Nuit Blanche 2009

Anyone make it to Nuit Blanche in Toronto last night? What did you do? Impressions?

I went for the first time. I was a bit hesitant because of corporate sponsorship but went with an open mind and had a really good time. There were gobs of people all over the place in the middle of the night.

We caught:

  • a couple of installations at the Wychwood Barns
  • a very interesting peep show at the Casa Loma stables
  • tour of the Conservatory of Music addition where musicians throughout the building were playing one note with singers singing the same note in the new concert hall -  very captivating
  • Vanity Fair photos at the ROM - zillions of them
  • some dance at the Distillery
  • some buskers

I would definitely go again (weather permitting).

We went to the downtown core, and I wouldn't recommend going there in the early evening - hugely crowded, long line-ups everywhere.  We tried to see a couple of installations around the Eaton Centre and there were 1-2 hour waits.  We waited half an hour at the Massey Hall installation only to arrive at a sign telling us it was a further 75-minute wait when we reached that point, so we gave up.

I had a great time last year, and next year resolve to go either very late (ie early in the morning), and/or avoid the downtown core, instead going to one of the other zones, like in the west end closer to where I live.

The kids did enjoy the ghost chorus, the people in sheets walking slowly in circles, singing dead slang.  And the dancers in Dundas Square.  And the people playing Monopoly with real money.
