Winnipeg - Council lefties brace for right hook

The emergence of high-profile conservative and centrist candidates in city wards currently held by left-leaning councillors could change the complexion of the civic election.

The NDP faces the threat of losing two seats and Winnipeg's organized left may be forced to divert some of its ground game away from Judy Wasylycia-Leis' mayoral campaign.

First, what is a "centrist" and do any of these candidates qualify as such?  Most of them are Tories.

Second, I've been pondering exactly what the fuck went on with this civic election, especially given the 4 or 5 way fight for Harvey Smith's seat.  The whole concept of "lets have the left get behind one candidate so we don't split the vote" seemed to do an epic fail in Daniel Mac.  It just seems wierd that the WCC was supposed to be this bringing together of Liberals and NDPers (I've wasted evenings at both of their AGMs, and lets face it, that's always what it was), yet now the NDP is going it alone on candidate nominations and now Cindy Gilroy-Price, a Liberal and WCC founder, is running against two or three NDPers (I don't know what the deal with Cardoso is, only that he's using NDP colours on his ugly website).

What happened to the WCC and the NDP?  If I were an opportunist Liberal on the WCC and thinking they had an alliance with the NDP in the WCC, I would be upset that the NDP is divvying up the council seats amongst themselves.  Of course, if I were an opportunist Liberal in Manitoba, I would join the Manitoba NDP because it's pretty much the same thing and joining the Manitoba Liberals to get ahead is stupid, but that's another story.

This whole thing just seems wierd as fuck, and smells like a bit of a power play by the NDP brass for getting people they like in council seats and people they don't like (Harvey Smith) out.

I think this article shows just how desparate the right-wing faction is. They forgot to mention that Katz has been firmly in control of council, so it's not like he's had a hard time getting his agenda through. As for vulnerabilities, Daniel Mac might be vulnerable given the way the vote is being split, but the rest I don't see falling, especially St B where Vandal defeated Katz-backer Magnifico. After that, Orlikow is certainly the most vulnerable of the opposition councillors, but there are a couple of empty seats in the north that I think the NDP could take.

I think Katz feels like he's on the run. Let's go.

BTW Genstrike, I agree with your assessment of the WCC. I was considering joining them this year, but I'm glad I never got around to it. Instead, I'll be focusing on campaigning for specific individuals.

This campaign is getting dirty.

In River Heights, incumbent John Orlikow has about his opponent. Recently some traffic circles had been installed in the area, and there was some frustration. A group calling itself "Concerned Residents of River Heights" has been distributing pamphlets accusing Orlikow of being MIA on this issue. Orlikow has alleged that this is a front for his opponent Michael Kowalson.

It looks like that original article I discovered and posted back in September turned out to be accurate.

The right-wing forces prevailed in Winnipeg afterall, and Judy W-L was beaten by 12 points by Sam Katz.

Here's a thought:  why did the NDP focus so much on taking down Smith and leave Pagtakhan alone?  Would have been much better if they took him on instead.

This must have really made your day since you always seem to be rooting for whoever is the most rightwing candidate in every contest.

Wait, did Stockholm just call someone out for being right-wing?

It's the new progressive who experiences joy when the NDP loses. ABBNDP, or "anybody but the NDP" makes them glad 'n happy.

Generally good news out of Brandon, although it appears NDP stalwart, former federal NDP candidate and longtime council mainstay Errol Black lost re-election by a single vote.

Today Black's defeat was confirmed upon recount, with the margin of defeat spreading to 2 votes.

So a couple of years later, and what has been done on this front? Jack squat. It was really good of CUPE to issue their report card highlighting some issues and where council members stand on them. Unfortunatley, that's about all we have. The Citizen's Coalition still has as its main thing on the front page a report card from the 2010 municipal election. And Katz has mused about His popularity has dropped, and I believe along with it the bar that a challenger would need to clear in order to take him on and win, but the way things are going, there is still a very realistic chance that he could be re-elected. Why haven't we heard from anybody? From my end, there are only 2 candidates who I could see mounting a credible challenge to Sam Katz. Judy Wasylicia-Leis ran last time, and she could very well run again, especially if she learns from the mistakes of the last campaign. Problem is, I haven't seen much evidence that she's reaching out and networking beyond the traditional NDP-support base, or to phrase it differently, she's still running as if she's trying to win a safe north-end NDP seat as opposed to figuring out how to win over the swing voters and those who voted for Sam. Jenny Gerbasi could also run. She is one of the 2 opposition councillors who has been on council Katz' entire term, and she gets a great deal of air time in terms of speaking up against him. She knows city hall very well, which could actually hurt her in terms of people thinking we need "fresh blood." I also have doubts regarding her ability to win over swing suburban voters outside the NDP tent.

What's even stranger is that NDP-backed Brian Mayes won the St. Vital seat quite handily despite the fact that the NDP had never done well there municipally before. So it looks like the only way the left is going to win in Winnipeg will be to pick off these council spots one at a time.

Winnipeg police are investigating after ... questioning Sam's business deals are popping about the city. What to make of this? Is it anti-Semitic? Defamatory? Inciting hatred? Telling it like it is?

6079_Smith_W

$hitler? Cabal of cockroaches? Of course it's anti-Semitic.

Sorry, but if someone can't make a case through more conventional means posting shit like this on telephone poles is not the way to do it. But something tells me these people aren't really that interested in social justice anyway. Seems to me the only case they are concerned with has to do with race.

And I also don't see it going over all that well in Winnipeg.

Fair enough. This actually reminded me about how there was a protest at Winnipeg City Hall a few years back, and someone held up a poster comparing Katz to Hitler. Not that I condone such a tactic, but I was frustrated that the media focused on that poster (who was acting on his own) to the exclusion of what people were protesting.

Having said that, you're right, there's much better ways of making a case against Katz than resorting to anti-Semitism.

6079_Smith_W

Exactly. That's what these fuckers count on. And no, the media should not be ignoring real scandal.

Maybe the 'Council Lefties' if there are such things, should consider doing something about the little matter of Canada's continuing genocide in Winnipeg? Why is Canada still stealing the children?
