One smalls step for Monkey's, one giant step for monkeykind.

In related news Canada's Minister of Forgien Affair's asks Iran when Prime Minister Steven Harper will be returning from the space mission :D .

Poor monkey must have been terrified. American and Soviet spacecraft used monkeys as well back in the 1950s I think. Seems cruel to me, but so is probably almost all animal research nowadays.

Michelle

It is cruel, as is all animal research, unfortunately.  And yes, you're right - the Americans, Soviets, and French did it too.

While I don't like the idea of using animals for this sort of thing, I'm also not very impressed with the tone of the commentary I saw over the past week about this Iranian monkey space experiment.  I felt like it had a racist edge to it - the idea that it was somehow especially brutish for the Iranians to do such a thing.  This, of course, in a climate of media hype and American/Canadian/Western/Israeli demonization of Iran.

Slumberjack

It wouldn't be so bad if the media disseminated a wide variety of propaganda. That way we could pick and choose. Unfortunately they only ever spoon out one flavour of pabulum.

On CNN: Hundreds of US research chimps to be retired. That was just the headline - no details on where the chimps will retire to.

This is the space monkey. I don't think it looks very happy.

Michelle

I don't think any animals used for research look very happy.

Esther Pinder

Well be snarky if you like dear but we are talking about this specific animal, not any animal.

I did animal experiments in university on behaviour modification in the 1970s - that turned me off using research animals forever.

The pic is really upsetting me. The ordeal is so upsetting. Its not funny to me at all.

I wasn't being snarky.  I was just making a statement about animals being used in research - happens all the time, and it's terrible.

And I'm not your "dear".  Speaking of snarky.

I wish Iran...or China, the US, Russia, France...anyone with space vehicles...would send the Harper cabinet into space.

Spare the monkey, send Harper instead, unlike Harper the Monkey's too evovled to be treated like this.
