Catholic Education Week 2012

Happy Catholic Education Week 2012 (May 6-11)! God bless you premier McGuinty, Tim Hudak, and Andrea Horwath for upholding the Catholic faith above all others before and under Ontario law. You uphold Catholic school funding in the face of fiscal austerity in health care and education. You uphold this funding in the face of wage freezes for public sector employees.

Ontarians can wait a little longer for essential medical services, go without them altogether, or pay for them themselves -- if they have the means. Hospital expansions and renovations can wait. Communities with both a half empty public and a half empty Catholic school can close one or the other and ship half their kids elsewhere to go to school, rather than combining the two student bodies into the best of the two buildings. School maintenance backlogs, already on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars in some school boards, can grow for a few more years yet before the schools actually start to fall down. Doctors, nurses, teachers, and other public sector employees can handle a few years of wage freezes or sub-inflation increases. Our cities can learn to do more with less.

The important thing here -- the really important thing -- is that all Ontario taxpayers continue to fund the promulgation of Catholic religious beliefs to the 80-90% of Catholic families who use Catholic schools but do not go to Church. God bless all of our Members of Provincial Parliament for setting proper priorities and for ignoring the majority wish to move to a single public school system for each official language. That takes a truly breathtaking combination of callousness, insensitivity, and political cowardice. In Ontario, we are fortunate to have politicians with all of these qualities in spades.

If, like many of us, you believe the government's priorities to be royally messed up, help us to change things.

Visit www.OneSchoolSystem.org.  Send an email to [email protected] with your contact information, indicate that you support one school system for each official language, and indicate whether or not you want to be on our mailing list.  Follow us on Twitter @OneSchoolSystem.

Keep in touch with the issue on the One School System for Ontario Facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/2350871559/.

It is immoral and quite frankly unbelievable that the government is proceeding to cut or impose austerity on essential services while allowing a complete and utter non-essential, Catholic school funding, to survive.

It was a travesty that the Drummond Commission did not highlight what is probably the most significant example of "overlap and duplication" in Ontario today.  They had a mandate to identify “areas of overlap and duplication that could be eliminated to save taxpayer
dollars” (verbatim from the Commission web site).  They didn't just have a log in their eye -- it was a Sequoia.

Are the Greens still calling for an end to this travesty?

Wow. Am I glad I left Ontario for Quebec!

It's almost unbelievable that at a time when healthcare is on the chopping block, no one dares to even mention that every day tens of thousands of kids are bused past their nearest publicly funded school to get to the one with the "right" religion. No one dares to mention that this publicly funded school system has effectively banned GSAs (and "politically charged" rainbows!). No one dares to mention that if you're a Muslim and you live across the street from a Catholic elementary school, your child will have to go elsewhere -- even though you've paid for that school as much as your Catholic neighbour has. No one dares to mention that this situation has earned Canada 2 UN human rights condemnations. Nope. That would be in "poor taste".

This is Canada's dirty little secret.

Around two billion dollars each year are reserved for propping up this blatantly discriminatory and homophobic school system. How is this possible? How many new hospitals could we build each year instead?

Defenders of the status quo remind us that it's all about Section 93 of the Constitution, that this discrimination is somehow irretrievably entrenched. I remind them about how easy it was for Quebec to remove that same Constitutional yoke from itself in 1998 with a simple amending formula.

Seems that everyone in the province (including a surprisingly large number of Catholic school teachers who dare not speak out) sees the problem and the remedy. Everyone except McGuinty, Hudak and Horwath. I'm especially disappointed with the latter. (I can assure Andrea that not every graduate of Stoney Creek's Cardinal Newman Catholic high School is as courageously cowardly as she is.)

Special mention: Kudos to Mike Schreiner for finally coming out and doing the right thing.

If this were happening in Mississippi, you can be sure our politicians would fall over themselves to be the first to condemn the discrimination and the waste. But when the backwater is our own back yard it becomes a bit trickier, doesn't it, Dalton?

So, Happy Catholic Education Week, Ontario! The week culminates in what is usually a special day off for Catholic school kids where they will be bused to Parliament Hill for the "March for Life" where all of Canada can see how much our youth are apparently keen to take away a woman's right to choose. And all on the public dime. And the afternoon is free for the kids to go shopping in the Byward Market! It's just win-win for Ontario!

Your tax dollars hard at work.

Yes they are.  As a matter of fact, they only recently reaffirmed their support for a single public school system in Ontario.

Separation of Church and state and respect for the fundamental equality of all people seem to be areas where they are more advanced than us dinosaurs in Ontario.
