Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning——

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

The Great Gatsby (1925), F. Scott Fitzgerald

If anyone is interested in perusing babble's archives pre-upgrade, they are available in read-only format at http://archive.rabble.ca/

The page is not searchable or googleable yet, but it hopefully will be soon. Still, a nice resource to have for those with a taste for nostalgia!

BTW, folks, the way you can follow links on the old babble is by pasting the old link into your browser (don't just click on the link or you'll be redirected to a new url that doesn't work), and then replacing "www.rabble.ca" with "archive.rabble.ca" (no www).

Awesome... and painful until it becomes searchable!

Maybe there could be a permanent link somewhere on the forum to this archive.

I've stickied this thread so that it's always available on this forum at least--I just found out about it today, but that's not a bad idea. I'll see what we can do.

Groovy. Offhand, does anyone remember where the threads written on 9/11 and the days succeeding are, or the threads written as the invasion of Afghanistan (7 October) began?

jas

This is awesome. Thanks, whoever.

M. Spector will be happy, too.

Skdadl, these three threads were the ones most 'live' on the event:

http://archive.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=26&t=000007

http://archive.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=26&t=000008

http://archive.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=26&t=000009

I also copied and pasted the content from these way back before Babble shifted over, as I find them, in themselves, fascinating historical documents.

Now, let me see if I can find the first ever Babble 9/11 doubters thread... :)

skdadl

Thanks, jas -- good thinking!  :)

Yay, they're public now!  Pretty awesome. :)

Hey, thanks for the tip, Michelle. I've added that to the OP.

Yay!  Looking back on the flamewars of old!

You know what I find interesting?  Michelle is the only name I recognize on that 9/11 thread.

I wonder - do babblers have a shelf life?  It would be interesting to look at any statistics on the ebbs and flows of babble, turnover rates, number of active posters, etc over time.  I wonder if there is an average lifespan for a babbler.  Personally, I found that I have been drifting away from babble for a while.  Although that may also be because my experience with babble hasn't always been positive and has actually often been negative.

The slip-shod 9/11 Commission Report concluded that discovering who financed 9/11 terror is unimportant.

There was a bag man, and he was at a breakfast meeting on Capitol Hill on 9/11/01 with Senator Bob Graham and Rep. Porter Goss, two chairmen of the Senate and House Intelligence committees.

Google works quite well now for searching the archives. Just enter the following into the Google search box:

site:archive.rabble.ca/babble

following by a word space and then whatever search terms you like.

Thanks to bagkitty for suggesting that I post this.
