Canada Post lost my parcel

It was only going across town.  It was properly addressed and had a return address visible.  The post office claims it was delivered to my house.  I never got it.  So I'm thinking either:

(a) It was stolen off my front porch (unlikely) or

(b) It was delivered to the wrong address and someone in that household just tossed it in the trash (also unlikely).

So where the hell do missing parcels go?  I've never had this happen before.

If it's any help, you're not alone.

That's why, if the package is truly important you either use a courier service or, if you want to use the mail system you send things registered, return receipt requested.

1. Check for the postal package delivery card in your mail,  as the parcel might be at your local post office parcel outlet. When I mail my daughter stuff to Vic, they registered it as being delivered, when they have really just given out the card. They do not leave parcels on doorstep, if no one is home, and if they are too big for your mail box they automatticaly go to the parcel distribution outlet for your area.

2. If the person who sent it still has the counter slip with the package delivery number on it, you can go to the parcel outlet with said number and get them to do a search for it on their shelves.

I didn't receive a delivery card but I had the parcel outlet check (by name/postal code) anyway.  No luck.  I really didn't know that things actually get "lost in the mail."  I thought that was just a cliche.  I'm kind of surprised the sender just chucked it in the mail.  I would have happily gone to pick it up or sprung for courier charges.  It's been missing for over a month.  Is there any chance it'll show up?

It shoulda got sent back to sender by now.

My husband just lost a $400 dvd player through canada post. It was to be delivered August 18th. It was insured and sent xpress post. It arrived in our city on the 18th and they claim they have no clue where it is. I believe it was stolen. I was home for 3 days waiting, so wasn't stolen from my home, nor was it delivered to anyone else. Canada Post intially told us it was invalid address and undeliverable. Now they claim that address was correct and are going to pay the insurance settlement to the sender. Problem is, we want this player more than the money. As G Pie mentioned above, all those options unlikely. What is likely is that someone working for Canada Post is now sitting in their living room watching our player or has it in classifieds to sell. That is the option that I truly believe happened to us. Where do all those so called lost packages go? I don't think there is a huge wearhouse that will hold this stuff forever. No, the postal sorters/workers are enjoying these lost parcels knowing they are insured.

What about the private enterprise jackals and friends of the party CP contracts out to for delivering rural route mail and overflow at holiday times? I've seen some pretty shady looking characters transporting mail and packages around this corner of the frozen Puerto Rico.

As someone who in another life a couple of decades ago worked for Canada Post, nobody with a brain who works there steals anything.   There is nothing worth stealing that's worth losing your job over.   That's the view of 99.99999% of Canada Post workers.

The post office also has internal security folks...and they sometimes try to set people up.   So unless you're incredibly stupid, you don't steal.

Does stuff get lost?   Of course it does.

I've had courier companies lose stuff too.   Shit happens.   That's life...and if you're smart, you use a trackable service that carries insurance.

Techno geek that I am ...just curious.   What kind of DVD player was it such that it was worth $400?

In my hometown CP was a place where veterans of war and the disabled were hired because the private sector lived by its own rules. Today it's friends of the two old line parties, and mainly the Liberals, who end up with mail and parcel distribution contracts. The letter carriers are still CP and unionized though. Creeping privatization is still on their tiny minds under influence of the 2nd-hand neoliberal kool aid still.

Wow, what's that about?

Michelle

I think it was a sloppy construction - I think he was referring to the tiny little minds of the two old line parties, not the CP carriers, who most certainly don't have tiny little minds. :)

triciamarie

Oops, sorry Fidel.

Fidel

Yes, "their tiny minds" was an ambiguous reference to those dregs in government with the authority to pawn off Canada Post for a bit o kick-back and graft.

There is a chance it will be returned to sender, but oddly enough it can take over a month for this to actually happen.  It sits in some PO for a couple of weeks, another delivery notice sent out (if it is going to the right address), and waits for someone to pick it up.  When that doesn't happen it will be sent back to the main office, where eventually it will be returned to sender.  I had a parcel returned undelivered to me after at least 5 weeks, but it depends on what the problem was in the first place.  Unless the sender sent it out Xpresspost or something with a tracking #, there is no way CP could seriously tell you that it was delivered to the right place or at all.   The only way for them to know is with a tracking #, and that, considering it didn't reach you, can be looked at and traced to see that it was directed correctly.  You can actually see a copy probably (I have, so it is possible).  If the parcel went to postal outlet, then it should be possible to trace there as well.  Tracing and tracking takes a REALLY LONG TIME.

File your complaint, or maybe the sender has to do this, preferably with the tracking info, if any, and go from there with a claim.  Odd how motivated places get when there is a complaint on file.  Not that anything happens.  In my location, I receive packages fairly reguarly, at a residence.  In spite of the fact that I work from home, am home during the day, and the parcel delivery from CP has access to the building, not once has a parcel actually been delivered to my door.   The notification card, however, makes it into my mailbox, dropped off by the carrier too lazy or unmotivated to press the elevator button and go up two flights to knock on my door.  They then, box under their arm, return to their vehicle and drive away.

G. Muffin

It did have a tracking number but unfortunately Canada Post's record for that number says it was delivered which is incorrect.  This was ages ago (July sometime) and the package never showed up here nor was it ever returned to the sender.  I guess it's just lost in the ether.  So, to whomever ended up with my package of confidential medical records, enjoy!

I suggest you write and perform a song on YouTube.

"Canada Post loses parcels!"

Later, you can get on a CTV promo by singing about the evil cable and satellite companies who are hurting local television by wanting to charge consumers more and keeping the profits.

My girlfriend sent me a birthday gift two weeks ago. She lives in Australia and I live in Canada. I haven't received it still. It was a $300+ gift and I am thinking it's stolen. I am getting mad at Canada Post or Australian Post (Whatever they call it).

As long as Purolator isn't the courier.

We were supposed to have received something sent though Purolator, but the delivery guy sent it to another address, someone there signed for it, and we never saw it.

Mme/ Qa'bong complained, as she called the people who sent us the parcel to find out what happened.  Purolator first responded by saying that they did deliver to our place, and the signature is hard to read, so it must have been us.  Then they changed their story and said they came to our house, nobody was there (Mme. alQ was at home all that day) , so they gave the parcel to a neighbour, who signed for it, but they couldn't tell us which neighbour.

...ummm...

Purolator Canada is owned outright by Canada Post.

Get out of town!  Really?

SORRY, BUT THAT TOO IS WRONG:(

CANADA POST LOSES PARCELS THAT ARE ALSO TRACKABLE AND REGISTERED.

BECAUSE IF YOU ARE NOT HOME TO RECEIVE IT, AND THEY LEAVE THE DELIVERY NOTICE CAD/C.O.D IT CAN STILL GO MISSING!

I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME 1 WEEK AGO AND THEY STILL CANT FIND IT!

THE TRACKING SHOWS THE ITEM IS AT A CANADA POST PICK UP, AT SHOPPERS DRUG MART. BUT IT IS NOT THERE!

I HAVE GONE BACK 4 TIMES ALREADY AND THE LADY THERE HAS SEARCHED EVERYWHERE AND SHE TOLD ME ALL I CAN DO IS CALL CANADA POST!

AND I HAVE OPENED A SERVICE TICKET BUT I JUST HAVE GRIM FEELING THAT IT WILL NEVER BE FOUND!

CANADA POST YOU SUCK!

UPS is much worse. The only service I can recommend for reliability is FedEx.

abnormal

Even FedEx is fallible - I've had them leave packages in my mailbox that were clearly marked as requiring a signature.  In one case I was tracking a very important delivery on line and it suddenly showed as having arrived at the delivery centre in Paris France (sorry, neither sender or receiver was on that side of the pond).

I've had packages simply disappear using DHL

A friend runs a major shipping company and he's banned everyone worldwide from using TNT

And the list goes on.
