Current TV coming to Canada

Will it make a difference in what our "other" media covers, and how they cover it?

Quote:
Current TV, the user-generated news network founded by Al Gore, just got the green light to operate in Canada.

This makes Canada the fifth country to have a local Current TV operation after the U.S., Britain, Ireland and Italy.

The youth-oriented, 24-hour channel features short programming on several topics, many of which are made by the viewers themselves.

While the channel is disclosing few specifics about programming, it expects to go live late this year.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission this week gave Current TV a Category 2 specialty licence, which means it can be carried optionally by cable or satellite providers.

The channel is a partnership between San Francisco-based Current TV and the CBC, which owns 80% of the joint venture. One condition of the licence is that 35% of all content must be Canadian.

The Ceeb's involvement here puzzles me.  Going to have to do some research.

This is the first I've heard of Current TV. I didn't see it in the satellite lineup for ExpressVu last time I looked (admittedly a while ago).

I think it starts broadcasting later this summer, boom boom.

The first I heard of them was when 2 of their reporters were sentenced last week to 12 years hard labour in North Korea.

Interesting!  I'm going to move this to the media forum...

CNN has been trying to adopt a quasi current t.v. approach.  They're always soliciting stuff from viewers.  However, I don't think it works very well.  I find it as annoying as hell.
