Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza again -- November 2012

UN considers emergency meeting on Israeli military action in Gaza

The UN Security Council is meeting tonight to consider an Egyptian request for an emergency meeting on Israel's military action in Gaza.

The closed-door meeting comes in response to a letter from Egyptian Ambassador Muutaz Khalil.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released statements saying he had spoken to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi about "the worrisome escalation of violence in southern Israel and Gaza and the need to prevent any further deterioration."

He also said he had talked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyau to express concern about "an alarming escalation of indiscriminate rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and the targeted killing by Israel of a Hamas military operative in Gaza."

Israel killed Hamas commander Ahmad Jabari in one of some 20 airstrikes on the Gaza Strip Wednesday, the heaviest barrage on the Palestinian territory in four years in retaliation for renewed rocket fire on southern Israel.

Gaza's health minister said 10 people were killed — two of them young children — while the Israeli military said its attack was just the beginning of a major offensive and warned it could escalate with a ground attack.

Nous accusons: Mainstream media fails to report on atrocities against Gaza

While countries across Europe and North America commemorated military casualties of past and present wars on November 11, Israel was targeting civilians.

On November 12, waking up to a new week, readers at breakfast were flooded with heart rending accounts of past and current military casualties. There was, however, no or little mention of the fact that the majority of casualties of modern day wars are civilians. There was also hardly any mention on the morning of November 12 of military attacks on Gaza that continued throughout the weekend.

NDP: Reaction to the Situation in the Middle East

New Democrats are very concerned by the recent escalation of tensions in Gaza and Israel. We call on all sides to exercise restraint and respect international humanitarian law obligations to protect civilians at all times.  Escalation would be dangerous and detrimental to prospects for long-term peace and stability in the region.

We are monitoring the situation closely and continue to call on the Canadian government to pursue a balanced and constructive approach in the Middle East.

EMERGENCY RALLY: GAZA UNDER ISRAELI ATTACK!

5 PM - Thursday November 15 2012
Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson Side)
Hornby and Robson Sts - Vancouver
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/176975062442952/

Israel is once again attacking Gaza. Nearly four years after the devastating Operation Cast Lead, Israeli forces are declaring their plans for a "ground invasion" of Gaza while engaging in massive bombing raids.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Gaza have suspended classes in all schools and universities across Gaza.  The death toll is increasing, and rapidly. More than 9 people have been confirmed dead, including Ranan Arafat, a 4 year old girl.

Israel extrajudicially assassinated  Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari this morning and the bombs keep dropping as Israel announces it is calling up its military reserves.

So far the Canadian government is silent yet has repeatedly affirmed its support for Israeli occupation and apartheid.

Come out to demand an end to the attacks on Gaza and justice for Palestine!

Is anyone really surprised that our government is with Israel?

The Harpercons love that terrorist state.

Funny how all this stuff follows days after the American election with Israel once again instigating war at the inevitable expense of the U.S. and ,nowadays,Canada.

Not surprisingly the MSM are reporting it this way ;

http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/rockets-fired-at-tel-aviv-as-gaza-conflict-w...

In contrast,this is what MSM DOESN'T want you to see ;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFmoplmrR3o&feature=g-all-c

If you get all your news from MSM (as the vast majority of people do) no wonder a war mongering terrorist like Netanyahoo and his minions and enablers get so much unquestioned support and sympathy.

And this is why Palestinians will likely forever continue to be slaughtered and oppressed without so much as a wimper from the world.

Do you mean Twitter? The IDF and the Al Qassam brigades were tweeting back and forth at each other (which is rather surreal) but since they were both making threats against each other, that violates the terms of service and both briefly had their accounts suspended.

Israeli officials have asked their own citizens NOT to post about where Hamas rockets are hitting in Israel because doing so could help Hamas better aim their missiles. I don't know if they've contacted Facebook about this

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

What does that even mean, Catchfire?

It means that posts which use the word "Gaza" have not been showing up on individuals' walls or news feeds. I haven't seen this myself, only seen other people report it.

Solomon had the Israeli ambassador on the day before, and challenged her the same way he challenged the Egyptian ambassador. In my view, the israeli ambassador was less convincing - and she was more strident and more intolerant. The Egyptian ambassador did a good job, clearly frustrated by the misinformation that's out there.

MegB

I agree.  The Israeli ambassador seemed less credible to me (but that might be my personal bias), but I was mightily impressed by Egypt's ambassador.  His responses to Solomon's questions were reasoned, articulate and more direct than one generally expects from diplomats.

I always thought it must be because they had no F-16s...

Israel Encourages Palestinian Rocket Attacks

http://sott.net/article/253631-Israel-Encourages-Palestinian-Rocket-Attacks

"...the rocket attacks are the Palestinians ONLY way of protesting against the 60 year long occupation of their land responding to unprovoked Israeli attacks and murder of Palestinian civilians. Think about that. The Palestinians have no option, no appeal to the international community because no one listens.

The Palestinians have two choices: they can sit quietly by and allow the IDF to arbitrarily and summarily murder them, or they can fire primitive rockets at the closest targets Israel and hope that they make the Israeli government think twice..."

Quote:

Local activists organized a rally condemning the recent Israeli bombardments of Gaza on Thursday evening, in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The rally drew a crowd of hundreds of supporters, chanting, “End the occupation now.  Free, free Palestine.”

Emcee Omar Shaban from the student-run Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, kicked off the event and introduced the ensuing speakers for the night.

In his speech, Hanna Kawas, one of the speakers and Chairperson of the Canada Palestine Association, mentioned the role of Canadian companies in supplying Israel with weapons that are used to attack Palestinians.  “Enough is enough.  Mr. Harper, stop supporting Israeli aggression,” he said.

Kawas hopes the Canadian public will support the Palestinian people and be aware of Canada’s role in the conflict.

Fatima Elmasry, a high school student who heard about the event through Facebook, says she came to the rally because she’s worried about her relatives in Gaza and upset about the situation on the ground.

...
Quote:

In a show of solidarity, the Vancouver Chapter of Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) showed up holding a banner.  IJV is a national organization that takes an independent line from the Canadian Jewish Congress and from Benjamin Netanyahu, and is anti-occupation and pro-Palestinian.

“We oppose colonialism wherever it exists – the Israeli occupation of Palestine, [which is] comparable to the Canadian occupation of Native People’s lands,” says Martha Roth, a member of IJV.

There were almost a dozen speeches made, as well as a poetry reading and singing.

Leila Khalaf sang the Palestinian resistance song, ‘Onadekom (Calling You),’ which calls for people to join in the fight against occupation.  Khalaf says that this song is always sung whenever there is war going on in the country.

The rally lasted for an hour and a half, culminating in a march that took the group down Robson, Burrard and Georgia Streets.

"Netanyahu - this is one desperate demagogue."

Webster Tarpley interviewed

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Ahmed Jabari was a subcontractor, in charge of maintaining Israel's security in Gaza. This title will no doubt sound absurd to anyone who in the past several hours has heard Jabari described as "an arch-terrorist," "the terror chief of staff" or "our Bin Laden." But that was the reality for the past five and a half years. Israel demanded of Hamas that it observe the truce in the south and enforce it on the multiplicity of armed organizations in the Gaza Strip. The man responsible for carrying out this policy was Ahmed Jabari.

Now Israel is saying that its subcontractor did not do his part and did not maintain the promised quiet on the southern border. The repeated complaint against him was that Hamas did not succeed in controlling the other organizations, even though it is not interested in escalation. After Jabari was warned openly (Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff reported here at the beginning of this week that the assassination of top Hamas people would be renewed), he was executed on Wednesday in a public assassination action, for which Israel hastened to take responsibility. The message was simple and clear: You failed - you're dead.

Via CSMonitor ("Is Hamas responsible for Gaza rocket fire? Not exactly.")

Israel has embarked, with its Gaza attack, on the all-too-well-known elections routine. Before the 2009 elections, the defense minister, Ehud Barak, who then led the Labor party, saw his party performing poorly in the national polls. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert needed some public support as well, and they launched operation “Cast Lead.” It was during Hannukah, and the chosen name provoked famous holiday children song, and an awful name of a vastly used material (lead).

With the 2013 elections just months away, Barak sees polls for his now rapidly vanishing party sending him to early retirement, and just like in Hanukkah 2008, Israel decided to break a ceasefire and assassin the Hamas senior military persona, Ahmad Jaberi. Hamas, as expected, responded with firing rockets on Israel’s southern regions, and to the great satisfaction of both Hamas and Israel, a full-scale war is being evolved.

Netanyahu knows his constituency very well. He knows that the way to ensure his victory in the upcoming elections will be by diverting the public discourse from demands of social justice to existential threats imposed on Israel by the bogeyman- Hamas, And the cost of imperiling a third of Israel’s population seems reasonable enough for him. When virtually no opposition seen in miles, Netanyahu cemented his dreadful leadership for the next four years. It is not that Netanyahu faced a serious challenge in the Israeli political arena.

Israel’s leadership has proven once again that fear production is the best way to secure the public support. It is much easier to disseminate, cheaper and far less demanding than social and economic reforms, and of course, self perpetuating, thus much more sustainable than hope, for say.

It's not about having a Gandhi...just somebody in the leaderships of all three players(Israel, West Bank, Gaza)that isn't a bloodthirsty, life-hating maniacal bastard.  None of the leaders of any of these factions gives a flying fuck about the people they are supposedly representing...it's just about ego and having the ability to say "we won and they lost"(the five most useless words on the planet).

"They stole my land,

burnt my olive trees,

destroyed my house,

took my water,

bombed my country,

imprisoned my father,

killed my mother,

took my job,

starved us all,

humilitated us all,

But I am to blame: I shot a rocket back.

So they stole more of my land,

burnt my olive trees,

destroyed my house,

took my water,

bombed my country..."
