Why do you think that about three-quarters of the people who voted for Miller in 2006 don't want to vote for his handpicked successor?

Maybe they fell for the trap that the Toronto Star set out for them by believing Smitherman was the man to beat and somehow on their team and "less bad" than Ford or John Tory?

Just this year, we've seen evidence that people can get around the media and that polls can change dramatically in places like Calgary, Winnipeg, and Ottawa. Apparently Toronto hasn't got the message. Too bad, you will get what you vote for.

With a little push from a couple of NDP councillors who made timely annoucements in support of Smitherman around the time that Joey needed to get momentum going.

[quibble]Were these councillors verifiably NDP members or supporters? Or were they just "progressive?" I think that is a relevant distinction. Other than that, it still sounds like Pantalone was kneecapped either way[/quibble]

Two NDP members who are councillors, and one non-NDP member who is considered progressive, but no in the NDP. The last one followed the other two by a week, and was not unexpected.

Not to interrupt the Pantalone argument or anything, but hey - what about those non-mayoral council races?  NOW magazine has endorsements today, and Eye has some half-assed commentary as well.

Another drop out in Ward 32 endorses 3M:

A Toronto lawyer dropped out of the Ward 32 council seat race on Thursday and announced that he is endorsing a leading opponent of long-term incumbent Sandra Bussin.

Neil Sinclair announced he is endorsing community activist Mary-Margaret McMahon, who is running for the Beaches-East York seat on Toronto City Council.

In a message posted on his website, Sinclair called McMahon "a front-runner" who has earned his trust and respect.

He had previously endorsed Rossi for mayor, and has said Toronto can't be run from a "socialist framework."

Cueball meets eight-ball. Is there a theme emerging?

Pantalone is the handpicked successor of a man who won 63% of the vote in the last municipal election.

Miller has endorsed Pantalone but I haven't seen any evidence that he's the "hand-picked" successor. It looked to me like Adam G was the one who "got the nod". On this I agree with Stockholm - it was bad judgement on Adam's part and on the part of those who pushed him to run. Did that include Miller? I always thought so.
