Brian Topp answers babblers' questions February 22, 2:30 p.m. EST, 11:30 a.m. PST

Brian Topp is the next NDP leadership candidate to answer your questions, here on babble, on February 22nd, 2:30pm EST, 11:30am PST. Babblers were asked a while back to submit questions about his candidacy and his vision for Canada. You can find that thread here.

Please feel free to add more questions in this thread, give your approval of previous questions, and variously discuss Topp's upcoming appearance.

Todrick of Chat...

Mr. Topp, if you are selected as the next leader of the NDP and elected as the next Prime Minister of Canada will you do the following?

1. Nationalize all industries dealing with natural resources and place them under the control of the people of Canada?

2. Will you seize all former Crown Corporations and place them back under control of the people of Canada?

3. Will you ensure that no foreign government and business interests are never allowed to takeover Canada industries or companies?

4. Will you disband the Canadian Armed Forces? As a peaceful nation there is no need for a military force in Canada.

5. Will you force any industries in Canada to cease product of any material, equipment, products used in military applications?

6. Will you sure that any countries that Canada has bombed or invade (Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya) over the last 20 years are paid for the damages the Canada military/Government illegally inflicted on this peace nations.

Well, I'm glad I got mine in there early before the rush.

Har dee har har, SJ. Anyway, this is the NDP. We don't take questions from anarchists.

The deadline for questions is tonight, btw. So even though we have a slate to pick from these threads, perhaps babblers are interested in some up-to-date queries?

Sheesh. You don't ask for much, do you? Laughing

ETA: seriously, any leader we choose who goes into the next election promising what you ask for above will reduce the NDP to a handful of seats, if that many.

Okay folks, get your questions in before 9:30pm EST tonight.  After that, the question threads will be closed and the top 6-8 questions will be chosen by our staff.

KenS

Schaedules? Sheesh.

But I'm unclear. Is there another thread where questions are to be put?

I don't know why they wouldn't.  The NDP took less than a decade to raze social democracy.  If that's not a form of anarchism then you tell me.

From Murray Dobbin:

1) You will recall that almost 10 years ago there was a movement called the
New Politics Initiative, whose aim it was to bring the NDP and social/enviro
organizatins closer together to build a better Canada. It also aimed at
reinventing the NDP based on the model presented by its predecessor, the CCF
- a movement/party which would engage supporters and communities year round
and not just during elections. What was your position re: the NPI at the
time and do you share its broad objectives today?

2) Nathan Cullen has proposed that the NDP, Liberals and Greens co-operate
in the next election to ensure the defeat of Harper government - clearly the
most right-wing and anti-democratic government in Canada's history. That
co-operation would also lead to a coalition which would support electoral
reform - proportional representation. You have spoken against such
co-operation - yet many Canadians support it. The Leadnow.ca group polled
its 10,000 members an 95% supported the idea. Why do you oppose it?

3)Canada's foreign policy is now almost unrecognizable, particularly in the
Middle East. The Harper government has characterized the Iranian regime as
the biggest threat there is to world peace and seems poised to support an
Israeli-American attack on its nuclear facilities. If you were leader, wehat
would your position be?

From Unionist:

Anyway, out of fairness, I wanted to ask him the same question I'm asking other candidates:

Mr. Topp,

On April 27, 2010, the Speaker of the House held the Harper government in contempt of Parliament for refusing to hand over all the Afghan detainee documents.

As in the case of many other such scandalous actions, Harper emerged unscathed, and the issue disappeared from the radar.

What is at stake is Canada's possible complicity in torture and other war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Are you prepared to demand that all the documents be released to Parliament now - failing which, that you will publish them immediately when the NDP forms the government?
