Heh Boom Boom.  You're such a troll. :D  (I mean that in the most affectionate way, of course!)

I do my best. Innocent

It's about time. Very many American companies want to do business with Cuba. And Cuba will always be a natural-geographical trading partner with the mainland.

Ken Burch

Well, it is at least theoretically possible.  Obama has been re-elected and therefore has nothing personally to lose by standing up to the Miami gusanos(including HRC's sister-in-law and her family)...so he COULD make the break.  But the forces of inertia are so hard to defy in D.C., so, like a lot of others, I'm not holding my breath.

It's a good time to revive the normalization movement in the U.S., though.  You could make a case for ending the embargo as an anti-recession measure and, now that the election is over, even some Republicans in export states might be open to normalization.

It's possible that at least part of the GOP fixation with NOT avoiding the "fiscal cliff" is simply to hobble Obama at the very beginning of his second term and make even slight change on this issue impossible.  After all, if the Miami Cubans can be successfully defied on the embargo, their grip on Florida politics would be weakened or even broken entirely...and if it is, Florida's electoral votes get closer to unreachibility for the 'Pugs, which comes closer and closer to making it impossible for them to regain the presidency anytime soon...which ALSO makes it easier to argue for third-party Left politics on the presidential level, for those who still think that is worth pursuing.

The entire poltiical order in the U.S. may, in the end, hinge on this issue.

Ken Burch

The best thing Cuba itself could do to help this would be to continue the process of becoming less repressive...the fewer the acts of censorship, the fewer incidents of repression of LGBT people(which have been lessening and which need to keep lessening), and the lesser the degree of regimentation within Cuba, the harder it becomes for right-wing types in the U.S. to push for preserving the status quo.

And none of these things would jeopardize either Cuban security OR the preservation of the socialist elements of Cuban life.  The greatest step forward for the cause of social and economic equality in Cuba would be the readjustment of who does and does not hold power within that country...the more power is transferred to the people themselves, to run life from below, the greater the vitality of the socialist project...not privatization, but democratic workers' control of the means of production(this is the time to pretty much end any of the bureaucratic character of Cuban socialism and bring the participatory sector even MORE to the fore).   More debates, fewer uniforms...THAT is the key,

Unionist

Speaking of repression in Cuba, it might at least show a little respect to mention Guantanamo Bay. Obama, who allegedly has nothing to lose, could now keep his first-term promise a few years late? Maybe he could even give it back to Cuba? Maybe he could end the embargo?

Cuba has no lessons to learn when faced with the greatest lawbreakers in the world. On the contrary, we should step up our solidarity so that the intense pressure to cancel their revolution and their independence might be slightly alleviated.

Ken Burch

Agreed, Guantanamo should be closed down and returned to Cuban control.  I've said that MANY times in the past.  And I've also said that everything my country has ever done to Cuba was indefensibly evil.

I am in solidarity with Cuba...but solidarity does NOT mean unquestioning support.  We should all have learned our lesson on THAT one from those who were in "solidarity" with Uncle Joe back in the day.   The Left is still struggling to recover from that mistake.

Support, yes.  But not blind support of everything...not support of what isn't necessary.  Cuba has nothing to lose now from trusting its own people to support the state voluntarily.

A friend and his wife recently returned from a Cuba holiday - they said it was awesome, and couldn't believe how cheap it was. Actually cheaper to fly round trip to Cuba and back than it is to fly from here to Sept-Iles one-way (he's a retired pilot - maybe he knew where to look for deals). But that was on Air Canada, the nation's worse labour enemy. Did everything by computer, including check-in at the airports.

I wish that Americans would stop telling other people what they should do. The only thing exceptional about the USA is its brutal killing machine that is unheralded in the annuls of history.  Please Ken fix your own fucking country that is terrorizing the world before you worry about other countries problems. Problems that pale in comparison to the most repressive society on the planet.  The largest and most active  military, the most prisoners per capita plus some of the most repressive labour laws and constant harassment of women and gays by well connected Xians.

I do work to try to change my country, and agree with everything you say about it.  And it's not as if I was asking the Cubans to unilaterally disarm, for God's sake.

Bacchus

Cool So telling the americans what to do is ok though?  Its just his opinion krop, just like everyone else here who says what should be done with this or that issue.

ryanw

all threads should divert their focus to solving american militarism

I also enjoy dragging needles over records when the party is in full swing

Of course telling bullies to stop beating people up is the same as the bully demanding other kids turn over their lunch money. Its all just talk and one should not bring anything like moral equivalency into ones analysis.  At babble we try not to give voice to the oppressors world view because frankly that is the MSM's job.  Sorry if you don't see that American Exceptionlism or Imperialism (whichever term you prefer) is the most repressive and murderous regime on the planet. (I'm just going with statistical evidence on)

Quite frankly the idea that in 2012 someone would refer back to the 1930's to show that we have to be careful about how we view Cuba because of Stalin I found to to be less than respectful to the people of Cuba who have been bullied for over 50 years by the most powerful nation in the planet.  Gee their form is bad in how they oppose repression and deal with the ongoing decade after decade attempt by the USA to force regime change. I'm one of the older posters on this board and Ken is talking about something that happened 15 to 20 years before I was born and claiming it is somehow relevant to Cuba in this millennium. By the way I think Stalin oversaw the second most repressive regime on the planet. Even he couldn't kill and pillage like the good old US of A since it has been in a league of its own for a very long time.

My country's government is the bully.  I, personally, am not the bully.

Nothing I posted was the equivalent of bullying...and none of it would weaken Cuba against the oppressor.

And I support the end of the embargo even if none of the exceedingly mild suggestions I made were ever to be implemented.

It doesn't have to be unquestioning support OR total hostility.

kropotkin1951

In a thread entitled celebrate 54 years of the Cuban revolution you posted an American's view of how they should not be so repressive.  And I did not say you were the bully only that you live in the bully country and choose to tell others how they should change to fit your world view better.  That is not quite my idea of a celebration Ken.

Ken Burch

I do celebrate the survival of the Revolution...nothing I posted was meant to spoil the celebration.

The only reason I posted what I posted was to help Cuba take away weapons FROM the bully...not to assist the bully.

And I'm a little surprised that a person posting under the name of a famous anarchist would object to my calling for things(which I also call for in my own country)that draw, at least somewhat, from the anarchist tradition.

Finally, I wasn't meaning to suggest that anyone today is a Stalinist...just that there are certain habits of mind that derive from the past that the Left needs to break itself from.  Cuba in 2012 is NOT the Soviet Union in 1935, and I truly apologize for wording my posts so as to make people think that that was what I was implying.

Unionist

Ken, we've been having this same conversation for years. Just to be clear, the following examples are NOT ones that you have used. I'm just using them for the sake of elucidation.

It is not for you, or me, to reflect publicly on how the Afghans should treat women better and maybe they'd get more international support against being invaded and occupied. Or how Palestinians would do better with some nice socialist government than Hamas, and oh, they shouldn't fire rockets because it pisses off potential supporters. Or how maybe indigenous folks shouldn't blockade bridges or highways or railway lines.

Celebrating the Cuban revolution, to me, means looking for ways to show concrete solidarity, promotion, assistance, on the terms of the Cubans themselves. Not on the terms of what I think would best serve their interests. They've done a way better job winning and consolidating independence in the face of imperialist onslaught than I could ever have done. I have no lessons to teach them.
