APA: Programs to change gays to straights don't work

Quote:
(CNN) -- The American Psychological Association concluded Wednesday that there is little evidence that efforts to change a person's sexual orientation from gay or lesbian to heterosexual are effective.

In addition, the 138-page report -- covering 87 peer-reviewed studies -- said that such efforts may cause harm.

"Contrary to claims of sexual orientation change advocates and practitioners, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation," said Judith M. Glassgold, chairwoman of the task force that presented the report at the group's annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. The Washington-based association represents more than 150,000 members.

"At most, certain studies suggested that some individuals learned how to ignore or not act on their homosexual attractions. Yet, these studies did not indicate for whom this was possible, how long it lasted or its long-term mental health effects. Also, this result was much less likely to be true for people who started out only attracted to people of the same sex."

In response, the group's governing Council of Representatives passed a resolution Wednesday urging mental health professionals not to recommend to their clients that they can change their sexual orientation through therapy or any other methods.

Nice to know the APA is right on top of current relevant issues based in the real world.

Tongue out

Should we break it to them that the reverse is not true? Oh damn, there I go spreading that old rumour about six packs again.Laughing

Well, I do think it's important that there be institutional support from organizations like the APA when it comes to debunking this kind of crap.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there - unfortunately this includes right-wing religious cranks who become doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists - who believe in these idiotic programs, and lend their professional cred to them, which tricks ignorant people who are told by their churches what's true and what isn't.

Star Spangled C...

They needed a 183 page study to prove this? What's next, a 200 page report from the American Zoological Association titled "Yes, Bears Do Shit in the Woods"?

Star Spangled, that's their 2011 new release. Please don't spoil the hype. Tongue out

Michelle

I know, I know. :)  I'm just saying, there are a lot of people out there who believe these religious cranks, because in the US (and here too, to a smaller degree), they've set up their own universities, they have infiltrated medical establishments, and the more that medical industry associations repudiate this crap, the less able these "profesionals" will be to use their medical and health practitioner credentials to push this pseudoscience.

From a rudimentary science standpoint, if sexual orientation modification is possible it should most likely be a symmetrical process.

They should try and find 100 hitherto heterosexual christians, and ask them to become committed homosexuals by means of both talk and electroshock therapy, so as to prove that a switch can take place.

Michelle

Hee!  Excellent idea!  All in the name of science, you understand.  :D

Just give them a six pack.

And give the other group some paint swatches?

Well, now that you mention it, I have often observed that a lot of these people talk as if, with just the slightest bit of encouragement (or a smidgeon less discouragement), pretty well everyone would be gay. More than once, I have wondered if that's how they feel personally: i.e., that with just the slightest bit of encouragement (or a smidgeon less discouragement), they would be gay.
