Catholic Church comments: Sex abuse with kids not Pedophilia!

your broken saint, your ancient story--- all lies.

Wow.  Incredible!

No explanation for the young girls that were molested?  Homosexual priests with vision problems?

The link is a report of a report of a report, so here is a link to what appears to be the Vatican's actual statement, entitled "Vatican Sets Record Straight on Sexual Abuse." It is as shameful as described.

It appears also to have been issued in response to a report and accusations presented by Keith Porteous Wood, Executive Director of the National Secular Society, speaking in his capacity as international representative of the International Humanist and Ethical Union, to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva:

Quote:
Keith Porteous Wood accuses the Roman Catholic Church of covering up child abuse in ways that permitted it to be perpetuated. It is thought that this is the first time the Vatican has been directly criticised on the floor of the UNHRC.

See him here on YouTube.

One can understand the need of the Holy Ones to respond.

It would be interesting to have access to all the data relied upon in that statement.  I don't doubt that out and out  lies have been avoided.  But, if the data is just comparing Catholic Priests,  as it seems to do, and excludes other employees, like brothers and nuns and other functionaries of the church, but doesn't do the same for Protestant or Jewish organizations, we can see how the statistics can be skewed.

And, the equivocation of pedophilia and ephebophilia is a smarmy, spitefull and subtly hatefull dodge.

Be that as it may, it would be surprising to me that if we included the Catholic church amoung a study of other institutions that we'd find pedophilia more rampant in one organisation than another.   It's likely a fairly similar percentage across the board.

At least, that's what I'd expect.

The issue that is not addressed is the cover up.  The constant cover up.  The constant re-victimization, the constant enabling of these crimes.

Unionist

And it's not just about "paedophilia", however that's defined and diagnosed. It's about abuse. The nine-year Irish report referenced in other threads detailed not just sexual assault, but also torture of all kinds, both physical and mental. Tommy's phrase "smarmy, spiteful, and subtly hateful dodge" pretty well covers the Church's defence mode.

Tommy_Paine

And, if you take a reductionist view to the argument presented, it's essentially an attempt to say "but those other guys are worse."  Like, a kid caught vandalizing saying,  "But Johnny broke three more windows than I did".   Okay,  maybe so, maybe not, but we know you broke some windows, and that's what we're talking about here.

Anyone who's had kids knows that argument, and if you're parenting with any skill at all, you dismissed it pretty quick.

So the Church tries to make this a gay issue, with the added bonus of floating the old canard linking homosexuality with paedophilia, and they drag Protestants and Jews in front of them, like the cowardly bad guy in a "B"  western grabs a woman to use as a human shield agaisnt the good guy's bullets.

As for the current Irish revelations, the newest outrage there is that government cut a deal with the church, and gave blanket immunity from prosecution to Church administrators and perpetrators.

And, lost in the news about the Lahey arrest, is the workings of the deal he put together for victims, in which the Diocese picked up the cost of the settlement, leaving the coffers of the church at large whole.

Think about the way that actually works.

It's more than insidious.

It's evil.

Further to that, there's an entire dedicated to discussing the Irish tragedy.

Lahey claims that the pictures of 8-yr old children found on his laptop at a Canadian airport were really those of 20 and 21-yr old males! Just as French minister of Culture Frederic Mitterand is claiming that when he wrote of the boys he was so excited about buggering in Thailand all his life, he really meant men... Another attempt to turn his child abuse into a normal gay identity that would put him above suspicion asnd make his accusers into bigots. What a low blow to gays!

It is amazing that people buy into this shit, as they must, or they would not be saying it, and they would not continue to be supporting the Catholic Church and the french Minister.

martin dufresne

I doubt that very many ordinary people "buy into this". They are not at liberty of dumping Lahey from the Roman Catholic Church, or of pulling Polanski off his musty throne, especially as other filmmakers and actors/actresses are rallying around him: Costa-Gravas ("she looked 25!"), Scorsese, Woody Allen, Wim Wenders, Pedro Almadovar, Ettore Scola, Bertrand Tavernier, the Dardenne brothers, Emir Kusturica...

French Culture Minister Frederic "Never-met-a-rapist-I-didn't-feel-kinship-with" Mitterand is in increasingly hot water now, after it was revealed in Île de la Réunion - a French territory -, that he volunteered as character witness for two youths from Ile de la Réunion who had raped a young girl at knife-point. He even offered to take them in in his fancy government-issued Rome palace, the famed Villa Médicis.

Story from Bangkok Post:

French minister now in rape scandal
Published: 10/10/2009 at 10:17 PM
Online news: Breakingnews

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand was back in the spotlight Saturday for standing as character reference for two rapists after a row over his admission of paying "boys'' for sex.

Mitterrand, an urbane television personality and a nephew of former Socialist president Francois Mitterrand, adopted a pugnacious tone and threatened legal action over what he said was a "new orchestrated campaign of insensitive calumny.''

Mitterrand told a news conference in Bordeaux, southwestern France, that he "will launch legal action against those who are complicit in the latest ignominy.''

Earlier in the day, Mitterrand _ who was in Bordeaux for the opening of an art exhibition _ was jostled by about 30 far-right supporters who screamed "Hands off our children,'' and "Mitterrand resign.''

Marine Le Pen, the vice-president of the far-right National Front party, on Saturday lambasted Mitterrand for being a "false witness,'' and "trying to directly influence a judge,'' with his testimonial.

The latest scandal emerged just after Mitterrand seemed to have ridden out a furore over his 2005 autobiographical novel "La Mauvaise Vie'' (The Bad Life) in which the hero describes paying Asian boys for sex.

Mitterrand had angrily denied having ever engaged in paedophile acts or condoning sex tourism.

"I absolutely condemn sexual tourism (and) I condemn paedophilia in which I have never in any way participated, and all the people who accuse me of that type of thing should be ashamed,'' the 62-year-old told TF1 television.

The latest controversy emerged after a French newspaper said Mitterrand had testified to the "good character'' of two youths in the French overseas territory of La Reunion charged with the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl.

The minister on Saturday said he was godfather to one of the youths, whose mother is a former make-up artist, and underlined that his letter was a "gesture of compassion and generosity'' to a "modest'' family in "great distress.''

He underlined that he had met his godson "three times in (my) life.''

"Is it not a shame that this letter has found its way in all the Internet networks?'' he said, calling it an "ignominy,'' a "shame,'' and "manipulation.''

They call this character an "ex-priest" - probably to avoid difficulty with the armies of Catholic Church lawyers - even though he was an ordained priest at the time he was alleged to have sexually abused Haitian youths:

Quote:

A former Windsor priest arrested in the Dominican Republic and accused of sexually abusing teenage boys in Haiti will be tried in Ontario, a spokeswoman for the Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Thursday.

John Duarte, 44, is currently being held in custody in the D.R. awaiting extradition to Canada, according to Const. Shawna Coulter. He has been charged with nine counts of sexual exploitation, she said.

anybody disagree with or have comments on this excerpt from the Christian Science Monitor article cited in the report:

Despite headlines focusing on the priest pedophile problem in the Roman Catholic Church, most American churches being hit with child sexual-abuse allegations are Protestant, and most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers.

Other than the fact that it's 7.5 years old and reports on an alleged "national survey" (??) conducted by some obviously defunct organization ("Christian Ministry Resources", which publishes tax and legal advice to 75,000 congregations (!!!!!) and 1000 "denominational agencies", whatever that could possibly mean, yet has no website in 2009...) which doesn't disclose its ownership or interest or even explain whom it polled before coming to such "scientific" conclusions as this:

"What drove leaders to begin to respond to this issue was not the welfare of children," Cobble says. "It was fear of large, costly lawsuits."

Other than that, I repeat, I have no comments on that "excerpt".

Some apologists try to distinguish "church volunteers" from clergy in an effort to absolve the Church. Here is the latest "volunteer" to get caught in our area:
