Not sure why this is in banter?  It was a workplace accident and the guy almost died.

Agreed.

I've read enough stories about local people being ground up by augers, having body parts frozen off by pressure hose breaks, and fried by electical accidents or buried in hot asphalt or manure.

There is nothing funny about this at all, and especially no cause for homophobic slurs. There are websites devoted to mutilation, death and decay for humour and vicarious thrills. I don't think this is one of them.
