Still waiting for the page to download, been ten minutes already. I hate dialup ISPs!

Pretty slow for me, and it suddenly looks like it did when I tried to run it on explorer.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Just checked out the beta version of the new rabble site. I didn't have any problems logging into my account. The problem I have encountered is that my username has reverted to my login name. My username on the old babble is Left Turn, but my login name is Tim K. The Drupal software has made my Tim K. login name from my original account, my new user name. I'm hoping this can be rectified. I expect that anyone who ever got the babble moderators to change their username, will have this problem.

Yup, I'm finding it really slow too.

Left Turn, you're kidding me. It's supposed to be the other way around - people are supposed to use their screen names on babble, not their login names. All the login names are supposed to be gone.

And it's for that very reason - because a lot of people, for some reason, use their real names as their login and then an alias as their screen name.

Not necessarily. My original login name and screen name here was Slim. I had the screen name changed to pogge at the first opportunity we were given after I started the blog so I'd have the same identity everywhere. And pogge is what I am on the beta site. I'd prove it to you, too, except that I just tried again to post and while I got further than I have before, I still didn't get a comment up. I got a screen full of errors. Different errors than last time, too.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

rabble.ca raises a ruckus and launches its new site today

news site also announces partnership with the Council of Canadians, United Steelworkers, and Douglas Coldwell Foundation

rabble.ca, Canada’s most widely read independent news media site, introduces three new strategic partnerships today and launches its newly designed website: you can find it at beta.rabble.ca.

“We’re very proud to be introducing new community partnerships together with this relaunch,” said rabble.ca publisher, Kim Elliott. “In these challenging economic and political times, we are very pleased to introduce a new strategic partnership with Canada’s most influential activist-based organization, the Council of Canadians.”

“rabble is a crucial resource for achieving media democracy in Canada in this era of increasing corporate media centralization,” says Maude Barlow, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians and outspoken advocate for media democracy. “That’s why the Council of Canadians supports rabble.”

Also announced today are new partnerships with the Douglas Coldwell Foundation, partner on the soon to be released on-line Activist Toolkit, as well as with the United Steelworkers, who join rabble today as the sponsor of rabbletv – rabble’s cutting edge new media component featuring live and pre-recorded online video.

rabble.ca’s new website, which can be viewed at beta.rabble.ca, offers visitors an opportunity to provide feedback on the newly redesigned website, and introduces state of the art interactive features including the live streaming capacity of rabbletv, Canada’s largest progressive podcast network, and other interactive and sharing tools.

The new website is built on an open-source platform. “rabble.ca is happy to contribute back to the open source community it has been built upon,” explained Elliott. “rabble.ca developers have released modules back to the drupal community for other organizations to make use of and to promote democratic media tools.”

Building on their acclaimed and popular election blog, rabble will also be introducing regular blogs on the website. “With the election blog, for the first time, I felt like progressives in Canada had a real daily alternative to mainstream media analysis,” explained Derrick O’Keefe, editor of rabble.ca. “We intend to build on that and make rabble the ‘go to’ place for common sense analysis devoid of corporate media spin in this time of economic crisis and minority government.”

rabble.ca chose to relaunch on Media Democracy Day, a day founded to challenge media concentration in Canada and to recognize the power of alternative media. Media Democracy Day activities take place throughout the day today at the University of Toronto, and conclude this evening with a roundtable debrief on the federal election, featuring Maude Barlow, Murray Dobbin, Jessica Yee, Anne Lagacй-Dowson and Duncan Cameron, and a celebration with LAL, Mraya (with Maryem Tollar) and Lorraine Segato at the Steamwhistle Brewery in Toronto Ontario.

Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence.

ETA:

I went away for a bit to see if I'd calm down but instead I'm even more pissed off. That's just insulting to a bunch of us. If we'd waited for rabble to come up with a platform that accommodates blogging we'd have been waiting for five years which is how long I've been at it.

Rabble has a bad case of NIH Syndrome (Not Invented Here).

I'm not kidding. Granted, I havn't posted anything, because I know that any posts made on the beta site will dissapear when the real version goes up. However, my password was connected to my login name, not my username, and my most recent posts page says Most Recent Posts by Tim K.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

I bet I know what happened with my username. I actually have two accounts on rabble where my username is Left Turn.

My original username when I joined babble way back in October 2004, was my real name. Then in January 2005 there was an incident where Sean Holman used info I'd posted on rabble in an article in the public eye online, and Budd Campbell made a comment on said article where he made defamatory comments about me.

After this incident, and also because of concerns over posting stuff online under my own name that future employers could read, I requested Audra let me change my username. When that didn't appear to go anywhere, I created a second in March 2005, with the username Left Turn. Then in April 2005, Audra granted us a name change day, and I changed my username on my original account to Left Turn.

Now that the login name and username are the same, there cannot be two accounts with Left Turn, because the database that's behind this all, won't be able to have two entries under the same name. So I'm guessing that my original account is Left Turn, and my second account became Tim K.

The question is, can this problem be fixed? I really don't care about the first account, it could be deleted for all I care. What I want is for the account I currently post under to be named Left Turn, and not Tim K.

[edited to add]

What you could do is go and make the Left Turn acoount "Leftturn", without spaces, and the Tim K. account "Left Turn". That would solve the problem.

I don't dare go the new site until I read a clear how-to guide on a separate thread in this one. I have tried to piece basic how-to information from hurried half-answers to vague questions here at the bottom of this party thread, and I must say I don't feel this is the way to tutor babblers on a yet-to-be-functional changeover in my book. And shouldn't the information be here rather than on a site we have trouble accessing?

So before some of you get pissed and start calling me the problem, I am out of here until bugs are quashed and a decent how-to guide is hammered out and posted separately.

On the beta site, I was only able to login with my existing login (not screen name). Existing posts show up with my login name (which reveals my full name) rather than my screen name. This is the case whether or not I'm logged in.

oldgoat

So I got back a little while ago. It was really great, and quite well attended. Several hundred people, I'd say. Good discussion and good music. Saw several babblers there, but would have liked to meet more.

Just want to say that Michelle's moderating might be just a bit fuzzy tomorrow.

Good lord, did I really say that? Well I was outside of the curve or whatever.

Had a chance to talk to the tech guy who's doing all this. Surprised he had time to attend, he was looking a bit bleary. All things will work out ok in the fullness of time.

Saying that all things will work out in the fullness of time won't solve my problem.

Maybe a different explanation will help you understand my problem.

I have two rabble accounts. One is babbler number 7142 (8142 on the new software). The other is babbler number 8662 (9662 on the new software). On the old babble, both accounts have the username "Left Turn". The database allows this, because the login names were different. Given that there's only one name associated with the accounts on the new rabble, only one of these accounts can have the "Left Turn" name. The new babble software gave the "Left Turn" name to the 8142 account, because it comes first in the numerical sequence. It gave the 9662 account, which is this account, my login name from this version of rabble, which is "Tim K."

I have not used the 8142 account since march 2005. Since March 2005, I have used the 8662 account. I wish the 9662 account to be named "Left Turn". In order to accomplish this, the 8142 account needs to be renamed "leftturn".

I've sent a message about this via the feedback section of the beta version of the new rabble. Hopefully this gets sorted out, and I don't have to keep pushing people's buttons any more.

ETA: Well, that didn't work. I have no idea what my original sign-up name was; I mean, that was seven and a half years ago. I guess I'll just wait until someone explains how to cope in a FAQ somewhere.

What a fabulous night! Thanks for everyone who came out! Unfortunately, I didn't get home until just after one, so I'm also a little fuzzy-headed today!

I went into the contact and it is too wide, at least for my computer.

The one that boom left is the same for me?????

Martin and Left turn, and all the rest of the confused. (which includes me)

If I don't have answers to all your questions it means that in some cases they exist and I don't know, and in more cases they don't exist. The beta site is to work out bugs, because putting it up in real time and letting people play on it is the best way to do that. Anything you do on it right now will not be in the final product.

Martin, in your case you presumably use your real name as a user name. I use oldgoat as a user name, and my real name as a login name, which does not appear publicly.

What is going on right now is a really huge data transfer from old to new, and this is creating some wonkiness. Full instructions and an FAQ will be there when we know what the actual intended differences are between the two sites, and what was just wonkiness.

If anyone has forgotten thier original login information, PM me and I can look it up.

For what it's worth, I couldn't log in either.

Hi skdadl. Test away.

Boom Boom, it's likely not you. If it's not working, I'd give up for now and try another day. I was on successfully earlier in the week, but couldn't log in yesterday at all. I can't try now because my work computer doesn't have firefox.

Like I said, the guy told me that the data transfer process is going on right now, and it's making the system pretty wobbly.

remind remind's picture

I used explorer earlier this morning to go in and it worked fine for me, and looked exactly the same as firefox. I spent an hour downloading the new version of firefox so I could test it, and then yesterday had to do a system restore and lost the whole new download. Not going to load firefox again, so decided to try it with explorer.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I tried Firefox probably two years ago, and didn't like the appearance of the thing - all my screen icons had an orange fox attached to them - ugly as hell.

pogge

You can get Themes for Firefox that change the appearance. There are available.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I didn't know that! Can I install Firefox with no theme at all? I like simplicity.

No but some of them are pretty minimalist. You just need to find one you like.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Does anyone know when they're going to get around to dealing with user issues on the new rabble, namely babblers with wrong names?

On a more positve note, I've noticed that they've changed the background colours on the new babble to more closely match the ones on the old babble. Instead of the light blue background that was there yesterday, they now have white and grey background that's similar to the old babble. Definitely a big improvement.

CMOT Dibbler

Do I have to have Firefox in order to use the new site?

I understand the beta site is still just a practice site, and stuff will be periodically wiped.

I logged on sucessfully a little while ago on internet explorer. I used my login name, and not my user name.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, we have that feature. It will be concious, and it WILL hold grudges. It can also cross reference data on the internet at large, and in most cases find out where you live. God help any of you who have filed your taxes online.

These features did cost a bit extra, but we figure you're worth it.

Just tried connecting to the Beta site.

Had no trouble registering, but noticed that my member number had changed from 3787 to 4787. Somehow a digit got misread. Babble must have the latest software that can make human mistakes.

Opened a new post to see how it works, but could not find the edit button to add comments.

As mine changed from 2440 to 3440. I'm betting it's intentional though I don't know for sure nor do I know the reason behind it.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Mine went from 8662 to 9662. I'm guessing every babbler number is 1000 higher on the new babble.

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

I really think we're being kept in the dark about this whole rabble relaunch.

On the new rabble, there are a number of us who have wound up with our login names as opposed to our usernames, when we were told our login names would be gone. So far, there has been no metion of whether this problem can be fixed, and if it can be fixed, when and how this might be done.

We also havn't been told whether posts made on the old rabble during the test run on the beta site, will be transferred over to the permanent version of the new rabble.

Finally, we havn't been told when the actual changeover to the permanent version of the new rabble will take place. If this is unknown, it would be nice if someone could tell us. As it is, we are left with the impression that the date of the full changeover to the permanent version of the new babble, may be known by some (or all) of the staff, and if so, is not being publicly released.

I wish someone with a bit more knowledge of the situation than Oldgoat, would come on here and let us know what's going on regarding these concerns.

[ 25 October 2008: Message edited by: Left Turn ]

Cueball Cueball's picture

Not really a big deal. Some posts might get lost. But think of the good things... "Layton's campaign performance was best: poll" is still open and is missing all the embarrassing NDP thuggery at the end... or more likely we can do it all again!

Yay!

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Cueball, I agree that a few days worth of lost posts is not the biggest deal in the world. However, what I think is a big deal, is being kept in the dark about all this, especially when some of us have our login names, rather than our usernames, on the new rabble.

Cueball Cueball's picture

I am sure they will sort it out, and the lost ID's will be sorted out... in time. These things are tough, and for a relaunch of what is quite clearly a major redesign and not just some generic package BB makeover its looks quite good.

Michelle

Nobody is being kept in the dark deliberately. We're trying to sort out all the bugs in the new software and it's difficult.

Also, all of us rabble staff are having trouble with our e-mail over the last day or two - I think it has something to do with the entire server being bogged down by the transfer of, like, millions of rabble posts (or however many). So most of us aren't getting our e-mails and are having a hard time communicating with each other, which of course makes it hard for me to communicate with you about this stuff. I'm getting only the occasional e-mail here and there.

One e-mail I got from one of our tech guys is this one, which might help:

quote:

for folks experiencing troubles with their usernames/passwords.
here's what they should do.

go to the login screen and request a new password for either the login name that they think they should have ...
or the email account they used.

there will be some irregularities.
this is because:

on the old system it allowed users to have duplicate usernames.
ie. 4 babblers could call themselves theUltimateBabbler20092 (if they happened too

In the new system, there can only be one of each. The email address will let them know what their name has been reverted to.

Also, if you can keep track of the ones that are not able to reclaim their accounts, we can match them up and make sure they get the right account back so that they maintain their history etc.

Please also remember that our tech guys have been working around the clock, putting in massive volunteer hours, trying to get this beta version up and running on time. It's a huge, huge project. So they're likely not going to respond immediately to feedback, which they're likely deluged with. But they're reading it and likely doing tech triage.

Left Turn, I will let them know what happened with your account and I'm sure they'll do their best to resolve it.

As for how long we're keeping the old site up - I've heard something like 10 days or so. But we can't give you an exact date because we've never done something this huge before and so that's a guesstimate.
