Wow - Singh really is a prick. Good for Cullen in exposing him.

Idealistic Prag... Idealistic Pragmatist's picture

Truly bizarre question from Cullen to Singh about his remarks about Topp (what's the strategy there?), but interesting twist!

Howard

Cullen asked Singh point blank to apologise to Topp. Singh did not. He just said that he felt offended by Topp brushing him off on the tax question ("you can't have read my plan") and stood by his statement that Topp's tax policy did not call for an exemption on capital gains taxation for charitable giving.

flight from kamakura

cullen opportunistically slams singh, singh responds very very poorly.

Howard

Singh also addressed whether he was Mulcair's attack dog (despite this not being asked). He said, thank you all, but my ideas and debate strategies are mine alone.

socialdemocrati...

I just hate how much politics becomes a god damn hockey game to you guys. As if "Go Leafs Go" ever convinced a Habs fan to change over.

These exchanges have been pretty balanced and fair thus far. People have asked tough questions, and have gotten good answers.

Except Cullen to Singh. Singh should have apologized.

Oh wait...

Division! Division! Division!

I can't figure out which Smile

incredible that mulcair was asked the same question three times, in three different ways.  i wonder if they're not actually helping him.  dewar is just in way over his head.

It was a missed opportunity.

Unionist

Ashton says doctors, lawyers, professionals, and entrepreneurs have built this country. Really?

NorthReport

Singh doing quite well in the 3 member debate.

Aristotleded24

Niki sounds very Prime Ministerial, she's aiming her guns right at Harper. Clearly the most qualified of the candidates for leadership.

Howard

I thought Topp had a great opening statement. He talked about unity and Jack's letter. I would even say he was charming.

Tom handled them all well and you may be correct.

flight from kamakura

topp is having a great debate.  this 4-way exchange is going to be pretty friendly.

Howard

Dewar is acting really goofy today. Nash beat him to the mic in the open debate session and he did a bit of jig behind the podium. The tension seems kind of thick for the last debate.

NorthReport

Yaffe trying to create divisions.

flight from kamakura

ashton sounds bafflingly strident, just unmeasured.

dewar is hard to follow, nash lost an opportunity to speak, third time cullen has said "elephant in the room", topp is coming out well.

Yes, Niki did well with her opening remarks at the beginning of the 3 member debate

yeah. Topp is taking up a lot of space in the debate. It's a good job.

socialdemocrati...

Yaffe is asking for some contrasts on immigration, but I think the whole NDP is 99.999% consistent on this.

Howard

Dewar is having a hard time distinguishing himself today. This is NOT usually his problem. Cullen is saying/doing his own thing. It's almost like he's talking to himself because few candidates seem willing to take on his ideas, this time on challenging the professional associations to recognise more foreign credentials. Cullen raised this as well at a previous debate. Once again, few takers.

French question now...

jfb

I agree.

Peggy is having a good day as well.

Screw this translation crap - I want a bilingual channel.

socialdemocrati...

The translator is having a really hard time with Dewar's "French".

Oh Dewar...your French Cry

Or the NDP website.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Topp just gave Ashton a nice compliment for her excellent French response.

Oops - maybe it was to Yaffe???

flight from kamakura

just watch it on the ndp site, no translations.

topp is really doing well in this debate.  good answer by nash, very good answer by mulcair.  cullen and dewar answer poorly, singh too.  "new politics" ashton literally recites party policy.

Howard

Cullen makes an odd comment about the moderator's French being better than that of some candidates (and that being disappointing?). Yaffe made a flattered noise. Moment of zen of the debate Laughing

NorthReport

Did people see the lineups - I wonder what time people had to line up this morning to get in to the studio?

Tamarind

Nash is strong today, good response to Dewar clarifying that her "pooling resources" statement refers to working with Liberals and Greens interested in PR rather than Cullen-style cooperation.

NorthReport

Brian lacks charasma big time.

Peggy is not wasting time on others like Paul has done - she is going after the front-runner.

socialdemocrati...

Dewar asks Peggy Nash about "pooled resources" with other parties. Nash clarifies that: pooling resources on proportional representation.

Dewar tries to ask again, but her answer was already really clear. She adds that if the other parties want to support our agenda, why wouldn't we work with them?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm giivng this debate to Topp, then Nash, and third Mulcair.  I still think Mulcair will win the leadership. Topp is more user-friendly this time around. Big loser today is Singh followed by Dewar.

flight from kamakura

dewar flailing attacking nash, does her a very good turn.  nash hands an unintentional softball to mulcair that's unlikely to change any minds.

socialdemocrati...

Nash accepts Mulcair's response on "renewing" the party on the surface. But she points out that Mulcair keeps talking about modernizing language, and nothing else. She says modernizing language doesn't build movements, people do.

So Mulcair begins talking about organization. Having those organizations in place constantly, not just a few weeks before the election.

socialdemocrati...

I smell a softball question from Topp to Nash on natural resources.

Aristotleded24

I thought this debate was supposed to be about opportunities for young people and new Canadians? I'm disappointed that the candidates are instead going on their own agendas.

flight from kamakura

singh is a punching bag this time around.

HO! HO!  nash and topp showcasing their bonafides on mulcair's signature issue!

socialdemocrati...

Yaffe calls Topp on the softball question. So Topp takes another stab at it, says he was honestly trying to find a difference.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Brian Topp and Peggy Nash are getting along famously. I thought this was a debate? Laughing

Howard

Dewar: I haven't seen the plan from you. Nash: Stay tuned!

LOL. This is what Dewar said when Nash pressed him about his plan for a non-male unilingual Ontarian deputy leader.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Mulcair just lobbed Cullen a softball on environment.  Seeesh!

Yeah, I'm finding the strategy behind some of these exchanges absolutely fascinating. There are lots of different kinds of plays being made for the second-choice support of various candidates.

socialdemocrati...

Yeah, and Yaffe called Mulcair on that one too. Mulcair is taking another shot at it, but it seems like he'll get "violent agreement".

flight from kamakura

and now mulcair is trying to ride the debate out with a friendly exchange between cullen and mulcair.

TheArchitect

So far, I'd say Topp's doing best.  Then Nash, then Mulcair.

socialdemocrati...

Props to Nathan Cullen. He sought out some contrast: hinted that Mulcair wants carbon pricing to be put into general revenue, but Nathan wants that to be specifically for sustainability initiatives. "Not in general revenue" was the phrase I heard.
