Cueball cross Canada tour

Hi. I will be on the western swing of my cross Canada tour for the next couple of weeks, and dropping in at a few places.

Fidel

Thanks for the warning. It should give them time to nail some boards over windows, stack some sand bags etc. Yust kiddin' he he

Jacob Richter

Could you please PM me your Western itinerary?

Jingles

You going through Edmonton?

6079_Smith_W

You may know about Turning the Tide bookstore in Saskatoon. A good place to drop in if you come through.

If you're on southern Vancouver Island then give me a shout. We can save a few ALES. lol.

Farmpunk

Doing a fundraising tour for Bucky Haight?  And why the fuck is this in National News?  Is Cueball that well known?

Maysie Maysie's picture

Moving to Out and About. Have a great trip Cueball.

KenS

Ontario to the West consitutes "cross Canada tour"?

Hmph.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

*sigh* no one ever visits the Lower North Shore. Not the best time, anyway - the blackflies are bad right now.

KenS

and then its winter again

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Yup.Frown

KenS

One summer I went up the Alaska Highway to visit some friends who had moved to the Yukon. The rain and mud on the way was miserable [dirt road back then], but the sun was out for a day before I got to my friends.

When I got there was the first time I had sat still. And the mosquitos just blew my mind.

"Oh yeah, we get most of our annual precipitation in the summer."

Nine months of winter, and then this as your reward?!

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Actually, here we consider six months of winter to be our well-deserved reward for enduring six months of blackflies. Wink

Maysie Maysie's picture

Hey KenS and Boom Boom, please don't get part time jobs working for the tourism industry. I'm getting itchy, and cold, just reading your posts.

Laughing

I'm going west too, in August. And maybe to Montreal at some point. But I won't drift Cueball's thread anymore.

That infamous maybe.

al-Qa'bong

Look me up when you hit Saskatoon, Cueb.  I live just down the road from the Merry Mansion (Turning the Tide Bookstore).

Stopped off in Sudbury, on the way to Winnipeg where we are now. Got some divergent views on the strike. Mostly from people not directly involved. Most people seemed generally suportive of the strikers. Most interestingly I ran into a former management guy for Vale. He told me that Vale dumped about half the management staff when they purchased Inco.

Got some other informed commentary from a local activist who has been in touch with the situation, and along with the others I talked to there seemed to be some criticism of how the strike was intitiated and handled. Perhaps the union was not prepared for the knock down drag out struggle they are having with Vale.

I was told that despite Scab labour, the mine is not functioning at 100% capacity and that the rumour is a bad chemical process ended up with 50,000 tons of Nickel going to waste at some point.

On the whole people were supportive, with many "Sudbury Supports our Working Families" signs in many businesses. Seems like most everyone is on-side with the Steelworkers on this one.

In Winnipeg today and for tomorrow, heading to Saskatoon later monday. Be there Tuesday.

Cheers everyone, will try to drop by and meet those who want to as we go.

Farmpunk

Infamous suits you better.

You've already topped most the news pieces on rabble.  Send me your address and I've donate $50 to you instead.

Ripple

wow!  The Townhouse!  Thanks for that.  Makes me almost miss it!

Cueball Cueball's picture

Yeah. Townhouse. Berni Desjardin's joint. A must see landmark. Went to the Smiling Budha too.

Hmph.

We went that way last summer, this is a continuation of the that tour, and we need to pick up on some missed dates out west. The promoters were really unhappy that we had to skip some dates, what with the baby being born and so on.

Cueball Cueball's picture

All the way to Edmonton now. Had some interesting times in Winnipeg and Saskatoon.

The further we get from Toronto the less G20 seems to make any sense to anyone. Or perhaps better to say, that there is less interest in it overall. Most telling was a brief bus stop in Battleford where a guy from Slave Lake asked me point blank: "What is G20?" After my explanation he then went on to say that he thought Harper's billion dollars would have been better spent cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico. I couldn't disagree of course.

In Saskatoon we managed to hang out with long term Babble friend Al Qabong. Very cool to meet him face to face for the first time. We had dinner at Amigo's and we got to visit Mr. Bong's home where we had a pleasant chat about Babble past and present.

We had a great time.

I will update later with some photos from around

al-Qa'bong

Yeah, that was fun; sitting around sipping beer, talking about the class struggle, hockey, lightning, breast feeding, Palestine and John Entwistle...

Regarding some of our conversation...

"Amal Saad-Ghorayeb is an expert on Hezbollah and her book on the Lebanese party has been widely praised and cited. She taught political science at Lebanese American University in Beirut. Currently, she is a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Middle East Center in Beirut. "

I''ll be filling in for another host tomorrow, and will be airing a talk by Jack Shaheen, author of Reel Bad Arabs at 8:30 CST.

Cue if you want to visit me, don't come to Fernie. I'm living in Vancouver now.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Hey! That would be cool. I'll be there for a while so we will get together for sure.

skdadl

What?!? You're skipping Medicine Hat?!? Cue, there was a time ... (Mind you, I was only eleven at most at the time ...)

Hugs, and happy wanderings.

Jacob Richter

I'll be waiting!

remind remind's picture

you here yet?

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

I will be over on the mainland next week. Maybe a Cueball inspired babble get-together? or a few ales.

Cueball Cueball's picture

That sounds good. I am here now, and I would love to meet with people seperately or as a group. An inspired get together sounds great. I am just resting up at my families place here in the lower mainland and will be out and about soon.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Ok, so anyone want to go out for a drink, at some place, at some time, this week somewhere here in Vancouver?

We will likely have our baby.

remind remind's picture

Sorry, not there this week now. Or would have loved to.

You will have to stop here on the way back. ;)

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

yea, i'm in.

Jacob Richter

Hope to see you soon!

"We will likely have our baby."

Eh?  Other than congrats on the baby, that comes as a bit of a surprise.

Slumberjack

Is there an eastern swing being planned?

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Let's do this thing.

Caissa

Are you channeling Gary Gilmore, Catchfire?

CMOT Dibbler

I don't drink.  I also find this city a bit intimidating(I officially moved in April)  Could we get together at my place of residence?

Cueball Cueball's picture

Of course CMOT. I would love too.

CMOT Dibbler

Oh balls! Part of me says "great!  I get to meet Cue and here his activist war stories and geek out!"  and then I think "gosh!  I don't know Cue from Adam and if I give  my adress to him he might give it to people who are less then trustworthy, who would then rob my apartment.

I'm sorry, I know I'm being silly,  but I've never done this before.  There's an organic cofee place at the entrance of Vancouver Island. The tenants here call it Pedro's, although I'm not sure whether that's still it's name.  Could we meet there?  It's about 20 minutes from the group home where I live.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Hey. That sounds great. Whereever. I can get down to Granville Island very easily, and I am basically free except for Friday night, so why not just PM me a time and a place and we can meet there, tomorrow afternoon. I don't know about activist war stories. I am actually pretty boring, in real life.

CMOT Dibbler

How long are ya staying?

Cueball Cueball's picture

Til the begining of August.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

Let me know when you're back and what I can do!

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

CMOT, N.Beltov, and Cue, along with Cue Jr. and Mrs. Cue met today at Granville Island. Woo hoo

Cueball Cueball's picture

Yes we did! it was a great time. One more example of how Babblers are from uniform. Indeed with each new Babbler I meet I am struck by the diversity of Babblers. Very interesting talking to people in a more social context. The board gets dry sometimes.

I will be going to the Saturday demo for civil liberities at 1:00 pm at the Downtown Vancouver Library. Anyone wants to meet up before and go, let me know.

CMOT Dibbler

I swear man, next time I'll do better.:(

There was so much that didn't get covered and my charm just seemed to evaporate.  You weren't too offended right?

CMOT Dibbler

Give the kid a big hug from me.:)

Cueball Cueball's picture

We had a great time. There is only so much that can be covered in so much time. I wish we hadn`t been late

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

I met another friend from the ANC later in the day. I hadn't seen him in 20+ years. Friendship born in struggle, if it's genuine to begin with, is friendship for life. The Babblers i met today, for the first time, were much the same.
