Offensive songs by artists you love 2

From here.

I hope this carries on.  I love music threads.

I love Led Zepplin, and I love 'Dazed and Confused.'

But these lyrics?

Quote:

Been Dazed and Confused for so long it's not true.
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you.
Lots of people talk and few of them know,
soul of a woman was created below.

Get the feeling the song writer (Jake Holms) was coming out of a bad break up?

One of my favourite Zepplin lines is:

"Wayyyyyyyyyy down insiiiiiiiiiiiide...

Womaaaaaaaaaaaan...you neeeeed me."

(Guitar: Twang TWANGGGGGGGG....)

Heh.  But I like mocking it more than anything. :D  I mean, it's so ridiculously egotistical and sexist.  But darn, it's a good song!

I like Led Zeppelin, yet find Robert Plant embarrassing.  The only thing offensive by them is how they ripped off people such as Willie Dixon (Whole Lotta Love), Sonny Boy Williamson (Bring it on Home) and Josh White (In My Time of Dyin' - best Led Zep song of them all).

Yeah yeah. Well she started it:

Quote:
You've heard that old story ever since time began that money is root of all evil
Well let me tell you mine it's much older than time for the root of all evil is a man

Except for the fact that those songs were not likely composed completely or even primarily by the artists you name.  Many of the blues tunes like folk tunes are Traditional songs with a multitude of different verses and choruses.  My hero with that stuff was Utah Philips.  He recorded many songs that people like Roy Rogers claimed as there own work and was willing to go to court and prove that song existed long before the person like Roy who claimed ownership was even born.  I don't think the tunes themselves should belong to any one artist.  Now the actual performance and record of the performance absolutely.

As for bad lyrics I used to like a very long time ago I think Walking After Midnight takes the prize. I loved k.d.'s version in her reincarnation of Patsy phase.  Then I realized that song was written by a man.  I think it defines stalking behaviour.

Quote:

I go out walkin'
After midnight
Out in the moonlight
Just like we used to do
I'm always walkin'
After midnight
searching for you
I walk for miles
Along the highway
Well that's just my way of saying I love you
I'm always walkin'
After midnight

Searching for you

"Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen.

It's anti-American.

One song that bugs me is that "I love you, you love me" number by that big purple dinosaur, whose name I thankfully forgot.

Just of top o' my head, Neil Young's Alabama. Apparently Southerners were very offended.

Oh Alabama.
Can I see you
and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land
I come to you
and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
to help you along
What's going wrong?

Sineed

"I heard Mr. Young sing about her,

I heard old Neil put her down.

I hope Neil Young will remember,

The southern man don't need him around anyhow...

Sweet Home Alabama....."

It was written by two men, but written to be sung by a woman - Kay Starr and then, of course, Patsy Cline.  In any event, I don't think it's about stalking.  I think it's about being lovesick and heartbroken.  I realize there can be a fine line between the two, but in the context of the song, I think it's pretty obvious which side of the fence it falls on.  I think the song could even be about heartsickness at the death of a lover.

I used to really like Glam Rock. When I was 17 I first heard of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. This probably takes the cake for both poorly written AND offensive lyrics:

As for what I actually do love:

Pulp - Babies

Quote:

Well I guess it couldn't last too long.
I came home one day,
and all her things were gone,
I fell asleep inside.
I never heard her come.
And then she opened up her wardrobe,
and I had to get it on.
Oh, listen
we were on the bed when you came home,
I heard you stop outside the door.
I know you won't believe it's true,
I only went with her 'cos she looks like you.
Oh, I want to take you home.
I want to give you children.
You might be my girlfriend, yeah.

Pulp - Pencil Skirt

Quote:
You can tell some lies
About the good times that you've had
But I've kissed your mother twice
And now I'm working on your dad ...

I'll be around when he's not in town,
I'll show you how you're doing it wrong,
I really love it when you tell me to stop.
Oh it's turning me on.

I only come here cause I know it makes you sad.
I only do it cause I know you know it's bad.
Oh yes I know,
that it's ugly and it shouldn't be like that.
Oh but oh it's turning me on

Anoher kind of anomaly, songs I like but when played one after the other I don't like them as much.

'tom's dinner' - susan vega

'telephone' - primitive radio gods

'walk on the wild side' - lou reed

PraetorianFour

I'm not sure if this counts.

I love beyonce as a singer. She seems to have a lot of spirit and stikes me as a powerful woman with confidence.

I just watched the latest video she made with lady Gaga [ telephone] and I wanted to hit myself with a frying pan.  I can't believe she was a part of that whole debacle.  Watch the "telephone" video on youtube and you'll see what I mean.

I think Neil Young may well have been trying to offend some people with lyrics to, Keep on Rockin in the Free World.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world ...

Offending people isn't good business.  Making music that that justifies the angst people are feeling on the other hand is good business.

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

More violence against women.

Quote:
Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand

Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand

I'm going down to shoot my old lady
You know, I've caught her messin' around with another man

that a  cover isn't it?

he also sang:

"Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey

Look at the sky turn a hell fire red
Somebody's house is burnin' down down, down down
Down, down, down."

more violence....this time against houses! Tongue out

Oh some of us tend to feel little angst or remorse in general. Personally speaking, I wasn't offended by the tune and thought it appropriate at the time. Neil Young rocks.

Anyone reading this thread wouldn't be far off in thinking that some people could be offended by the rhythm of the falling rain.

Slumberjack

"Right Round"

You spin my head right round, right round
When you go down, when you go down down"

From the top of the pole I watch her go [down]
She got me throwin my money a[round]
Ain't nothin more beautiful to be [found]
It's goin down down.

Wang Dang Sweet Poontang - Nugent? I used to think the Michigander and rocker was it when I was young. Not anymore since I realized he's an asshole deluxe rightwinger. I can't believe I actually went to see him play at Castle Farms. I wouldn't do it again. You suck, Ted!

I would rather be Singing In the Rain than be offended by the rhythm of the falling rain, but I would be offended to see in person dancing in the rain ala Clockwork Orange.

I nominate the following as either the most offensive song or the new pep rally tune for NATO troops.

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
with the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
forward into battle see his banners go!

Fidel

Ya warmongering plutocrats go way back. If Jesus hadn't personally endorsed the Middle East crusades and opening of Latin America's veins, we can bet that Miroslav Satan and the Pittsbergeoise Pengawins would have in the end.

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(woo woo, woo woo)

Jingles

[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwdFwZPNUfw]standing[/url] at your door

just like I've done before

You've changed

So Strange

You're all grown up

You wear those heals and hose

dressed up in your Mama's clothes

You're hip

I'm flipped

You're all grown up

When I'm-a talking to ya

All the time

Makes me glad all over honey

So glad your mine

When you feel my touch

I'm-a lovin' you too much

You're right

So nice

You're all grown up

yikes.
