Did anyone else in Toronto feel that tremor 5 minutes ago!?
Did the earth move for you too, honey?
Yup. We just had an earthquake. I was 5 floors up and it was a bit dramatic.
Felt it pretty strong in Ottawa too.
Damned terrierists! What will they do next?
Felt from Kitchener to Ottawa I've heard.
That's what happens in the Centre of the Universe (tm).
Was it strong enough to create new, verifiable, information on the physics of building collapse?
Yes -- I just posted the question at BnR too. Oshawegia had a good little shake there. Kittehs spooked.
Ha! I've heard as far away as Syracuse that they felt it too!
Well when the earth moves...
rr just told me his whole building was evacuated at work. And apparently people who live on high storeys felt it way worse than those of us close to the ground.
Sounds like Ottawa was hit bad, too.
Gotta love social media, huh?? Facebook and Twitter are going nuts.
Crap and here I was sitting at my computer and didnt even notice
This is actually the first earthquake I've ever felt, I think. I usually miss them too!
Guess your building is solid!
Well my home office appears to be solid then ;o)
5.5
Ah, that's nothing compared to what we're expecting any time now in Vancouver.
It's a good thing Babble had the good sense to place a Moderator on the Left Coast. Could you imagine if an earthquake knocked all of the Centre of the Universe moderators out of action.
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around
Is this what they mean by Diversity of Tactics?
This is the biggest one I've felt and heard since Nov (I think) 1988 - that one was 5.7 centred in Saguenay. When I try to look it up on the , I get this message:
The remote host or network may be down.
Why does that seem funny?
Just more of Harper's cutbacks.
Then there was the smell of heather crushed and the roughness of the bent stalks under her head and the sun bright on her closed eyes and all his life he would remember the curve of her throat with her head pushed back into the heather roots and her lips that moved smally and by themselves and the fluttering of the lashes on the eyes tight closed against the sun and against everything and for her everything was red, orange, gold-red from the sun on the closed eyes, and it all was that color, all of it, the filling, the possessing, the having, all of that color, all in a blindness of that color. For him it was a dark passage which led to nowhere, then to nowhere, then again to nowhere, once again to nowhere, always and forever to nowhere, heavy on the elbows in the earth to nowhere, dark, never any end to nowhere, hung on all time always to unknowing nowhere, this time and again for always to now beyond all bearing up, up, up, and into nowhere, suddenly, scaldingly, holdingly all nowhere gone and time absolutely still and they were both there, time having stopped and he felt the earth move out and away from under them.--Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1941)
And she said, "Geez, those stupid stalks poking into my neck are annoying! Are you done yet?"
Not bad. Try the balloon scene in Balthazar and Bluminda by the late Jose Saramago, or the scene in Kafka's The Castle involving the barmaid and "K" the Land Surveyor for more, and briefer, earthly delights.
Just more of Harper's cutbacks.
You're so cynical. The Harper government believes in science and in maximizing information to the public, especially in times of potential disaster like these. Just have a look at the level of detail provided so soon after this earthquake:

And she said, "Geez, those stupid stalks poking into my neck are annoying! Are you done yet?"
Pfft. This is a Hemingway novel. There are no shes.
It's a shame that Ernest lived too early to qualify for this award.
Secretly, I do admire Ernest. I read him, and it was good. I read him, and it was bad. But when it was bad, it was good. I stared into space. In the space, there was truth. The old man was there. The old woman was there. There they were. And we knew.
OOPS!.....Excuse me.
My etes are blurry right now from my appointment with the opthamalogist so I may not be reading correctly, but I think the Mope and Wail article said the quake was caused by those swingin' Senators in Ottawa having a party to celebrate the end of the session
quote:
On Parliament Hill, where the Commons has adjourned for the summer but the Senate was still in session, Senators felt the Red Chamber shake. Glass windows made a crunching noise, and ornate chandeliers swung.
hah, maybe just a pre-warning to the worlds leaders?
In my dreams, it could be so....
At first I thought it was a bomb - I was 5 floors up, and it was pretty dramatic.
Here's the webpage for this particular quake - it's downgraded to a 5.0, but still pretty impressive for around here:

A tremor woke me up in Ottawa a number of years ago. It was about sun rise, and I was sleeping in a water bed, Thought it was a dump truck or something out on the street. Didn't dawn on me that it was too early for that kind of thing until someone said later it was a tremor.
I was almost knocked off my couch by the loudest bang I've ever heard - turned out it was the construction crew blasting rock for gravel not far from where I live. I suspect I have a crack in the basement wall as a result, but will have to ig it out on the outside, not a job I want to do, and, besides, it happened almos a year ago.
BTW Michelle, love the thread title, was so not expecting it to be about an earthquake back east.
Perhaps regular Torontonians should leave the city for their own safety?
The resulting tsunami washed the Adirondack chairs off the deck beside the fake lake.
It happened on the border of Quebec and Ontario. I heard it was just Quebec trying to separate again.

LMAO
P.S. They're Muskoka chairs, silly.

There's always next time.

They may be Muskoka chairs to you, but they were put there by Harper. Odds are that they are Adirondack chairs.
Refuge, my uncle posted that as his FB update. :D

Otherwise known as "Central Canada." Mme. Qa'bong (an immigrant) asked me about this yesterday, after hearing reports of the earth tremor. I had to explain that "Central Canada" is a political, not a geographical, area.

Ya, I "borrowed" it from FB too, guess it gets around! 7 Degrees of facebook.
I didn't really feel it much since I was outside at the time and I was looking through a fence at a construction site, I thought it was unusual because the fence seemed to move while I was looking though it, so I put my hand up to hold the fence. To my surprise, it was a rock solid fence, not a flimsy floopy one and at the time thought nothing of it.
Only when I got home and my wife told me about the earthquake did I recall the fence moving and put two and two together, shocking and scary.
Daniel .. Toronto
o o
Hey now!
Meh, some wag claimed it was just Rob Ford bumping into Mike Duffy in the courthouse.
