The birds COULD have flown in to the secret copy of the twin towers that the US gov built (which are phasing in and out of existance all around the country) which they secretly planned to put back in the old towers place then pretend none of it happened.
All kidding aside that IS some pretty scary stuff.

People are becoming more interested in "secret government activities that could cause such mass die offs of birds and fish". In fact, that angle was the #1 most Googled today!!
That fits with the theme of this thread, which started out at least as "media's message to the public about these incidents".
I think those Googles say something about this time in our history, in that there is a growing number of people who do not trust government, possibly growing towards that critical mass where such distrust brings about changes. In what form those changes might occur, I will not speculate on here, but suffice to say people are finally waking up to this reality.
WikiLeaks helped raise that suspicion. A curious freak event like mass die off of birds and fish brings it out. Mass media remains "apparently oblivious" to this part of the story, choosing instead to continue reporting the official explanation theories such as "the water got too cold" and "fireworks caused it" [despite the shortcomings of those theories to explain individual incidents, and in explaning why so many such events are occuring worldwide].

As for the cause, there are some pretty wild ideas going around. It appears that "Magnetic Pole Shift" is the most popular explanation amongst those of us who don't like to believe the official explanations.
Possibly the whackiest explanation so far comes from people who took an idea from Scorcha Faal [no, I am not a follower, I just came across it when researching for this thread] and applied it to these mass die offs. It is about a "time well" device discovered in a Cave in Afghanistan in 2010, which caused 8 US soldiers to disappear. This is an ancient device that has it's own, unique, energy source. HAARP: Birds and fish can be susceptible to subtle frequency alteration. An interesting YouTube post from a long-time fisherman mentioned the "pearl" plate behind the eye of the affected type of drum fish in this event. He made a plea for anyone in the area to look for signs of damage to this plate. Both birds and fish navigate in highly coordinated ways that indicate that they move and communicate via frequencies. Could the HAARP array in Alaska* have short-circuited their navigation systems? Project Blue Beam: Were they testing a sound generator for the global theater of alien invasion? This one is "out there" for sure, but NASA itself has announced its preparation for such a scenario. Brazil - Thousands of dead fish in the Pantanal
The fish are dying putting their heads out of water trying to obtain air, due to lack of oxygen in the water. This deficiency is due to the large volume of ash produced by burned, which is carried by runoff along riverbeds of the wetland.
However, the idea of blaming the ashes of forest burn has no rationale. The residents of the region, they don't believe in this theory. More probably the poisoning of water by gases would be generated by decomposing organic matter, a process that, in fact, removes oxygen from water. All very natural to some extent. What is not natural in the region is the volume of fish that died from deadly agent. It seems that something is rotten at the Gaia realm...

When residents in Mescitli village in Gümüşhane province first observed dead fish in Harşit stream 15 days ago, they thought the fish had died of natural causes, said village head Cenk İnce.

I don't know if it is, Polly Bee. I just thought it would be good to continue keeping track of these events. If they're typical and normal natural occurrences, we haven't heard of too many of them prior to this year - and the Internet has been in popular use for over a decade now.
One thing I notice is that there's a different explanation put forth for each event - and yet most of the incidents, including the ones in January, have been considered highly unusual by both experts and locals in the areas where they've occurred.

For those who don't want to download, it's a short video clip from MSNBC.com about millions of sardines and anchovies that washed up in a Redondo Beach marina today. The current theory is that the fish were trying to escape a red tide, got trapped, caused a lack of oxygen, which led to suffocation.
