A user account on the social networking site Twitter that's being used to post personal information on Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has been linked to an IP address on Parliament Hill.
The anonymous account uses an IP address that originates within the House of Commons, the Ottawa Citizen reported Friday.
An IP address is a unique number that identifies computers in a network, which suggests that someone who works on Parliament Hill may be posting Toews's personal information online.

Saw Toews on QP yesterday. He clearly looks flustered and tired. I think he regrets some of the things he's been saying.
To whom? The media, or his wife?
https://twitter.com/#!/vikileaks30
Well, in the House of Commons, for sure - the stuff that's getting him in trouble.
Could we drop a "ter" and rename this thread to "Toews a Twit"?
I expected all would do that silently, Winston.
I do hope that the person behind vikileaks30 is NOT an NDP staffer or MP. I get the fun we have all had at the Honourable Blowhard's over-the-top rhetoric "with us or with the child pornographers" but I though Jack had tried to instill in us a higher standard.
I would hate to think that the Tories would be able to judo-flip us on something like this when clearly they are the ones who should have to be explaining their draconian thought-police bill.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews will request a parliamentary investigation into a Twitter account that's being used to post his personal information and is linked to an IP address in the House of Commons.

I'm probably going to need more popcorn and booze.
Apparently Toews will ask the courts to allow him to intercept all Canadian internet and telephone traffic in an attempt to defend his stained honour.
Pass it on.
All the info that's been posted on the Twitter feed is publically accessible information. Nobody hacked his records or violated his privacy. I say keep it up. If a guy wants to run on "traditional family values" and supports "traditional marriage" while carrying on an affair and fathering a love child with his mistress and run as a "fiscal conservative" while spending hundreds of taxpayers dollars at high-end restaurants, his hypocrisy deserves to be exposed.
...and being a deadbeat that does not make support payments on time.
I agree. It has the potential to become an unfortunate distraction from the actual issue.
I have heard rumours about the identity of the leaker, none of which point to anyone on the orange team. I am not putting any store by them until I find hard proof, though. If it is who I think it is, and they are unmasked, then there could be very unpleasant consequences for a certain party in a certain byelection happening right now.
existing thread on background
I think it was Jason Kenney #maybeKenneydidit
[url=http://www.straight.com/article-610386/vancouver/nobody-should-lose-thei... should lose their job for telling Canadians the truth about Vic Toews[/url]
What's this about Vic Toews fathering a child in a headlock?
Pass it on.
Last time I checked, Eggspectation wasn't a high end restaurant. How he spent $500 there is beyond me.
He may have sponsored a reception for all his gfs and kids born in a headlock?
I'm sure there's a logical explanation.
Comments are pouring in ...
Tories accuse NDP of ‘dirty, sleazy’ Twitter attack on e-snooping champion
If only there was some way to control information on the internet.....
Dude, those restaurants aren't that big. Plus, those babies scream loudly.
Tories Accuse NDP of 'dirty, sleazy' Twitter Attack on E-Snooping Champion
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-notebook/tories-accu...
"The Harper government is accusing the NDP of being behind a Twitter attack on Public Security Minister Vic Toews that has been anonymously broadcasting details of his marital breakdown.."
Actually, all we need is a law enabling the autorities to identify the #vikileaks30 tweeter without having to go through messy and lengthy court procedures.
How's a man to defend his reputation when anonymous people are publishing the truth about him anyways????
CBC's P&P just now: that Twitter account might just be a computer on the Hill that everyone has access to - you can't prove who used it.
I think this is an important point to highlight. Anyways, what's that expression again for people who demand investigations into "slander" against them and only end up having this information spread ten times as far? Is it the Streisand Effect or is that slightly different?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect
I say couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy. What a goon. Typical bully; can dish it out but can't take it. They never can.
I was reading the Vic Toews stuff on Twitter...and this was the comment of
one of the posters...pretty funny..
--------------------------------------
I want someone to introduce a bill called the 'Protecting Babysitters from
Conservative Predators Act' .....
Evan Solomon just said on P&P that Toews told him on "The House" he hasn't read three sections of his own bill yet.
I was checking out the Globe comments section on this story, and some of them are pretty funny.
Oh I would dearly love this to be originating with some digruntled con staffer. Well, I can dream can't I?
As much as I dislike this fool, its still harassment.
Although this does seem like karma....
P&P had an expert and he said it could be anyone, because there's no way you can tie down who's on that one computer just using an IP address. He also said this is the reality of politics today - if you attack the Internet, you can expect the Internet to bite back - hard.
Everybody seems to be getting nicely sucked into the Conservative strategy; focus on the identity of the so-called "leaker", so that he or she can be made into the bad guy.
In reality, there was no leak, except insofar as an informal press embargo on the Toews divorce had effectively squelched the story that was widely known among the sycophantic press gallery on the Hill. We should be demanding to know why this wasn't reported by the media years ago, instead of being left to be disseminated through twitter.
They were talking about just that on P&P, MS. That would be Rosie Barton, and her three-person panel. One of them said the story (Vic Toew's marital transgressions) was squelched, and we should find out why.
ETA: They pointed out that this material is a matter of public record, and that no one has a right to suppress it.
There are times when a politician's personal life is relevant and is the public's business. This is one area where the American press is better than the Canadian press.
The Canadian press seems to have forgotten that when a conservative politician campaigns on a platform of family values and the sanctity of marriage, they deserve to be called out if they do not practice what they have been trying to legislate. In 2005, Vic Towes was one of the biggest opponents of gay marriage on the House of Commons committee. He went on and on for months about how gays would threaten the sanctity of marriage, and then he turns around and cheats on his wife and fathers a child with the woman he was cheating with. Absolute and utter hypocrite and piece of garbage.
He is just like Newt Gingrich.
I wonder who it is in the Con Caucus or staff that dislikes Toews so much that he/she sent that Twitter message. Then again maybe it was Bob Rae who sent it as this sounds more like a Liberal tactic.
Apparently Toews has pissed off Anonymous...
And I agree with everyone else. Even if they manage to pinpoint the person behind the vikileaks account, who cares? They haven't broadcast anything except public information.
I'm not a big fan of American-style reporting on personal lives of politicians. I don't give a damn about people's marriages, I don't care if they're "cheating", and I think relationships are complicated things and people don't always make the best decisions, and often marriages end before the divorce happens, and all that stuff. And I don't support societally enforced monogamy. So in most cases, I DON'T want to hear about the private lives of politicians because I don't care, it's not relevant, and I don't want to know.
But Toew's political stands on "family values", his public stands in favour of "traditional marriage", his accusations that people who don't support this bill stand with the child pornographers, and his willingness to invade everyone else's privacy makes this protest legitimate. This Twitter protest is a brilliant political strategy, and if it WAS someone in the NDP, then good on them!
radiorahim read me a hilarious tweet he saw a couple of days ago by someone telling Vic that he was trying to decide whether to pay the babysitter pre- or post-coitus, then asking Vic what he would do. Ouch!
If you type this into the Twitter search engine:
tellviceverything babysitter
You'll find at least 15 minutes of unwholesome entertainment!
It's too bad that the vikileaks account was taken down, but it did its job.
I agree most wholeheartedly with everything you wrote!
I agree with Heather Mallick. The real surprise in all of this is the revelation that there actually at least three women in the world who found a repulsive man like Toews attractive enough to want to have sex with him. Yeccchhhhh!
It's all laid out here:
How old was this baby sitter that Toews got pregnant?
And I have never heard of Dan Savage before but I think he is my new favourite person. I just loved this:
"Excuse me, Canadian-press pansies, but a politician who scares up votes attacking the private lives of others, a politician who insists that other people are out to destroy his marriage, can't be allowed to hide behind "my private business!" when it turns out that the only threat to the politician's marriage was the politician's own greasy cock."
Now, if the shoe was on the other foot, and an NDP MP (or leadership contender or leader) was found out to be shtooping the babysitter, stiffing "the wife" on child support and generally acting like an a-hole, would the Cons have any hesitation in turning any of that into a radio ad? They never let go of "Massagegate". They're not offended, they're on the offensive, trying to deflect away from both Bill C-30 and Toews hypocritical puritanism.
Dan Savage does horoscopes for NOW magazine in Toronto (among other things) and is usually a fun read.
Dan Savage is a long-time gay rights activist. He appears on both Canadian and American t.v. He and his partner got married in Canada and they live in Washington State with their son.
Toews should be thrown out of cabinet, but Harper would never do that. Conservatives are always hypocritical scumbags when it comes to family values. They voted against our gay marriage bill on the grounds that it threatened the sanctity of the marriage institution, and then they end up being caught degrading their own marriages.
Congratulations, Debater. We finally agree on an issue.
More seriously, I hope Twittering the Twit does not distract us from the issue of preserving internet privacy. The Conservatives have a habit of using anything they can to attack an opponent (see environment, Afghanistan detainees, veterans' pensions, gay rights, G20 protests and many others) through mudslinging. They have already begun on this issue by stating the NDP is behind the Twitter leak without the slightest evidence in an attempt to make this the issue rather than internet privacy. Lets make sure we keep the focus on this important right while having a momentary laugh at this hypocrite.
On CTV News about 20 minutes ago, Craig Oliver said "some people say the NDP is responsible for the posts about Toews", what is this, Fox News North? He knows that IP has been used by both Lib and Tory. I hate it when this guys do that. I would have expected a little better from him. Again, someone want to tell me why CTV is better then CBC?
You're right. When I saw the dollar totals, I assumed he was going to Hy's Steakhouse in Ottawa and dining on prime rib and fine wines. Then I saw that he was actually dropping hundreds of dollars at Winnipeg House of Pancakes. Who the hell can eat that many fucking pancakes??
I could, if there was enough butter and Syrup!
I get the feeling that it is the NDP that has the best case for defamation of character. There is no proof that the NDP was involved at all, yet the Tories keep repeating the allegation to the point where the man on the street (or woman for that matter) who doesn't pay close attention to events probably thinks that the NDP was behind this.
An affair, one's private business. Sleeping with a babysitter - creepy! It all makes me wonder what Anonymous could possibly have that can actually be worse than what is already out there.
Who would you like to have done it? I mean besides Toew's ex?
That made my day!!!
