That Canuck win last night was one of the most significant victories in Canuck history.The exorcism of a demon. The slaying of a dragon. Defeating the defending Cup champion. The turning of a page. The end of a Chapter. The beginning of a new Chapter. The beginning of a new book.
The immediate on-ice celebration had a frenzied and comical aspect to it. Luongo lay on the ice, on his back, like an infant. Or, that's what I saw. [Joe Thornton did something similar with his winning goal the other night and remarked, by way of explanation, that he "didn't know what to do" and so did that.] lol.
The frenzied celebration contrasted remarkably with the calm, "no big deal" comments that followed shortly after ... from coach and players alike.

Johnny Boychuck just got a penalty for a clean check. Unfortunately, Halpern's head ran into a stanchion.
Here's a radical idea - get rid of the plexiglass around the boards. The hardcore fans back home who used to pound on the boards didn't need plexiglass. We had a chicken wire/chain link fence behind the goals, but that was it. Nobody ever was hit by a puck, because they were genuine hockey fans and knew what the hell was going on on the ice, and so never were hit by pucks. Besides that, we players rarely shot the puck over the boards anyway.

On a happier note the Saint John Sea Dogs eliminated the Lewiston Maineiacs last night in a sweep, coming back from a three goal deficit on the first 3 shots of the game to ein 6-5 in Lewiston. This puts Saint John in the Q final, one step from the Memorial Cup.

The Higgins-Lapierre-Jansen line is playing really well. Hansen makes everyone he plays with better and it's obvous that the ex-habs have some chemistry. This is the first time Vancouver has made helpful pick-ups at the trade deadline since '94. Hopefully, the Nashville series is short, so Vancouver can rest up for what promises to be a doozy of a Western conference final.

Bruins finally end PP goalless skid with Chara bomb at the 18:38 marker of the third period and their 10th game of the 2011 playoffs. I don't think they're gonna choke again. Not now. A few days ago one of the kids said he just didn't care about the Canucks; he couldn't get worked up about them, whatever they did. I told him I knew what he meant. Even while I rooted for them when they had Roger Neilson as a coach, or when they had guys like the "L" line and Josh Guevremont (I was living in B.C. at the time. I remember how ticked off I was one Saturday when the CBC put on a Canucks game instead of the Leafs. Then I heard how Spinner Spencer's dad reacted)), deep down I never really cared about the team.
Maybe this article contains some explanations as to why that would be so.

Good article. The 'Nucks fans are amazingly passionate (ever been on their fan board???). But, I think the suffer from a severe inferiority complex -- as the article said, they sniff a conspiracy against them around every corner.
I almost hope they win the Cup...because I'm afraid their fragile psyche may not be able to handle another loss (especially after winning the Presidents' Trophy).

The article bolsters my view that BC is as distinct within Canada as Quebec. Look closely at a Canucks crowd and then compare the diversity of faces to a Habs or Flames game.
But given our passion for winning at hockey all the Nucks have to do is win a Cup and they will become Canada's team as much as Edmonton was.

Not a good article. The Canucks aren't Canadian enough because of their first powerplay unit?? Our goalie, top two shutdown defensemen, two of our top six forwards, our third line centre and most of our depth players are Canadian. What Canadian teams have significantly more Canadian content? Are Grabovski, Kulemin, and Kessel secret Canadians?
I understand that in the NHL there's no real reason to root for the 'Canadian' team based on the city they represent. I've always had a hard time getting too excited about the Senators. I generally like the Canadian teams, probably because of familiarity with them from TV and primarily because I like some of their players. I've always had a softsport fot the post-Gretzky Oilers and their dedication to young, fast teams, they're going to be a force in a couple of years. I also have a lot of respect for Kipper and Iggy and I would have liked to have seen them make the playoffs. I like Cammalleri, Subban and Price a lot and on the Leafs, Schenn.
But I also really enjoy watching Detroit, San Jose and Chicago. A San Jose-Vancouver series will be the most exciting hockey played this playoffs since the Vancouver-Chicago series. If you can't appreciate what Kesler, Burrows, the Sedins and company do on the ice then I'm a little sorry for you as a hockey fan because they play the game at a very high level when they're at their best.
As for Canucks fans being paranoid, sure maybe. My grandfather, who was a boxer, insisted to me that professional sports were rigged since I was five years old, and the theory that the NHL prefers to see some markets succeed over others is certainly prevalent out here. I tend to think hockey isn't the easiest sport to fix, especially if one team is a lot hungrier and talented. Although bad calls certainly can ruin games. I don't think there will be any permanent damage to Canucks fans' fragile psyches if we go down to San Jose or any of the other final four. At this point, it's pretty obvious everyone is good enough to win and Thornton and Lecavalier look especially hungry this year. That said, if the Canucks had lost against Chicago or against a clearly inferior Nashville team in the second round, the coach would have been fired. Fans have a low threshhold for failure. They're not as easygoing and relaxed out here about their hockey as they are in the T-dot.

I'm with you, melovesproles. Is it "Canadian" to disavow beautifully played hockey because it's done by an American and two Swedes? I see. Excuse me while I go paint my face red and white. One of the reasons I think CBC's hockey coverage is so good (and why HNIC has survived despite the lack of Stanley Cup success of Canadian franchises) is because they are not homers (except for Bob Cole). They focus on good players playing good hockey: Thorton, Lidstrom, Kesler, Selanne, Forsberg, whoever. They cultivate a love for the game which is why I'll watch the finals no matter who's playing.
I don't think Luongo's hairstyle is very Canadian. I'd call it: ratty.

I watch a few games during the regular season and then the playoffs. Speaking of the beauty of the game I have a pet peeve every year. The first round goes along and refs get more and more afraid to blow their whistles. The commentators talk about it and then by the second round the mime is "their just letting the boys play." To me letting the boys play is code for letting them clutch and grab etc to the point that all the teams are balanced and skill is only a marginal factor. I saw numerous times the last few games where there where blatant penalties but no calls. The games then descend into chippy bush league play.
Enforce the rules in the playoffs the same as in the regular season. IMO It is actually more important in the playoffs to be be quick with the whistle because the smart boys do respond to being sent to the penalty box and the immature out of control ones get sent packing out of the league for living in it.

The flip side of that are the excessive calls by the refs - as in the first period of the Vancouver-Nashville game - that can determine the outcome of a game or series. The issue tonight, however, due to Vancouver's outstanding penalty-killing, was the lousy quality of the ice that made for strange bounces all evening and turned defencement into shortstops. UG-LEE.
