Avatar - Lovers and Haters

As the last thread about this movie demonstrated there are many different opinions regarding this work of art.  (Well my opinion is stated.)
I wonder if a lot of the "controversy" could have been avoided if Jake was played by the Rock [Dwayne Johnson] - because no one seems to know what ethnicity he is (as the creator of Family Guy pointed out).

Would that have prevented the deep probing with flimsy ropes looking for something to claim as racist?

Stupid thread.

This looks a lot like trolling, no?

Stargazer

Lonewolf is FN so I'd like to hear what he has to say.

My point is that there are enough real reasons to make calls of racism.

I've been handcuffed and beaten for absolutely no reason other than the colour of my skin.  I've also been driven to the outskirts of town by police in the winter time.  I've experienced firsthand what racism is.  But I don't hate all cops because of my experiences.  I also think that if someone has seen true racism enough they will not try to find it in a movie like Avatar.  I think such interpretations of racism could have been avoided if the star was someone like the Rock who cannot easily be associate with a specific race.

I think many different nationalities can identify with the N-avi.  To understand the strong connection with nature and the way they hold nature sacred to the point they are willing to die to protect it.

The indigenous people of the rain-forest surely could identify as they are literally murdered for protecting it - so do people from all over the world from every race including Caucasian.  I've heard reports that there were people leaving the theater in tears because they were so moved.

This is a fine example.  If someone is looking for something negative in something such as a movie, a song or even a sentence they will find it whether it was intended or not.  It's all in the interpretation.

I haven't seen Avatar and don't plan to.

That said, I believe I've posted references to rocking anti-racist sites that parse out quite succintly what the race problems are with Avatar.

And that said, no, racism as depicted in any fiction isn't anywhere near what having-the-shit-kicked-out-of-you-by-the-cops racism is.

If racism, or specifically, racist actions, are seen as a continuum, then yes, both depictions in movies/tv as well as physically and sexually violent actions are all forms of racism.

If you all haven't read some of the other threads this morning, lonewolf is suspended for a week. Since he's not able to respond for now, let's try to stay on topic. Thanks.

In my opinion there would have been less of an outcry if as you say Jake was played by someone like the Rock.
