Go Habs Go.

Excellent hockey so far, I must say.

Both the Vancouver-Chicago and Montreal-Boston series have been awesome. Good goals, gritty goals, pain, controversy and drama. The best annual sports championship in the world. And this is only round one. Three more rounds of this shit? You're having a laugh.

Caissa

Are there any hockey games scheduled for May 2?

DaveW

Sharks out of the West, Caps the East ....

not what I want, but best bets

That Canuck win last night was one of the most significant victories in Canuck history. The exorcism of a demon. The slaying of a dragon. Defeating the defending Cup champion. The turning of a page. The end of a Chapter. The beginning of a new Chapter. The beginning of a new book.

The immediate on-ice celebration had a frenzied and comical aspect to it. Luongo lay on the ice, on his back, like an infant. Or, that's what I saw. [Joe Thornton did something similar with his winning goal the other night and remarked, by way of explanation, that he "didn't know what to do" and so did that.]  lol.

The frenzied celebration contrasted remarkably with the calm, "no big deal" comments that followed shortly after ... from coach and players alike.

Next.

Johnny Boychuck just got a penalty for a clean check.  Unfortunately, Halpern's head ran into a stanchion.

Here's a radical idea - get rid of the plexiglass around the boards.  The hardcore fans back home who used to pound on the boards didn't need plexiglass.  We had a chicken wire/chain link fence behind the goals, but that was it.  Nobody ever was hit by a puck, because they were genuine hockey fans and knew what the hell was going on on the ice, and so never were hit by pucks.  Besides that, we players rarely shot the puck over the boards anyway.

Fidel

Who are the genuine hockey fans taking with them to the game though? It's family entertainment otherwise they'd lose money.

Big bad Bruins choke coming up in the third period here...

ETA:

Stanchion and now an elbow from Ference with a shitty look on his face...

High stick from Ryder. No call.

Hamerlik gets speared in the throat just before the B's third goal. No call. Refs must have lost their whistles or something.

It's game 7 and goin' into OT

Lumber Co. 3 Habs 3

Oh well, aside from the rough stuff it was a good series.

Now go get Philly you B's.

Unionist

Well that wraps up hockey for another season, sadly. All hopes must now shift to Jack. It's exciting.

Let me personally invite you onto the Canucks bandwagon.  You will find that Vancouver has one of the best roller coasters on the planet.  Lets all done the orange jersey.

Unionist

I've gotta go out and get some fresh air.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Nice to know my next three weeks just got a lot freer. Also: rot in hell, Boston.

Fidel

There's only one team I dislike more than Boston, and that's Philly. Some ducktor speculated that Carter could be out 4 weeks or more with a torn MCL.

I'll have to go with the Bruins this time. Bruins in 7.

Caissa

On a happier note the Saint John Sea Dogs eliminated the Lewiston Maineiacs last night in a sweep, coming back from a three goal deficit on the first 3 shots of the game to ein 6-5 in Lewiston. This puts Saint John in the Q final, one step from the Memorial Cup.

Fidel

Ya maybe I'm doing this next day grieving thing properly. Go straight to h-e double hockey sticks, Bruins!

Ok, I give up.

What sport is that?

Pennant trap?

That was hilarious. It was if Halpern aimed his jaw at Ference's shoulder. Ference probably thought Halpern was going to skate on past him.

That's right, doc. At least he didn't feign a concussion after rattling his noodle off that stanchion, like that faker Pacioretty. All the world's a stage.

Caissa

Junior hockey, Unionist. Final starts next Wednesday or Thursday in Saint John. I and our youngest will be in attendance.

The Canucks now have the opportunity to repeat an unusual bit of history. In defeating the Blackhawks, Vancouver became just the fourth team in NHL history to watch a 3-0 series lead disappear, but still win Game 7. The other three all happen to share one glaring bit of common fortune.

They all won the Stanley Cup.

Canucks Look to Repeat Rare Piece of History

The 1939 Boston Bruins ran out to a 3-0 lead on the New York Rangers in the 1939 semifinal round before getting pushed to a Game 7, a game they didn't win until Mel Hill scored in triple overtime to earn Boston a berth in the Final. It was Hill's third overtime goal of the series, a performance that earned him the nickname "Sudden Death." The Bruins would respond by defeating Toronto in five games to take their second Stanley Cup.

Six years later, the Maple Leafs jumped ahead of Detroit 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final ... [and] Babe Pratt scored the winner for Toronto in Game 7.

The phenomenon wouldn't occur again until 1975 when Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead against the New York Islanders.... New York pushed the defending champs to the limit before Philadelphia finally took Game 7 and then won its second straight title.

Team Canada begins its quest for gold against Belarus in the opening game of the World Hockey Championship in Slovakia.

You can watch the game live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV at 2pm et/11am pt or stay with TSN.ca for scoring updates throughout the game.

Leading up to the tournament, Canada defeated France and Czech Republic in exhibition games.

Canada is 4-0-0 all-time against Belarus at the World Hockey Championship, with Canada winning the last meeting 6-1 in 2009.

M Grabovski of the Toronto Maple Leaves (ha ha!) is the ByeloRussian captain I think.

I guess if Higgins keeps scoring key goals for the Canucks I can live vicariously through the ex-Hab third and fourth lines.

As long as your aren't cheering for Ryder.

This is old news, but it's still pretty funny...

I met him a couple years ago. He's a good guy. Savard and Bergeron, too. Chara was at the back of the room, but I could still see him.

melovesproles

The Higgins-Lapierre-Jansen line is playing really well.  Hansen makes everyone he plays with better and it's obvous that the ex-habs have some chemistry.  This is the first time Vancouver has made helpful pick-ups at the trade deadline since '94.  Hopefully, the Nashville series is short, so Vancouver can rest up for what promises to be a doozy of a Western conference final.

al-Qa'bong

Gee, Philly scored in the first minute, and Boucher stopped a puck.

God really must love America.

Look. You either go watch a hockey game, or you go to your zentai fetish party.  Make up your mind.

melovesproles

Why? Suddenly the league's fashion police are going to micro-manage how fans dress? Seems a little odd considering who their biggest celebrity pundit is.

I think it has more to do with being annoying jerks rather than fashion.  Which, again, seems a little odd considering who their biggest celebrity pundit is.

OMG the orange wave has swept Nashville.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Ha, I know! That's what I was thinking. Those Pred fans really know how to stick it to Vancouver fans!

Also: have Vancouver decided to let in a a goal with two minutes left in every close game from now on (actually starting in game six of the Chicago series) just to make it interesting? I wonder if that strategy will work against San Jose...

Caissa

Saint John Sea Dogs play game one against Gatineau Olympiques Thursday night. Looks like a sell-out in the making.

Bruins finally end PP goalless skid with Chara bomb at the 18:38 marker of the third period and their 10th game of the 2011 playoffs. I don't think they're gonna choke again. Not now. Not with another 3-0 lead in games one year later. Impossible. Inconceivable. No way, Jose. It would be the dog yaking on a bone under the dinner table to top all chokes in the history of sports. Can't happen.

DaveW

because of the very bad reputations of some Sunbelt franchises, it escapes Canadian fans' attention there are good fan bases in a couple of places -- San Jose, Dallas, even Anaheim and Tampa

-- and I think if Lecavelier and Co. keep rolling, the Northeast squads might get a shock and Tampa would, uh, rock

go Vinny!

A few days ago one of the kids said he just didn't care about the Canucks; he couldn't get worked up about them, whatever they did.  I told him I knew what he meant.  Even while I rooted for them when they had Roger Neilson as a coach, or when they had guys like the "L" line and Josh Guevremont (I was living in B.C. at the time.  I remember how ticked off I was one Saturday when the CBC put on a Canucks game instead of the Leafs.  Then I heard how Spinner Spencer's dad reacted)), deep down I never really cared about the team.

Maybe this article contains some explanations as to why that would be so.

The Canucks are NOT Canada's team!

Good article.  The 'Nucks fans are amazingly passionate (ever been on their fan board???).  But, I think the suffer from a severe inferiority complex -- as the article said, they sniff a conspiracy against them around every corner.

I almost hope they win the Cup...because I'm afraid their fragile psyche may not be able to handle another loss (especially after winning the Presidents' Trophy).

Fidel

Weren't the Caps President's Choice Winners last year? lol! Hey there's always next season.

GO HABS GO!

Indeed.  Go Habs; get a move on!

The article bolsters my view that BC is as distinct within Canada as Quebec.  Look closely at a Canucks crowd and then compare the diversity of faces to a Habs or Flames game.

But given our passion for winning at hockey all the Nucks have to do is win a Cup and they will become Canada's team as much as Edmonton was.

melovesproles

Not a good article.  The Canucks aren't Canadian enough because of their first powerplay unit??  Our goalie, top two shutdown defensemen, two of our top six forwards, our third line centre and most of our depth players are Canadian.  What Canadian teams have significantly more Canadian content?  Are Grabovski, Kulemin, and Kessel secret Canadians?

I understand that in the NHL there's no real reason to root for the 'Canadian' team based on the city they represent.  I've always had a hard time getting too excited about the Senators.  I generally like the Canadian teams, probably because of familiarity with them from TV and primarily because I like some of their players.  I've always had a softsport fot the post-Gretzky Oilers and their dedication to young, fast teams, they're going to be a force in a couple of years.  I also have a lot of respect for Kipper and Iggy and I would have liked to have seen them make the playoffs.  I like Cammalleri, Subban and Price a lot and on the Leafs, Schenn.

But I also really enjoy watching Detroit, San Jose and Chicago.  A San Jose-Vancouver series will be the most exciting hockey played this playoffs since the Vancouver-Chicago series.  If you can't appreciate what Kesler, Burrows, the Sedins and company do on the ice then I'm a little sorry for you as a hockey fan because they play the game at a very high level when they're at their best.

As for Canucks fans being paranoid, sure maybe.  My grandfather, who was a boxer, insisted to me that professional sports were rigged since I was five years old, and the theory that the NHL prefers to see some markets succeed over others is certainly prevalent out here.  I tend to think hockey isn't the easiest sport to fix, especially if one team is a lot hungrier and talented.  Although bad calls certainly can ruin games.  I don't think there will be any permanent damage to Canucks fans' fragile psyches if we go down to San Jose or any of the other final four.  At this point, it's pretty obvious everyone is good enough to win and Thornton and Lecavalier look especially hungry this year.  That said, if the Canucks had lost against Chicago or against a clearly inferior Nashville team in the second round, the coach would have been fired.  Fans have a low threshhold for failure.  They're not as easygoing and relaxed out here about their hockey as they are in the T-dot.

Dogs and Olympiques tied at one game a piece. Game 3 tonight in Gatineau.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

I'm with you, melovesproles. Is it "Canadian" to disavow beautifully played hockey because it's done by an American and two Swedes? I see. Excuse me while I go paint my face red and white. One of the reasons I think CBC's hockey coverage is so good (and why HNIC has survived despite the lack of Stanley Cup success of Canadian franchises) is because they are not homers (except for Bob Cole). They focus on good players playing good hockey: Thorton, Lidstrom, Kesler, Selanne, Forsberg, whoever. They cultivate a love for the game which is why I'll watch the finals no matter who's playing.

I don't think Luongo's hairstyle is very Canadian. I'd call it: ratty.

I watch a few games during the regular season and then the playoffs.  Speaking of the beauty of the game I have a pet peeve every year.  The first round goes along and refs get more and more afraid to blow their whistles.  The commentators talk about it and then by the second round the mime is "their just letting the boys play."  To me letting the boys play is code for letting them clutch and grab etc to the point that all the teams are balanced and skill is only a marginal factor.  I saw numerous times the last few games where there where blatant penalties but no calls.  The games then descend into chippy bush league play.

Enforce the rules in the playoffs the same as in the regular season.  IMO It is actually more important in the playoffs to be be quick with the whistle because the smart boys do respond to being sent to the penalty box and the immature out of control ones get sent packing out of the league for living in it.

Touche! Love the golf jokes. And which team are you cheering for this spring? lol!

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

The flip side of that are the excessive calls by the refs - as in the first period of the Vancouver-Nashville game - that can determine the outcome of a game or series. The issue tonight, however, due to Vancouver's outstanding penalty-killing, was the lousy quality of the ice that made for strange bounces all evening and turned defencement into shortstops. UG-LEE.

Anyway, for the Canucks, NEXT.
