I used to blame the government

I used to blame the government and the crooked electoral system.

Now, however, after the Harper majority, I blame the people.

The list of the Harper-atrocities is a very long one and has been widely publicized during the election campaign. It is impossible not to know them.

Just a few from the top:

- The international criminal court is investigating Canada for possible war crimes in Afghanistan

- Harper was the first prime minister in Canadian History found in contempt of parliament

- We are the international outlaws in climate change contributtion with our tar sand project

- The G20 atrocities were an obvious sign of a police state we live in

- The 36+ billion $ fighter plane rip-off

etc., etc., etc.

Yet, enough people voted for him to give him a majority, knowing that he can do anything he wants for 5 years without anyone able to stop him.

When Malrony got his majority, he said: "Give me a year and you won't recognize this country"

Gues what Harper will do to the country we love.

The Germans democratically elected Hitler in 1936, even though he had published Mein Kampf before, for everyone to see and read.

Is it true that every western nation has the government they deserve?

After all, enough of them voted for it.

Hitler was actually not democratically elected. He came to power in a backdoor coalition deal (like Stephane dion j/k). His party had a large minority in parliment which then shrank after the next election so the power brokers and bankers worked a deal with him and his party which backfired on them when he just took over.

It was their 'democratic' system that made it possible. It would not have been possible if a much smaller number of Germans voted for him. But who is quibbling?

Bacchus

All present 'democratic' systems make that possible alien. He could come to power again in Israel, Sweden, germany, France, Italy, Canada, UK, Australia etc.

Coalition power deals are in fact much more common now then they were then.

In my riding, Larry Miller, the lard-headed bastard got more votes than all the opposition candidates combined. I don't blame the system for that -- I blame the people in my riding. It makes me sick to live among them.

Thanks for identifying the 800 lb gorilla in the room. I have the same problem with people being angry with Wal Mart and McDonalds; the corporations aren't at fault for being heartless destructive profit machines - that's their nature. The real problem with say, McDonalds, are those "billions and billions served."

As for the recent federal election, the people have spoken, and the people are slack-jawed drooling yahoos.

Todrick of Chat...

I think Mr. Miller holds the riding because he relates to the majority of the people in the riding for various reasons. I do not agree to the reasons, however he does try his hardest to make connections with the people in the riding whether for their well being or not.

For the last two elections the NDP has been complete lost, only selecting a candidate at the last possible moment. The Liberals and Green Parties had candidates well in advance of the election however they had no support from the various national headquarters during the election which did not help their chances of winning.

None of the major political party leaders visited our riding in the last election which goes to show we are not an important riding at all.

The people will continue electing Mr. Miller until the other political parties take interest in the people and the riding. The people for good reason or not believe in Mr. Miller and his actions over the last few years over the other political party members.

As Eeyore in "Winnie the Pooh" said: "They haven't got Brains, any of them, only grey fluff that's blown into their heads by mistake, and they don't Think... "

What did Eeyore have to say about irony?

I Googled "Eeyore irony" and this is what came up: "This is an Eeyore-free zone and that crap will not be tolerated here" Wink

I think it's a little unfair to be calling people names just because you disagree with them.  After all, I'm sure most of them think the same thing about NDP supporters.

Exactly! They are allowed to call names and condemn political opponents and sponsor news networks that tell ever-more-blatant lies, but we have to play nice.

Consider, in a fair and balanced manner - that is, weighing as equal all public statements, true and false, hot air and fact, reasoned and hysterical, expert and moronic - and deduce from them which party is on whose side, what kind future each is likely to bring about, and then have the most democratic of all possible elections in this best of all possible worlds.

alien

Absentia is right!

We live in a world where the gloves are off.

It is common practice to attack us, "bleeding heart liberals" with the most vicious, most outrageous lies and distortions, to call us any name they choose, bordering on hate-crime, and we are expected to be polite to the bastards?

It is time to fight back and call spades spades, it is time to stand up for ourselves because nobody else will. Look at Obama and the pathetic democrats in the US - do you want to follow their example of being cowardly, mealy-mouthed apologists?

Time for people to wake up and stop voting against their own self interest.

Said post is more than a little unfair, it actually entered the realm of  non-progressive self-righteous supremacy. Other people have been suspended for less.

For example, George Victor got suspended one time for calling broad swathes of people the "unwashed masses" and another time for using "the great unread".

Both terms are less in meaness and negative impact than the one you quoted.

Here we go again!

Mimosaism at its best.

Advice: get over it or get therapy.

I am outta here, again!

I think that quote was far too swift.

Agreed, Caissa. al-Q can speak for himself, but I think it's pretty clear his post was ironic.

And alien, your performances are getting a bit tiring. If you are so brittle and capricious that a single post sends you fleeing into the night, I think we can do without.

I was thinking more of this definition.  Hmm, you work at a university, right?
