Toronto Airport Security - GARDA Security

Security screeners who work for Garda, and are sub-contracted to the Canadian Air Transportation Security Agency for air travel security screening at Toronto Pearson, have been "working to rule" for the past three days now. Apparently Garda received an injuction from the Industrial Relations Board ordering the screeners to cease slowing things down at the airport, where flight delays of up to 2 hours are reported.

So, if they are working to the letter of the contract, what exactly can the IRB, Garda, or CATSA, realistically do? It seems to me that the workers are fully within the law to behave as they are. But the media is making out like the workers are the enemy.

In my opinion, the workers chose an excellent time to do this, i.e. the start of the Thanksgiving holiday weeking. Good on them!

That's a good question - I'd assume the workers have performance reviews of some sort. If they're not doing their job "well", however that's defined management definitely has a club. Whether they'll use it or not is another question.

More to the point is what options the Canadian Air Transport Security Agency has - what exactly does their contract with Garda say? If CATSA cancels their contract with Garda the workers are SOL and it'll be up to Garda to handle the fallout, not CATSA and not the government.

If by "excellent time" you mean one chosen to piss off the maximum number of people I have to agree fully. So the workers shouldn't expect any sort of broad public support.

What will they do to the working to rule workers? Suspend them of course and take legal action against them
