More Wikileaks released!
Papal Bull

My Pavlovian response is tingling and I pretty much need a bib.

So much fun shall be had this weekend.

KenS

I'm hoping there is something from the US embassy in Ottawa about Omar Kadr. Documentation of Canadian government(s) saying  "dont bother us about him". Or worse. More material for suing their asses.

Not to mention lots of possibilities of expressions of desire to do boot licking pennance by going into Afghanistan.

Fidel

Quote:
Among the countries whose politicians feature in the reports are Russia, Afghanistan and former Soviet republics in Central Asia.

They're still mad that the Russkies are just as corrupt as they are. The Yukos and Sakhalin Island deals involving western energy companies in the early nineties were almost as bent as are the Iraqi oil deals today.

It's looking like Wikileaks is just a PR tool for colder war hawks and the western world corporate agenda. There is all kinds of stuff they could be leaking about deep seated corruption in US Government and 9/11 they should be leaking and are choosing not to.

Fidel, that is the viewpoint being pitched here by Terrence Moonseed:

They can only leak what they get.

I think it amounts to a lot of, Oh war is hell and war is terrible and look what our guys did to those people. It's fluff. Conservative and "liberal" minded people will look at that stuff and then convince themselves that spreading democracy surely is a tough job. Our soldiers are sacrificing their lives and mental health so that private enterprise can carry on their good work in desperately poor countries and are still piss-poor hellholes since the 1950s through the nineties when we waged dirty war on communism and democracy in general. Thank God we're free ad nauseum.

milo204

i think these leaks are important.  It's evidence of us crimes, operating procedures, civilian deaths, and the way the military operates when it thinks no one is looking.  sure, it is from a military perspective, but when compared to what they release to the media and the public it makes for some interesting comparisons.

the problem is the way people read it and analyze it, like the "evidence" or iranian involvement in iraq the last release.

Papal Bull

Awesome post, Milo!

The leaks aren't going to be smoking gun documents or crown jewels, for the most part. I'm sure a few diamonds of desperate terror will bubble to the surface, but for the most part this will be like reading a teenager's diary or journal. Full of soul-searching complaints, bizarre stances, baseless accusations and wondering who is developing a crush on America or perhaps who America thinks would be its enemies.

I'm sure there will also be bad poetry and strange line drawings, if my teenage journal/diary is at all an indicator of the Wikileaks.

Fidel

There are many Canadians who are okay with the crimes and think it's worth it though. Some dude at my local blog at home even commented that the Americanos have helped Afghans locate valuable mineral deposits in their own country even and therefore we have economic interests in Afghanistan now. We can't pull out, he says, because of the potential booty. I told him that he won't see a dime's worth of that mineral wealth himself and rolled my eyes 720 degrees backwards in disbelief. This kind of tremendous stupidity crept north of the border some time ago apparently.

President Barack Obama's administration will particularly feel the heat as many of the documents to be published relate to the time since he took office. Experts say there could even be cables related to the government's maneuverings to get allies accept Guantanamo detainees as Obama was pressing ahead with the deadline to close the infamous detention camp.

I don't know what to think. But there are replacements for the Obamacrats waiting in the wings. And the other war party is raring to go for four more wars as usual. The billionaire oligarchy are funding both parties. US and FPTP style elections in general are a game for the rich to play at. The old back and forth down there just never ends.

Have these kinds of crimes committed on the other side of the world not occurred before? Americans are a forgiving lot. When they grow tired of war party number one, they elect the other guys. Their voter turnouts are even worse than ours on average.

I like the 9/11 truth movement myself. Truthers have implicated politicians in both of the warmongering elephant and donkey parties. And they are winning over people around the world who are skeptical of the official lies as well as many Americans who vote traditionally for either of the big money parties. Yes, I like it a lot.

Here are some other things to keep your eyes on:

Antiwar candidates Ron Paul, Rand Paul and Dennis Kucinich.

The Tea Party making the connection between big government spending, the wars and the U.S.A.'s over $1 Trillion debts and deficits.

A switch in political polarity of the Democratic Party - traditionally anti-interventionist and antiwar during the Cold War (except during the Clinton administration and the U.S.A.'s involvement in the Kosovo War) and now that a Democrat (Obama) is in the White House.

More importantly, a switch in political polarity of the Republican Party (John McCain and Sarah Palin aside) to the "Old Republican Party" the anti-interventionist, antiwar party of the 1940s, the party that has its traditions in George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

Oh sure. A new broom sweeps clean as they say. New faces always have the appearance of incoming change. But nothing really ever changes.

They signed the National Security Act in 1947. Since then the shadow government of NSA, NSC, Wall Street and Pentagon capitalists have been running the show behind the scenes. That 'sonofabitch' Kennedy found that out after firing Allan Dulles head of the CIA, which is part of the corporate-military dictatorship.

Americans are allowed to vote for cosmetic government though for appearance sake. And even both of those parties are owned by the superrich now. There was a war on democracy and Americans lost. Canada? We're just America's ball cap and America's gas tank. It's all a big joke.

Not surprisingly the US is responding to fact that they have been spying on countries through embassies, using their foreign offices to promote corporate interests, shit-talking world leaders, spying on the UN, trying to get a war going with Iran, and other corruption by...going after the whistleblowers!!!

And this just in: Canada supports the US assholery.

And this should surprise anyone?

The U.S. and Israel can never do any wrong.....This is why Canada has adopted the EXACT same foreign and domestic policies as Ronnie Raygun and both the Bushes administrations.

Frankly,I don't give a shit what Lawrence Cannon thinks....Ultimately,it will be Canadians that will draw their own conclusions.

Buddy Kat

I don’t think the wiki leaks is a cia disinformation campaign and this is why…..The reaction the US has shown over someone exposing them was the biggest addmission of guilt and , talk about panic ! After all why would you worry if you have nothing to hide.

It would be safe to say , seeing as no “top secret” info was released that the US is probably responsible for funding terror thru out the world and guilty of many despicable acts …some even exposed by wiki leaks ..like the gunning down of reporters and the comments made during said gunning. Exposing US military as sadistic killers bent on hate. Or the exposing of the cia's "red cell" Probably one of millions of examples.

Like everything else it rolls down hill, and is probably the reason why terror groups are started in the first place. The US isn’t any better than the worst country you can contrive. The sooner Americans realize this the sooner they can have their civil war and start making guillotines.

With all the sabotaging of Iran nuke facility’s and the blowing up of scientists in the news today …It’s a no brainer who Iran should be dealing with ASAP....prey or become prey Iran!

No, I don't think it's some super-secret CIA disinformation conspiracy, but, I have to say, that despite all of the obvious embarrassment, there's nothing I've seen yet that actually paints the U.S. in a bad light.  Rather, the U.S. comes across looking pretty good compared to, say, Iran's neighbours who are clamouring for war.

Every country's diplomatic corps is going to be sending back the same kind of information - they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't providing frank assessments of world leaders and foreign governments and reporting any information they come across.  So the "scandal" is kind of a non-issue until something major crops up in one of these documents . . . though likely all the good stuff is in the top secret cables Wikileaks doesn't have access to.

Ummmm, the only problem I see with this position is that what would we be confused  and misinformed about? It portrays them as what they are.

You can download the cables that were released yesterday via bittorrent.   The file that I found was about 10 MB  so should download quickly.   I've looked at some of the stuff and actually alot of it is quite dry and boring.    With so much stuff being leaked, you've got to do alot of reading to find the "juicy bits".

So my advice?   Read the cables yourself.

On WikiLeaks: You Force Me to Repeat Myself  - by Arthur Silber

http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2010/11/on-wikileaks-you-force-me-t...

"As I've been writing this entry, I was struck by one critical issue still another time. The return of this argument--and of singular importance, the implied continuing reliance on authority - demonstrates to me again the extent to which virtually all of us are trained to rely on authority and to obey.

The hardest battle most of us will ever fight is to escape the effects of this training. That too is a central theme in my WikiLeaks articles.."

Chomsky puts that spin in context.

The Spin:

Quote:

Israel says WikiLeaks vindicates its Iran focus
Mon, Nov 29 2010

By Allyn Fisher-Ilan

TEL AVIV | Mon Nov 29, 2010 9:18am EST

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday leaked U.S. diplomatic cables had exposed widespread Arab fear of Iran's nuclear program and vindicated his priorities in peacemaking.
....
"For the first time in modern history, there is a not inconsequential agreement in Europe and in the region - in Israel and countries in the region - that the main threat stems from Iran, its expansion plans and its weaponisation steps," Netanyahu said in a speech to newspaper editors....

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6AS1K420101129

The Context:

Quote:
NOAM CHOMSKY: That essentially reinforces what I said before, that the main significance of the cables that are being released so far is what they tell us about Western leadership. So Hillary Clinton and Benjamin Netanyahu surely know of the careful polls of Arab public opinion. The Brookings Institute just a few months ago released extensive polls of what Arabs think about Iran. The results are rather striking. They show the Arab opinion holds that the major threat in the region is Israel- that’s 80. The second major threat is the United States- that’s 77. Iran is listed as a threat by 10%.
With regard to nuclear weapons, rather remarkably, a majority- in fact, 57–say that the region would have a positive effect in the region if Iran had nuclear weapons....

But there is not a word about it anywhere. What that reveals is the profound hatred for democracy on the part of our political leadership and the Israeli political leadership. These things aren’t even to be mentioned. This seeps its way all through the diplomatic service. The cables to not have any indication of that.
....
When they talk about Arabs, they mean the Arab dictators, not the population, which is overwhelmingly opposed to the conclusions that the analysts here- Clinton and the media- have drawn.

Mr. Giraldi is certainly candid and honest. Really, it's almost entertaining!  And he seems to be intelligent too. This would explain why he is no longer involved in the US intelligence network.

Wikileaks has opened yet another window into the villainy and malevolence of those in power and authority over us. The central question now becomes will we respond and begin to collectively address this fact or continue to sit and watch things worsen like inert jelly. Do you think there will be any significant support for Bradley Manning or Assange or anyone else fighting against the international order? I very much doubt it. In Canada in any case, the passivity seems to be terminal. The NDP's pro-NATO position while simultaneously claiming to be 'anti-war' is only one of the more ridiculous contradictions some Canadian 'progressives' seem prepared to continue to inhabit. The results are obvious. Our continuing and growing collaboration with the criminal rule of the  US imperium.
