BC NDP - New Logo - New Branding

At the weekends provincial council meeting, the NDP also approved a new look logo and branding. Thoughts?

Little i is aimed at the voters, (Pions) and explaining that they are not important.

a real logo would have a capital I and it would be a bit larger.

It means they are using something like my pecking order theory (But not the way I want them to use it)

I would use the capital I to make the peons proud to belong (as equals) not as voting booth fodder.

Pull them up out of servility not reinforce it.

Evening Star

How do you get that out of a lowercase "i"??

Brian White

I get insulted. A lower case I is concidered a put down.

Thats what the teachers told me.

Maybe the ndp wordprocessor is broken.

They are supposed to correct mistakes like that.

If the brain thrust release that logo, a lot of people will be pist off.

(Stockholm and remind will probably disagree)

No doubt this is the reason the ipod and iphone never really took off.

Brian White

The pecking order theory, people just keep proving it!

Here is the difference explained  http://hubpages.com/hub/Lazy-Keyboards-Upper-Case-and-Lower-Case

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imaginary_unit

Yes indeed, the ndp could be using i in its mathematical sense.

Logo's are important and the brain trust prove that stamping out dissent is complete.

Everybody was too scared to tell them that their logo was stupid and contained a basic error.

What makes you think this is a new logo and new branding, or that it was approved at Council? Were you there? This was on the delegate badges at Council, therefore its use was approved by someone before Council. I think that it is ludicrous to think that it is a new logo or new branding, regardless of what people think of it. On the other hand, I thought the priority list of resolutions at the last Federal NDP Convention was pretty ludicrious too.

E.P.Houle

After Carol's purge of the live parts of the party,  should it not be called the ODP, Old Democratic Party? I'm concerned about the lack of a youth movement and the correct logo would be" i r ~ odp" or " i r vote".  There are a lot of hungry people out there. Ask Simpson in the Peace region, ask in East Van, ask any twenty something looking for a future or a job.  " i am" is so yesterday, as useful as an empty gun. I'm' old, I have always voted NDP but I can make exceptions. There is a lot of anger out  there and a lot of groups to connect to but this is a thread about a bad logo. Maybe Carol could read Naomi Kline? Isn't this time the Crisis, the time to regain the social contract from the failure of Milton Friedman? Carol is a whip, not a leader; where is  Chavez when ya need him? Logo-gate already blew up in her face at the convention and now she thinks she should do it again? She needs better friends and lots of them.

From the Facebook launch page on Sunday:

Quote:
Great I AM NDP campaign launch at the Victoria Provincial Council meeting. Lots of activists headed back home to launch the campaign in their constituencies.

And from the Vancouver Sun:

Quote:
NDP launches new look. One thing lost from this weekend's meeting of the NDP provincial council was any notice of the party's new branding. The party used the meeting to launch its"i am NDP" logo.

I guess that fact that it is a rip-off of a Molson beer ad had not been lost on anyone.

NorthReport

What's wrong with Molsons. Oh that's right, it's not Kokanee Glacier beer. Tongue out

Brian White

Well, I wish it was a joke.

Cueball Cueball's picture

No problem with the rip, but you could expand on it with some rant ads about what it means to be NDP. Debating the content of that should keep caucus out of everyones hair until well after the election results are counted.

genstrike

Totally a ripoff of "I am CFS"

Except with improper capitalization, and also being less coherent if it's targeted at people who aren't NDP members.

I wonder if it was a hackish student union bureaucrat brought up to the NDP from the CFS farm team who came up with this rehashing of old CFS slogans?

Brian White

Who approved it?

I am not even a party member I cannot spell for shit and I (sorry i) am still embarrased!

(Yes, I checked embarrased on the net for the correct spelling.)

Now, logos are normally test marketed before they are released in the wild.

Who approved THAT?

We are ndp would have been better, I am sure.

I cannot blame the mainstream media if they rip you to shreds on this.

No wonder there were 13 mls's who did not wear the yellow scarfs.

If there were badges, I bet a lot were crushed on the ground at the meeting.

It is pathetic.

Brian White

And this from a chair of a schools board! And we were blaming Campbell for the reduction in standard.

Well, i wonder if education is going to be a priority for them this time round?  I guess not.

"Our polcy comiteee met today due to ourside pressure, and drue up a logo".

"Very good, children, and what does the logo look like?"

"here it is"

"MAMMY MAMMY, the bad lady stole our drawing!"

Does anybody get the idea?      Juvenile.

Mainstreem media types are going to bring that THING to design schools round BC

and they will get some PRICELESS answers to their questions.

Brian White

The picture i am NDP is gone from the first post here on babble today. Thanks for your mercy, o Lord.

But the facebook page is still up.

I would urge babblers to complain privately and get the leadership to can the rebrand as quickly as humanly possible.

(If the leadership is still capable of listening to the peons)

I searched the text i am NDP in google and yahoo and the only related thing that comes up is the facebook page on google search.

No images yet, thank God!

Please, please, please,   extinguish that awful logo and get rid of that facebook page.

That logo is an even bigger threat to the provincial NDP survival than Carole James leadership.

Thanks.

Stockholm

You forgot to add "A message from the Green party of British Columbia"

Brian White

Dear follower, At least you capitalized the A at the start of the sentence. Well done.

Your "dear leader" and her cronies do not have enough respect for you and her other followers to capitalize I when referring to you even though A. I is always capitalized, and

B. It is at the start of a sentence, and the first word in a sentence is capitalized.

http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/pronouns-personal.htm might be of help.

I suggest you  go to  http://www.rabble.ca/babble/humanities-science/inequality-conundrum-when....

I am sure genuine NDP members will see that I am just trying to help out.

Everything about that slogan is awful.  Incorrect use of english, too boxy,  (Good stuff is usually oval or round), ETC.

Check the brands of any major company in the world.  Nothing successful looks like that logo.

And there ARE reasons.

It isn't brilliant, it is not the end of the world, either. I have seen worse.

bagkitty bagkitty's picture

Damn, like it would have killed someone to include the image instead of just talking about.

Muttering darkly....

I thought it was a clever troll or perhaps a jibe..

Examples please, You said you have seen worse!

And give me an example of a worse one that was successful.

Edited to add O SHIT, its back!    Ok, boys and girls, fire up the gimp or photoshop or windows paint and remodel it with a real I  or a We at the start.

And instead of a white square background, do it with an oval background of whatever colour.  Or have a canadian flag on  the "oval" background to attract patriotic people.

Edited to add  (Bringing open source rabble design to the NDP)

Vansterdam Kid

Shouldn't it be yellow? Laughing

Mean Moe

It's terrible but that said the Communications Dir(acting??), Michael Roy is a one person Stirling Cooper. The party is not spending any money and it shows. That $ Sihota is getting could cover another staffer or two and we might get something better.

Now TV/web commercials of an i am NDP rant might actually help, but would have to be done in a tongue in cheek manner,

Brian White

Nobody cares enough about the NDP to help, to make their logo acceptable,  eh?

Nobody even TRIED to modify the logo to improve it.(yet).

Apathy covered in cold molasses.

I am sure the Michael Roy guy did his best and just had a bad day and there was not much oversight.

Here is a website where you can buy a logo. http://stocklogos.com/ or at least get some inspiration.

Even worse.

I am John and I am an alcoholic, is what comes to find.

ghoris

Yikes. That's a horrible video on so many levels. Leaving aside the pageant of whiteosity, I'm not sure having a bunch of vapid-sounding twenty-somethings repeating "I'm a New Democrat" or "I'm NDP" no less than four times each (with the odd meaningless platitude thrown in) is a great image for a party that wants to be taken seriously as a contender for government.  And what's with the lines "Uh, what was I going to say?", "Lemme think for a second", "Um, I have no idea what I'm doing right now."  Yeah, great image-making there - a party that doesn't know what it's doing.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Hard to watch.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Actually I stopped watching it.

lombar

Have you ever watched someone do something that you felt so embarrased about you had to look away? I am not NDP anymore...

Cueball Cueball's picture

Maybe it could be recut?

i am not saying its great but two responses come to mind-- (my lowercase "i" was just to make someone smile -- if you smiled it did its job)

1) it is not a new logo for the BC NDP -- it is a logo for a specific social media campaign.

2) the lowercase "i" is to say it is social media-- people that don't get that probably don't engage much in social media and would never see the logo in context beyond this-- it is also to mean hip and cool and for the target audience-- it means those things.

The I am NDP is a question of identity etc. -- I can see what they tried to do but have mixed feelings because for me it also sounds like a 12 step program. I have not even attended one but they are so firmly part of our social consciousness that anyone can recognize it.

Still, I could live with it-- my problem is it is too long-- they could skip all the stuff other than the reasons -- start out with I am NDP because and just have those and the video would come down to the right length and the vapidness would be removed.

The lower case "i" doesn't bother me in the least, although I do think the logo.  It's the video that is terrible.

I know what you mean--about the whole campaign--I think it was an attempt to be "hip and cool."  BUT...I can't imagine anyone under 40 found that video "hip and cool".  I think it demonstrates only that the NDP is UNhip and UNcool (unfortunately).

Compare this video by the Gen Why Media Project to the NDP video posted in #26

Cueball Cueball's picture

It's a much better edit. That said, it is actually a pretty common media motif these days.

wage zombie

It's a better edit, there's (actual) content, there're visually engaging backgrounds.  I think it connects with the viewer better.

What are you saying is the common media motif?  The handful of different people talking over music with cuts back and forth?  Or the whole "my generation is not lost" thing?

I think the NDP video is bland and empty, and it's a shame because there's so much talent in Vancouver.

Cueball Cueball's picture

"The handful of different people talking over music with cuts back and forth?"

They have been doing this in advertising for at least a decade. And I have to agree, it is completely incomprehensible that they could not do better.

aka Mycroft

Hm, looks like someone around the table said "hey, why don't we steal that 'I am Canadian' campaign from a few years ago?"

Vansterdam Kid

I support the idea of increased social media interaction. I even think getting people to articulate the idea of why they support the NDP, and therefore why you (as in the non-aligned voter should) too, is a good idea. Unfortunately this campaign is lame.

LMAO. Actually.

First though, has anyone clicked on the statistics page? Other than the 25-34 group, this is most popular with baby boomers. I suspect that the ones out of the 25-34 group are near the latter edge of that group as well. Personally, as a mid-20s person (so really, I should update my handle a bit) I find this tacky in a why are you pandering to me sort of way. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was actually male baby boomers who think they know plenty about social media and advertising who created this. I don't blame them for having young people in the video, the point is probably to use social media, and social media is dominated by younger people. I just don't see this as being effective in encouraging other social media users to say they're NDP too. Are we going to see a myriad of response videos by Canadian youtube celebrities listing why they're NDP?

Second, it's interesting that they won't let anyone actually comment on the video. If anyone who had anything to do with this knew how social media worked, they'd know that commenting is important because it helps create buzz. Of course one always runs the risk of being trolled with less than flattering comments, but that's the price you must pay. If you won't let people comment, why the hell would they want to promote your video by tweeting, facebooking or whatever-ing it? These people need to look at the more popular Youtube sensations out there and take some pointers from them.

Third, related to the other two, it's ironic that the party is becoming more top down and centralized in its decision making, essentially anti-democratic and yet they want to exploit democratized media. If you want to exploit democratized media you must democratize your political processes otherwise people will call you on your bullshit and your media campaign will be as the kids these days say a big FAIL.

The Gen Why video is quite good. I 'm going to rely on a bunch of cliché's here, but I think they're broadly applicable.

First of all, I think "kids these days" have a short attention span. So, I like the idea that the video has an almost movie like arc to it. It isn't too long so as to lose my interest and it isn't too vapid for me to go bleh.

Second, I realize it plays on a pretty common meme of throwing together a "multicultural" and "attractive/interesting" cast, but the fact that the camera work seems professional is important. I realize the NDP video was trying to go for that professional but informal look, but it was risking the Dion-coalition treatment by needlessly focusing in and out at times. Also the background conveyed a sense of substance. A blank background conveys a sense of emptiness or vapid space. Maybe they were trying to focus on the individuals? But the NDP video seemed lazy.

Third, I think my generation is a bit bipolar. On the one hand we're the product of a continued march towards individualism in the rubric of commercialism and self-gratification. It leads to various problematic issues that we've discussed on this website many times, which are by-products of our society. It also leads to a certain selfishness and lack of understanding about what ones limits are. On the other hand, I truly believe that my generation is more progressive than preceding ones on many issues, and should they be properly harnessed, they could be a valuable part of a political coalition. I think one of the reasons we're so apathetic is because we realize the world is fucked and it's pretty hard to think that we can do anything about it, so we may as well throw our hands up in the air and say fuck it. I don't excuse that, but it is what it is. I think this video speaks to that duality quite well without speaking down to the viewer. Now I'm not saying this video will create a movement or anything, but I think campaigns like this could be a part of that attempt.
