babble get-together in Toronto, this Sat. Oct. 10, 7 p.m.!

Tommy_Paine and Rebecca West are coming to visit Toronto this weekend, and we have plans to get together on Saturday night.  And since they haven't met very many Toronto babblers yet, we thought we'd invite everyone else too!

We're going to go to The Old Nick again, around 7 p.m. or so, Saturday, October 10th.

The address is 123 Danforth Avenue (just a few doors east of Danforth and Broadview on the south side of the street).

So far, the following people are in: me, Rebecca West, Tommy_Paine, radiorahim...and hopefully you too!  I know it's kind of last-minute, and it's Thanksgiving weekend.  But hey, at least you won't have to put up with your right-wing uncle at THIS table!

Warning: I'll be obnoxiously bumping this thread between now and Saturday.

Michelle

Bump!  See?  Pretty obnoxious, huh?

johnpauljones

sounds like a great time. alas it is a Jewish holiday this weekend -- Simcha Torah and Shemini Etzeret -- So i will not be able to attend.

jrootham

I'm double booked but the dance is just down the street.  Should be around for a while.

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

Will there be foam rubber baseball bats on hand? If so, is the mock combat to be gladitorial exhibition bouts (one on one), teams or a general melee till only one is left standing?

Michelle

Hey, feel free to bring a foam rubber bat if you want to!

Michelle

Sorry you can't make it, johnpauljones.

Great, jrootham, looking forward to seeing you, however briefly. :)

Weltschmerz

I will be down in beautiful Belleville celebrating Thanksgiving with the familial units.

So question; when you meet someone IRL, do you start referring to them by his/her name, or do you still use the online handle?  Just curious.

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

Michelle, while I am all in favour of friction burn (as opposed to blood) sports, I tend to prefer to be a spectator (read instigator) rather than a participant. Also there is the question of whether or not I have the appropriate travel documents to be admitted into the sanctum of the Central Canadian Overlords. But like a loyal little subject of the empire I turn up from time to time to my little bit to "bump" up the agenda of the overlords. Does this make me a lackey?

remind remind's picture

"Does this make me a lackey?" :D

No it makes  you a "bag"kitty, as opposed to a bagman. :D

Michelle

Well, if you bring the bats, that makes you the instigator, especially if you just dump them on the table and watch everyone ELSE bat each other with them.

Weltschmerz, depends on the person, really.  If the person's name on babble sounds like a real first name, I find it difficult to stop calling them by their babble name.  For instance, I still occasionally catch myself starting to say "Tommy" to Tommy_Paine.  And I occasionally address e-mails to "Maysie" and, previously, "bigcitygal".

Polunatic, never, because I know him better in his real life form than his babbler form.  jrootham, no, because "jrootham" doesn't sound like a first name.  Although sometimes it takes me a moment to remember what the "j" stands for!  (I mean, I KNOW what it stands for, but sometimes it doesn't click in immediately.)

People always seem to call me by my babble handle, though.  I don't understand it.

I want to know this too.  Also, does the relationship between babblers change once they've met in person?

ETA:  Cross posted.

oldgoat

People usually meet me and say "uh...yeah, I guess oldgoat works".

Tommy_Paine

Just don't call me late for dinner.

It's odd, the few times Michelle has called me "Tommy" I remember, because I mentally answered to it just as I would my real name.

Yeah.  I babble too much.

I'm looking forward to this already.

Has there ever been a west coast version?

Not in Toronto.

And what's Hoshana Rabbah? Chopped liver?

Oh, sorry, you said the weekend...

Maysie Maysie's picture

Michelle, thanks for arranging this.

I have a commitment on Saturday at 5pm for a few hours but I will be there perhaps a bit later than 7. It will be nice to finally meet Tommy and Rebecca and to see jrootham, oldgoat and anyone else who's able to attend.

I'm leaving for Ottawa the next morning to be with my sweetie's parental units, so the timing is perfect. Plus that means I can't get too tipsy! Laughing

I think a lot of conversations start with "how do you get a beer around here?"

I believe so.  I missed it though.  There are often convention versions (not just the NDP).

Sineed

Looks like Arctic_Pig and I will be there (seems a bit silly using his babble name; he's posted twice, maybe).

Michelle

Hey, that's great!  I've been hoping you'd be able to show up to one sometime, Sineed. :)

No worries, May, it's likely that Tommy and Rebecca and radiorahim and I will be there for a good while.  We were planning to hang out anyhow.  So we'll see you when you get there. :)

G. Pie, I find that the relationship doesn't change so much as that I find it difficult to fight too hard with most of them on babble afterwards, because once you know someone in person, even just meeting them a couple of times, you always have this consciousness of them as a real live person who is nice and fun and just "good people".  So you tend not to assume the worst about the stuff they post, etc.

I'd love to see people organize babble get-togethers elsewhere.  Maybe we should appoint various regional people the babble social secretaries or something. :D  Timebandit can handle Saskatchewan (with back-up from al-Q), N.Beltov can be our Winnipeg correspondent (hey, has anyone seen him around lately?).  remind can coordinate BC, and Dana can provide, ahem, refreshments. :D

Seriously, though - I'd love to see stuff organized in other areas of the country.  We Torontonians shouldn't have ALL the fun.  Wasn't there a Vancouver meet-up a few years ago?

Joey Ramone

Joey's got some Thanksgiving cooking to do, but will try to make it for a pint.

(Ahem) Toronto is a region.

This habit is most entrenched in Quebec, where "the regions" always means "the rest of Quebec outside Montreal." I have seen no one say "Montreal is a region too." I guess they've given up.  Frown

In support of my position I cite the Courts of Justice Act. Ontario has eight regions: Northwest Region, Northeast Region, East Region, Central East Region, Toronto Region, Central West Region, Central South Region, and Southwest Region. Each of which has a "Regional Senior Judge" who runs the show in their region. The Honourable Edward F. Then was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1989, and in 2007 was appointed Regional Senior Justice for Toronto Region.

marzo

I can go.  I know what some of the babblers look like so I can easily find the table.

I didn't say it wasn't.  Usually Maysie is the Toronto region's babble social secretary. :D

Green Grouch

I may try to make it if my non-Babbling partner agrees. How will I know you all? Will oldgoat wear horns?

Caissa

No, tails.

Maysie Maysie's picture

By the wild looks in our eyes? By our babble tshirts? (hey oldgoat, wear yours!) By our earnest talk over organic local beer?

Laughing

But seriously, we usually take up the entire back space of the Old Nick, or half of it until more people come. If you wear something green we will know who you are though.

Smile

oldgoat

I may be stuck going to an in-law thanksgiving thingie in Kinmount.  Frown

Polunatic2

Thanks (once again) Michelle for setting this up. I'll try to drop by but it's unlikely.

NORthwest :) but really there's a west end and a east end and tingz are starting to gwan between them on that tip lol.

But better tell me what busses to take

Michelle

Same ones as in the last thread, R_P since it's the same place.  It's at Broadview subway station, so get yourself to a subway station (I assume Kipling or Islington) by whatever bus is easiest for you, then go east to Broadview station.

k so what about after that?and if there's drinking and since I dont carry ID should I just bring my own shit? (ill cop it from LCBO before I cut, dont ask how Laughing) or should I just bring a bleezy?

And real talk someone lightskin or white should walk wit me because I dont feel like getting arrested (im serious... lol)

How long you think it would take me from kp station. Proly take me 30-40 minutes bus ride to get to the station.

edit - how much are century sams around there? If its less there Ill cop it from there hoping the owner aint tripping about ID still. (I look like Im 20+ so... Cool)

Slumberjack

I'll be a little late getting there, what with travel to Toronto not scheduled until first week of November.

Michelle

R_P, you told us in another thread that you're 15.  You can't bring your own alcohol into a pub/restaurant, and I'm not going to encourage you to bring that or "bleezy" (not sure what that is) when you're underage.  Nor do I think it's a good idea for you to order alcohol underage and I would definitely encourage you not to do that.  And yes, most places do check ID.

If you'd like to come out, you're welcome.  Since it's a restaurant, they serve non-alcoholic drinks and food as well.  You should definitely clear it with your parents, though, since you are 15 and meeting people from online.  They are welcome to come along, too.  If you need help with directions or are feeling unsure about the transit routes, your parents may be able to help you.  Since this is just an impromptu get-together with a few folks who chat with each other online, we can't be responsible for getting people to and from the event.

I mean from the station lol(I was playin anyway) and parents? Parent and dont worry about me

edit- and really? come along do I seem like a kid who would get kidnapped? Lol cant nobody afford no ransom. LOl a man said when a burglar robs a place in the hood we got broken shit that we wanna give to em anyway.

edit - and I maybe 16 but Im 6ft 3 but idk how much I weigh lol ppl say anywhere from 180 or 190 to 220-230 so w.e lets go with 200 lol

edit - Honestly yea dont treat me like no kid ppl grow up fast around here what my momz gonna help me with? She proly have to work anyway but I thought nuff people were getting together how many ppl coming anyway.

Michelle

Sorry, but you ARE a kid (well, a teenager, anyhow), and you are underage, no matter how old you look.  We cannot encourage you to drink or do drugs underage, and I would strongly encourage you to tell your mom before meeting anyone from online, including people you chat with on babble.

You were expressing concern about being able to get to and from the place, so that's why I suggested that you ask your mom for help if you feel unsure about it.  You are both welcome to come.  But this is just an impromptu get-together of a few folks who chat online, so everyone is responsible for finding their own way to and from the event, and you should be accompanied by an adult if you feel uncomfortable travelling in the city by yourself, or apprehensive about attending a meet-up with people you have never met before from online.

Michelle

Slumberjack, are you coming to Toronto in November?  Really?

Will you have time to get together and meet a few babblers??

Michelle

So we seem to have a few people coming out - great!  I just called the Old Nick and asked them to set aside the space at the back of the pub for us at 7 tomorrow night.  So when you come in, just come to the back.  If you're unsure, just ask for the babble table. :)

Looks to be the 2nd to the 5th that I'll be in the general vicinity, although the conference I'm attending is about an hour outside Toronto.  I may tack on an extra day to visit relatives close by, so when the travel plans are firm I'll be in touch.  It would be nice though to meet up with a few of ye.

oldgoat

Looks like I'll be there after all. Smile

Michelle

Yay!  Glad to hear it!

Hey everyone, oldgoat's buying!

Cool

remind remind's picture

Well, in the abscence of no mods this morning, wonder how it went? :D

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

Gee, and I was detecting a presence of no mods. Oh, well.

oldgoat

Ah what a grand evening it was.   Great to finally meet Tommy and Rebecca after all these years, and to meet Sineed and R_P.

What sort of turnout did you get, oldgoat?  How many in total?

Michelle

There were 15 people there!  We had a great time.  It was nice to see all the people I'd met before, and really nice to meet Sineed, Arctic_Pig, and Rexdale_Punjabi. :)  Oh, and it was also great to meet Joey Ramone's two guests as well. :)  (We told them they had to start babbling now.  We'll see what happens.)

Oh, by the way, Joey, I think I have your glasses.  At least I think they're yours.  Send me an e-mail (michelle at rabble dot ca) and I'll make arrangements to get them to you.

R_P, check your PM's

Joey Ramone

I don't know whose glasses you have Michelle, but they're not mine.

Michelle

Hmm.  Odd.  Could they belong to one of the people you brought with you, Joey?  We noticed them left behind after you three left.

They have black rims.
