Canada Student Loans Service Centre Sucks

They are totally screwing me at student loans and there is nothing I can do. I paid my interest up to date at the end of August and they told me that there would be 15 business days to switch me from being a "payer" to being a "borrower". I was upset because I would not get my money until 24th of September, but fortunately I had put away enough money to survive through the first month.

So I phoned the today, the 23rd, to make sure everything was going smooth and the guy told me there was a mistke and this should have been dispersed weeks ago and now it will be another 14 business days before I will get it. Now that will take me into October and I have definitely not set aside enough money for that month.

I keep complaining to the guy that this is on their end and I did everything right and he says there is nothing he can do. So I asked to talk to his supervisor and he has tried to discourage me 3 times and i have been waiting on hold for over 1 hour and he keeps assuring me that the supervisor can do nothing so I am going to get his name and then phone my useless MP Ray Boughen and see what I can do since this is totally student loans fault.

Worst of all NSLSC is a private company that doesn't give two shits about people.

Any advice anyone?

Name of private company is Tricura.

Are you currently a student, kn? If so, you should head to your institutions Financial Aid centre. They can often give emergency relief aid fairly quickly that will help you survive until your regular aid comes in.

In the meantime, join student groups which resist tuition hikes and the transferrence of education from public money to private debt, and the outsourcing of aid delivery to private, for-profit companies!

Yes I am a student at the University of Regina. Thanks for the advice on Financial Aid. Yeah all this private contracting has got to stop.

Good. Your Aid centre may have emergency loans or even a grant. Always worth checking out, especially in times of need. Good luck, and I'd be interested to hear if it works out.

Unfortunately, I don't hold out much hope on getting anything out of your CSL agent's supervisor. But I'm cynical like that.

Well, I took his name and gave it to my MP so hopefully that will scare one of them into some action. They both said they were going to phone me back later today so I will see.

Good luck with your situation kn.  I am also late on my tuition while waiting for a student loan, but luckily I work part time so I can get by with everything else.

I was contacted by a manager and they told me they will expedite the discharging of my loan. Halelujah!

Yeah for government bureacracy, I guess you just need to challenge power to make it justify itself.

Good to hear!

I recently paid my student loans off, though I wasn't required to get too many loans because I had a job with a livable wage during my undergraduate. Even dealing with them when I was paying back my modest-ish (not really, but apparently 15K is below average for student debt after a Bachelors) loan was a hassle. It was very hit or miss, where some agents would be helpful and nice whereas others were downright rude. I think it's a simple customer service issue, in so far as they're over worked and underpaid. I think some people there also think it's a form of welfare or something and that the customer should therefore be treated shittly (not that they should if it were aid - but I think the mentality exists). Now that I know that they're a private company this doesn't surprise me.

I'm not looking forward to dealing with them again when I go to graduate school.
