind's picture

Actually, as of late yesterday, my formating bar was back, and still is,  and so to is my rich text,  so all is fine in my tech world.

Sorry should of posted that here, instead of just noting it in the thread where it started functioning again.

Not a tech issue exactly, but I want to go back to a couple earlier threads but theres no longer previous X posts from Y posters (nor any member profiles at all anymore, apparently) to use as a handy guide (previous thread is closed now and don't want to open up another just for that)  So.  Is there any quick way to find previous threads when youve been away awhile?    I'll check back later.

Erik Redburn

Ok.  Another pressing question, posted here in a not quite appropriate thread, as I can't seem to post it elsewhere for some other reason.  I just wasted a half hr or more writing out a post to start a new thread with, but found no button to press except "preview" whereupon I got the first couple sentences as it would look but STill no POST button.  When I returned the whole message was gone.  Has that happened to anyone else and is there something I missed?  Must be, unless I have a particular glitch.

o na erik u gotta scroll to the bottom n press submit after u press preview the 1st time

I find that when I cut and paste from an article on the web, I have to disable rich text first, or I get this message:

"Do you want to allow this webpage to access your Clipboard?"  If I allow, then the formatting gets screwed up. If I don't allow, then it won't cut and paste.

Recently, the HTML editor has failed to paste intermittently when I've hit update. It seems to be about 50/50 as to whether it's going to accept my HTML input. Makes it kind of frustrating trying to provide links.

Erik Redburn

Yup, looks like you were right, don't know how I missed it first time but thanks.  Back in business again.

Erik Redburn

Ah ok, that might explain it, let's try again.

I don't even bother with the limited, counterintuitive, and worthless function buttons.  Since the software writers, in a flash of optative theater brilliance, decided we didn't need those functions which we use the most, I end up manually entering quotes and urls.

Unionist

Ditto.

Me too. I assume it's an experiment to force us to feel like workers as we manually enter tags, putting us in touch more closely with our labour and production. A sort of creeping luddism. Bravo, rabble.ca!

Wilf Day

This isn't an issue unique to babble, but I'm posting out of frustration.

I don't know how widespread this problem is, but in Port Hope for the last two days we have some kind of "active pattern" roving malfunctions which mean that, for an hour or two, we can't log on to the internet, and then we can again. It's been driving me nuts for the last two days, because the bell techies couldn't figure it out, and kept trying different means to cure my computer or modem, which eventually worked, but not (I now know) because of what they had done. One time one of them put me through to the "line test" folks because I had been referred for a line test 24 hours ago and it hadn't happened due to the backlog, so he used his hotline and got me through. I got an instant line test, and at last, an answer. "Believe it or not, your line is perfect." He then told me a bunch of techie jargon which seemed to amount to this: "we have some kind of malfunction in the 905/705 area (!!!???) which we have been trying to diagnose for the last two days." I was not surprised: my daughter, three blocks away, had been having the same problem, and she had just told me that hers had been "escalated" to someone who told her they were working on a problem and it wasn't just her.

Anyone else heard of this?

I have a weird problem, and only with Babble: the question mark on my keypad doesn`t work; instead of a question mark, I get this: É

Why would I get É instead of a question markÉÉÉ  And only on Babble - nowhere elseÉÉÉÉ

Everything else on my keypad works fine.

No it doesn't - look how you just spelled "doesn`t". You've slipped into a French keyboard. Try holding down the Alt key and then tap the Left Shift key once and see what happens. Get back to me.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'll give it a try - the problem is on my new laptop computer. I'll get back to you after supper, as I'll be out of the house until then.

Noise

Wilf...I can confirm a router issue for ya but not much else.  rumour is a badly failed equipment install/upgrade was the root issue...but thats rumour.

Unionist is right BoomBoom, on your task bar you should see a lil keyboard that'll usually read EN but now will probably say FR.  Clicking on it should bring it up so you can change it.  On some of them tiny laptops, it's easy to accidentally switch it.

Cool. By the way, I'll bet if you go Shift-6, you'll get a question mark. Try that before you try my Alt-Shift trick.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I`m back. I tried everything suggested, and the only thing that works is Shift-6. I can`t find anything anywhere (incuding in the Dell handbook) about changing back and forth between English and French keyboards. I`ll ask the local techie when he comes back from fishing later this week. Oh, here`s the result of Shift-6: ???????Laughing

I assume you've got windows going, from your start menu:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language options

I'm guessing that the first tab that comes up here will have a drop down menu with French (Canada).   Change that over to English (Canada)...actually, English US works too (I don't notice much of a difference atleast)

Oh, it won't be in a Dell handbook...atleast I don't think it will be, this is purely a windows option I think.

I did as you suggested, and everything was in the default mode (English-Canada). However, when I press the Question Mark key, I get this: ÉÉÉÉÉÉ

Fortunately, Shift-6 gives me: ?????

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Oh! I found the solution - I added the Language function to the toolbar - and I have a choice of French - US - MultiLingual. I selected US and problem solved!!

The question mark key gives me: ?????

Hallelujah!Laughing

You could have just stopped asking questions, Boom Boom. Much simpler solution.Wink

I think this question has been answered earlier, but I'll ask again. Are old babble threads gone forever? I tried to access the old "property rights" thread I started about three years ago, and couldn't get to it. There's a lot of information in that thread IIRC.

Caissa

My "Go to new" button is missing.

remind remind's picture

The threads are all wonky today, first post of every thread shows up like it is a column posting, no name appears,  with a duplicate banner  title headline

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Yeah, same here - I thought I was on LSD or something when I saw the double title in every thread.Innocent

remind remind's picture

Well I would have been worried about that  if there were green lfying skeletons! ;)

Now there are threads showing up that only have the last post in block format appearing.

Yes. Babble is broken again.

Michelle

Thanks for the heads up - I didn't have time to respond here, but I sent off a quick e-mail and they fixed it up - the problem was that they were installing something new elsewhere and it affected babble, but they corrected it.

As for old threads - sigh.  And sob.  I can't even go there.  They're still around.  When they'll be public?  I'm not even going to venture a guess - I've done it before and been wrong, so now I'm just going to wait and hope, and perhaps someday I'll be pleasantly surprised by the old thread fairy. :(

Me three, I still can't figure it all out.  I find most computer technology to be almost designed to be counterintuitive though, even my MS word processor keeps getting more junk installed at the expense of easy to handle...well, word processing.  Maybe my single-use purposes are too simple.  I almost miss the day of old fashioned linear analog engineering.  Something that can be figured out by deduction or process of elimination even by amateurs like myself, rather than hair tearing osmosis.  Kicking the beast isn't even an option anymore.

Thanks for answering my question though.  My timing at least maybe impriving slightly.

My signature appears at the end of my posts in about half of all forums (although I usually manually delete it every time I post). I have no way to edit the sig to make it vanish. I see Sven's signature also appear. Since sigs are disliked here, I'd remove mine, but can't since I can't find any "edit signature" option.

al-Qa'bong

Does the PM function work?

Erik Redburn

I just figured out how to find previous threads by users.  So simple I can only say...Duh on my part.  Actually better than before as more complete except it only goes back since the turnover. There you go, a rare Babble compliment.  And a sincere one too.  (I also like babble keeping the same distinctive colour scheme, and how we can edit without having it noted every time -nice for compulsive but slow writers like me.  Never let it be said I'm entirely negative)

Now that I've demonstrated my continued techno-fauxbia, I have two hopefully reasonable ideas, Michelle or Oldgoat, if youre looking.

One:  How about a semi-automatic link to subjects posted on rabble front page, that is, every rabble feature article, having a direct link to a babble commentary but printed right underneath the feature itself?   May take a non-automatic click or two by whoever posts it to make it appear in babble's feature section, but this way it could integrate the two sections a little more, get more attention to the front page contributers from babble regulars who usually just turn here, while drawing other mostly rabble readers in here.   Give the authors work more attention all around.  Just a thought.

The other:  If you can't get all the old stuff back on by its sheer size, how about just going back a year or two?  Then add on when can.  Doesn't even need to be something you can add comments to to start, just viewable via some archiving?  Sometimes compromises are better than nothing, if only to start.  I doubt it'll cost you more than several weekends of hair pulling and swearing and another hundred K or so....

al-Qa'bong

OK, Roger; out.

I have a tech issue regarding logging in and my password. I can only log-in by requesting a new password.

I got logged out, and when I could not log-in using my existing password. I requested a new password, which allows me to login once. I then went to the edit tab on my profile, and changed my password back to what it was before I requested a new password. To confirm whether or not I could use this password, I logged out, and tried to log back in using the again current password. Again I was not able to log-in using the current password. I once again had to request a new password, which is once again single use only.

I have once again changed my password back to what it was before this incident, but I am sure the software will not allow me to use it to log-in if I get logged out again.

I should not have to request a new password every time I want to log-in to rabble.

[edited to add]

I've now been able to successfully log-in to my rabble account using the password I gave myself. Hopefully this works when I get logged out in the future. Though why I ever got logged out in the first place is a mystery, since the "remember me" button should ensure I remain logged-in in perpetuity unless I hit the log out button, which I did not before this incident.
