Bearing witness, creating hope: rabble.ca's 10th Anniversary

On April 18th, rabble.ca will be ten years old. To celebrate, there will be a gala in Toronto:

Quote:
Join moderator and rabble founder Judy Rebick, and special guests for a panel discussion on the state of Canadian left politics, historical memory, and the upcoming federal election, and stay on after for a reception and party featuring Toronto's criticaly acclaimed LAL and dancing with DJ b#!

Can't join in person? This event will also be streamed live: http://rabble.ca/rabbletv

Ten years ago, in April 2001 at the Summit of the Americas, the security walls came down in Quebec City as one of the largest gatherings of the anti-globalization movement showed its power in the fight against capitalist globalization and trade liberalization.

The independent, progressive news website, rabble.ca, was born out of this sense of outrage - as well as hope for a different path, and for the potential the open internet to change the way news was reported and shared.

A decade later, in an increasingly militarized Canada and concentrated media environment,  rabble.ca was out front covering the G8/G20 in Toronto. When the police charged as the protesters sang Oh Canada, rabble.ca was there.  Today, over 125,000 Canadians log in to rabble every month to read stories, listen to the podcasts, watch videos, and debate the future of Canada (and more) with each other via our forum, babble.

I will be there, and hopefuly ten years' worth of babblers will represent as well.

I had the (perhaps vain) hope, that in the time leading up to the anniversary, babblers might share their favourite (or most infamous) memories and threads. I know we have some serious oldtimers here, and it would be great to highlight what makes babble such a fantastic resource.

Wow... that was a long time ago. I only recognise two names: Audra and Rasmus Raven.

ETA: Oops!!!  I clicked on TAT in that link and see many more names I recognise.

Caissa

Wow, it looks so fin de siecle.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

A lot of names on the waybackmachine are names I recognize, some of whom still post, or have posted somewhat recently: Michelle, rasmus, Doug, jrootham, skdadl, clersal, DrConway, writer, and a few others who I remember still posting only a couple years or so ago. It's amazing, considering how much rabble has changed, how its connection to its early days is still visible.

Bump!

For babblers wanting to attend, time is running out on reserving tickets! Click on the link for ticket information, reservations and event details.

I'll be there, working on the silent auction, and I really hope to see lots of other babblers there too.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Will any Toronto-area babblers be attending? I'll be there. This may be your ONLY chance to meet me in Ontario. And believe me, I am amazing.

I kind of prefer this.

Here is a taste of what to expect:

A pirate walks into a bar and he's got a sterring wheel shoved down the front of his pants. He ambles up to the bar and says: "Arrgh, gie us a whisky." The bartender, a bit taken aback, says: "Buddy! You've got a steering wheel shoved down the fornt of your pants!" The grizzled seaman nods and answers, "Yarrr! It's drivin' me nuts!"

oldgoat

uh,...ok, maybe I'm not going

skdadl

Ohai. The only reason I haven't been around much lately is that I've been tweeting and WikiLeaking my life away.

I joined sometime that first May (this post shld show date), and man, did my eyebrows go up or what!?! I had been looking for better news abt the Quebec summit than we were getting from corporate media (tear gas, tear gas, tear gas), so I googled a number of things, among them Judy Rebick's name, and up came babble! Wonder of wonders.

The rest is, y'know, history. ;)

I would love to come to the gala, but I'm fairly anti-social these days. Lunch in Toronto, maybe ok; evenings, dicey.

Anyway, I'll try to check in more often. Twitter could do a guy in pursued the way I used to pursue babble. ;)

skdadl

PS: It annoys me that I'm called 1478. I'm 478 4evr!

Fidel

Twitter? "Shld"? And, "y'know"?  Skdadl I used to look way up to you as a seasoned wordsmith. What happened? Smile

skdadl

2 mch twttr wl do tht 2 a guy. ;)

Fidel

Ah yer stl a grnd mster, Skdl.Smile Btw, Smky wnt 2 hevn a # of mnths ago. Cry

Slumberjack

I barely recognize myself in those old archives.  How I've mellowed during the past 10 years from 30 something to late 40ish.  At this rate it'll all be gone in no time I fear.  Get it while the gettin's good.

skdadl

Aw, Fidel. I am very sorry to read about Smoky, and sorry I wasn't here to talk to you then. It's always so hard because they ask so little of us and give so much back. And it's puzzling to them when they don't feel good and we do the odd things to help them that we do, many of which don't feel like help to them. Well, they probably don't really want to be "helped." They're born free and never lose that sense of what counts. *hugs*

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

One week? Better bump it up. I'm wearing my rabble overalls (the uniform of the party) all week in anticipation.

ETA. Oh Fidel, I'm so sorry about Smokey. He must be watching the Stanley Cup playoffs in the sky.

Hup, hup! Here's the facebook event.

I am going to get on a plane now. So, Torontonians, if you notice your city suddenly got cooler, that's why.

Hoping to see some of you Monday!

A decade later. I've made good friends from babble. It has challenged me. Allowed me to canvass opinions. Think about what I've been studying (I'm still in school a decade later! - high school and two degrees later) Thanks, everyone. :)

Are you responsible for the rain too?

Nyah! Tongue out

What, don't you like it? I brought the best Vancouver vintage!

You're welcome.

Caissa

I hope you will get to see some of the habs game, Catchfire.

Sadly I'm in Ottawa at the mo and will miss the festivities. I'm sure someone will have a few Strongbows for me.

And the weather here is abysmal and I can't even blame Catchfire for it. Damn.

Does this mean we are going to be without "adult supervision" tonight?

Possibly not, but one or two people usually have a netbook at these gatherings, so one of us should be popping in to keep an eye on things.

We'll all be drunk as lords of course, but that's how I moderated for four years anyway.

Tommy_Paine

Drunk I can overlook.  Being as a lord, however, is an offense against good political sense.

Ten years, holy crap.

I was looking for a place to say thank you to Judy Rebick and everyone else who has worked so hard so windbags like me could have a place to play and spout and learn a few things along the way.

But thinking about it, I'd just like to thank everyone associated with Rabble and Babble, fellow windbags included.

You guys are great.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

This talk is great and everything, but when does the dancing start?

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

There's no volume on the livestream Cf.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Dang. Wish I were there. Frown

Caissa

It would have been better than watching the Habs game. Frown

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Well, now that I've sobered up, I can say that damn, Tommy, those are some nice words.

It was wonderful to finally meet Rebecca, oldgoat, and Michelle in person, as well as radiorahim, rasmus raven, writer and other characters from rabble's past. There was some lively debate (and some not-so-lively) so I'm sorry about the sound troubles, although as anyone who watched the real issues panel livestream will know it was a theme of the night.

No sound trouble during the dancing, though. Which was much needed after the Habs game. Yikes.

rabble turns 10! Our story: launching during the Quebec City FTAA protests

Quote:
Highlight: rabble's launch during the Quebec City FTAA protests

"We went from zero to 40,000 unique visitors in one day by launching rabble.ca in the middle of the Quebec City protests against the FTAA. I was reporting from the streets calling my reports into our editor Jude MacDonald who wrote them up. It was rough on the staff getting rabble off the ground that quickly but it was worth it."

Judy Rebick, founding publisher

Against the backdrop of the third Summit of the Americas meeting and protests in Quebec City on April 18, 2001, rabble launched with unprecedented considerable immediate success. Kim Elliott, rabble's current publisher, but at the time, an activist attending the FTAA protests, clearly remembers the context of the launch. "I met Judy Rebick at a demo at the Quebec City Summit of the Americas. She was passing out rabble.ca cards announcing rabble's launch. There was no better coverage of the activist responses to the Summit than on rabble."

As protesters brought down a section of the three metre high concrete and wire fence that surrounded the site of the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations, the infamous teddy bear catapult made an appearance. Krystalline Krauss, then intern and current feature writer and Activist Communique blogger, was also there and recalls the FTAA catapult well. "[It] ‘shot' teddy bears at the FTAA security fence in Quebec City during the FTAA summit in April, 2001. I saw it first hand, and it was the saddest thing because teddy bears don't weigh anything so they didn't really have much impact. But, it was a beautiful thing to watch."

I did not dance, because dancing is SO bourgeois.

Gosh, being a social democrat is such a buzz-killer.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Bourgeois? Moi?

Quote:
At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha, a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt the Cause.

I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business. I was tired of having the Cause constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from convention and prejudice, should demand the denial of life and joy. I insisted that our Cause could not expect me to become a nun and that the movement would not be turned into a cloister. If it meant that, I did not want it.

—Emma Goldman, Living My Life

Fidel

To dance is to bare your soul a little. I often do the Elaine Benes dance just for kicks.
