Toronto-Danforth Byelection 6

...continued, post-election.

I chatted to a Liberal friend of mine who is quite connected to the Toronto brass.

He maintains that Gordon and Rae clashed quite a bit, particularly in the last few weeks of the campaign. Gordon sought out high profile Grits like Trudeau, Dion, Mahovolich and Bennett for campaign events while Rae wanted the show to surround him. Initially, all the flyers and billboards had Rae as the centrepiece.

Alas, Gordon being the "marketing wiz" shifted the campaign towards himself, and much to the chagrin of Rae and his hand-picked campaign team, took over the marketing arm by putting out some fairly unconventional and twitter-ridiculed literature.

Well, ridiculed by NDP members.  Which is to be expected.

I wasn't crazy about the stuff he was saying in the literature, but I'm a left-wing NDP supporter, so of course I wouldn't.  But I did think the literature was catchy and attention-grabbing and humorous.

I guess you missed his totally bizarre youtube entitled "Why I'm a Liberal" where he went on about not caring about winning hockey games and the importance of passing the puck...I'll bet those are exactly the reasons why Laurier, King and Trudeau chose the Liberal Party!

Did anyone else think that "We Want You Back" was, frankly, a really really CREEPY campaign slogan?

It made the Liberals sound like the political equivalent of ex-spouses-turned-stalkers.

Do you reckon Scott will get a big critic portfolio? Perhaps Foreign Affairs or Human Rights?

Stockholm

I don't think a rookie would get foreign affairs but maybe "International human rights" or maybe some urban issue.

Policywonk

When does Scott get sworn in?

They still love us and they say they've really changed these last few months... they respect we voters more as people now

I did. It made it sound like Bob Rae would beat you up a lot less now if you went back, promise!

I'm not sure how much worse Gordon could have done than pieces of literature reminding you that if you vote Liberal, you get Bob Rae.
