Credit Unions

Does anyone know any credit unions in Montreal ? My feminist collective will be needing a bank account ....

Don't we call them caisses populaires, connected with the Mouvement Desjardins? They're all over the place. Just pick one near you.

Mind you, I've seen "independent" credit unions, connected with employees in large workplaces (e.g. there used to be one for the Pointe-St-Charles shops, and I think Bell, etc.).

The caisse populaires desjardins, but I was wondering if there were others as well.

I don't really think so, PRD. Credit unions (in NA at least) started out here in Québec as caisses pops, founded by Alphonse Desjardins, and unless I'm drastically wrong, they're all we've got. I read somewhere that they represent a bigger chunk of the consumer financial sector than anywhere in Canada (or North America).

I just checked on your comment. I had no idea one third of all Canadians use credit unions:

From what I can see, you're right about Quebec having the highest percentage of members (which surprises me a bit, being in Saskatchewan. where almost half the population uses them).

And I recognise the Desjardins name from caisses populaire in Manitoba as well.

I'm surprised at that statistic as well, 6079. Here's a 10-year-old survey on the federal department of finance website which confirms what you're saying, and then some:

Quote:
Canada has the world's highest per capita membership in the credit union movement, currently with some 10 million members or about 33 per cent of the population.

It also says credit unions and caisses pops had 40% of the market share in Québec and Saskatchewan, 20% in B.C., and presumably less elsewhere.

I wonder what's changed over the past decade.

Anyway, we're far from PRD's quest for a banking institution, but it's interesting.

I guess it will be desjardins then. Thanks !

Great stuff, PRD - you've just upped our percentage a bit! Good luck with managing your collective's assets successfully. And please drop by here a bit more often!
