And then, on Friday, the SUV with the giant addiction problem seen in the photo above appeared outside the hearings. "Quick Fix" is an art installation by engineer Hugh Patterson. It took six weeks and three recycled 55-gallon steel oil barrels -- two originally containing industrial cutting fluid, and one for jet fuel -- along with other art scrapes to pull the provocative piece together, Patterson told The Tyee.

Here's what else Patterson had to say about the piece:

"This work was born from my own struggle to come to terms with my relationship with oil, the carbon economy and how to speak my heart and mind in a way that would be heard.

Global List of Fracking Bans and Moratrium

Canada  (we really need to add more jurisdictions to this list!!!)

  • British Columbia
  • First Nations people in NW British Columbia enacted a four year moratorium against drilling for natural gas by Royal Dutch Shell in the Sacred Headwaters. Members of the Tahltan First Nation are blockading Shell’s coal bed methane project in the Sacred Headwaters, the birthplace of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers.
  • Nova Scotia
  • Nova Scotia citizens call for ban on Nova Scotia fracking. Graham Hutchinson says the province should impose a moratorium on the controversial practice. The group recently presented a petition to Energy Minister Charlie Parker calling for a ban.
  • Québec
  • March 17, 2011: Nathalie Normandeau, Quebec’s natural resources minister, announced Wednesday that the province would no longer authorize hydraulic fracturing operations in the province in the hunt for oil and gas.

Oil tankers, not pipelines, are the hot potato issue

quote:

“Up until now, crude oil supertankers have not entered B.C.’s inside coastal passage because of concerns about oil spills. Ottawa is now considering allowing crude oil supertankers to transport crude oil through these waters. Do you support or oppose allowing crude oil supertankers through B.C.’s inside coastal waters?”

The results? 22 per cent support and 66 per cent oppose, including 50 per cent who strongly oppose. Only 11 per cent strongly support.

Another way of looking at it: If the researcher asks British Columbians about pipelines, about 50 per cent are relatively tolerant right now. If the researcher asks about pipelines and supertankers, tolerance diminishes....

Burrard Inlet First Nation calls for renewables

Vancouver summit planned to explore clean energy alternatives in face of unprecedented expansion of oil and gas industry in B.C

Faced with a six-fold increase in oil tanker traffic in their Burrard Inlet home if Kinder Morgan's pipeline expansion project goes ahead, the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation says it's time for Metro Vancouver and British Columbia to get serious about alternative energy.

And to drive the point home, the Tsleil-Waututh, whose community sits directly across the inlet from Kinder Morgan's Westridge oil export terminal, are organizing a summit in Vancouver later this spring that they say is a call to action on exploring clean energy alternatives to oil....

Environment commissioner’s farewell audit screams the obvious

quote:

He pointed to Canada’s lack of preparedness for a major offshore oil spill on its east coast and warned of a potential 300 per cent jump in tanker traffic on the west coast.

He reminded us the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 spilled 4.9 million barrels of oil and the clean-up and other costs of civil damages has hit $40 billion.

In Canada, the corporate liability for such spills is $30 million on the east coast, and the liability for the nuclear industry is $75 million and has not been updated in more than 35 years, something Vaughan called “pretty shocking.” The liability limit in the U.S. for a nuclear accident is $12 billion....

February 12, 2013 Albany, NY —

Instead of caving to pressure from oil and gas industry lobbyists, the State will allow experts the time they need to study health impacts associated with fracking, before new regulations are finalized. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a controversial technique in which gas drillers blast millions of gallons of water mixed with toxic chemicals into the ground to extract gas from hard-to-reach deposits deep in the earth.

Julie-Anne Blackpen:  Whale Tales-  Intersections of Undersea Oppression

Through stories of orca’s, I hope to explore some of my questions.
I have no answers, only a lot of questions, and a few ideas.

What responsibilities do we share with non-domesticated, indigenous non-humans?
How is the animal - lib movement connected to anti-capitalist & anti-colonial resistance?
Conscious of the damages of representing struggles outside of our experiences, how can the autonomy of non-humans be acknowledged through our organizing?

Julie Anne makes mischief on the Large Island, Traditional Lekwungen Territories.
Her workshop will try to be a horizontal & anti-oppressive space.

Mya Mayhem and Tim Rusmisel:  Intersections of Oppression and Why Animals Are Excluded from Many Liberation Struggles

Oppression is something that many beings face, regardless of race, color, gender, sexual orientation or species. Why is it that animals are so often left out of radical liberation struggles? Join Mya Mayhem and Tim Rusmisel as they facilitate a discussion about how anarchist, feminist, environmental and other struggles are intertwined and how we can move towards uniting in the fight for total liberation.

Mya Mayhem and Tim Rusmisel are passionate vegan straightedge anarach@-feminist activists who have been dedicated to total liberation struggles for over a decade.

Pipe dreams: A look at Canada’s six leading pipeline proposals

Pipelines are to a landlocked oil economy what supply lines are to invading armies: critical to success but vulnerable to attack.

Canada’s prairie oil producers – led by Alberta but including Saskatchewan and now Manitoba – have been wildly favoured in geology but less so in geography. While the provinces are enjoying a boom in production from oil sands and new light oil prospects, they are located far from the massive refining hub on the U.S. Gulf Coast, and far from ocean ports that would allow them to reach energy-hungry customers overseas.

quote:

Climate change battles heating up in the U.S.

Government and industry are now frantically looking for options. Companies are pursuing a series of pipeline projects through the U.S. and moving west and east in Canada. Recently, they have talked about ambitious plans to use rail cars and river barges to get their oil to market – even shipping crude by rail to Alaska to reach the Pacific.

But their pipe dreams have drawn fierce opposition from environmentalists and some first nations communities, and the regulatory process has at times bogged down.

The current lack of pipeline access is exacting an enormous cost on Canada, and especially Alberta, by driving down the price that Canada reaps for its oil, the country’s most valuable export by far. Alberta has long depended on central Canada and the middle of the United States as its oil markets. But those regions are now saturated with crude from booming North American production, and the glut has driven down prices.

That in turn has blown a $6-billion hole in the province’s budget, and will result in lower corporate tax revenues for Ottawa.

As protesters flooded Washington this weekend to demand President Barack Obama turn down a proposal to build a major pipeline through the U.S. heartland to the Houston-area refineries, Alberta politicians and industry officials were scrambling to promote other export pipelines, and even rail links....

BREAKING: Ohio Residents Shut Down Fracking Waste Storage Facility

Matamoros, OH, 10:00 am. Good morning!  Along with Earth First! and other environmental groups, we have stopped truck traffic at the Greenhunter fracking waste facility in Matamoros, Washington County, along the Ohio River.

Nate Ebert, a 33-year-old Athens County resident and member of Appalachia Resist!, ascended a 30 foot pole anchored to a brine truck in the process of unloading frack waste, preventing all trucks carrying frack waste from entering the site.

Over one hundred supporters gathered at the facility, protesting Greenhunter’s plans to increase capacity for toxic frack waste dumping in Ohio. Greenhunter is seeking approval from the Coast Guard to ship frack waste across the Ohio River via barge at a rate of up to half a million gallons per load. The Ohio River is a drinking source for more than 5 million people, including residents of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Test results from multiple frack waste samples reveal high levels of benzene, toluene, arsenic, barium, and radium, among other carcinogenic and radioactive chemicals....

Canada's Ambassador Suspects Obama Will Approve Keystone If He Applies 'Rational Reasoning'

http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/sunnews/politics/archives/2013/02/20130218-...

"...He's a rational, logical person. I believe that the rationale for having Canadian oil and North Dakota and Montana oil going on a pipeline instead of on trucks and trains to the Gulf Coast is logical,' Doer said in a weekend interview with Platts Energy Week TV.

Doer, a former NDP premier of Manitoba also slammed the US media for its Keystone coverage.

'Twenty people protesting do get more attention in the media than the 65% of Americans that prefer to get their oil from Canada rather than Venezuela or the Middle East,' Doer said. 'When you look at it, public opinion supports it."

kropotkin1951

Great to see a former NDP Premier slamming Venezuela.  God damn those socialist governments.

Has Mulcair ever criticized Doer publicly? Doer is such an embarrassment he should be stripped of his NDP membership - if he still has one. As for Mulcair - get with the fucking program and start challenging Doer any way you can.

ETA: Not likely, given this:

Mulcair, in contrast, pursued more centrist themes in his campaign. Mulcair cited the Third Way government of Gary Doer in Manitoba as the model he wished to emulate. He repeatedly criticized the NDP for ‘outdated’ language and told the Globe and Mail unlike other candidates (particularly Topp), he would not be ‘beholden’ to unions. In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Mr. Mulcair recounted how he informed the Canadian national director of the Steelworkers, Ken Neumann, that he opposed a reserved voting block for unions at the NDP leadership convention in March:

More Oil Spill Risk and Less Coastguard Means Moving From ‘Dumb to Dumber’

VANCOUVER -- Yesterday, the Kitsilano Coast Guard station was abruptly shut down. Vancouver residents have repeatedly voiced their concerns about this proposal since it was first announced by the Harper Government, but no date for the closure had been announced.

“With Kinder Morgan’s proposal to massively expand exports of diluted bitumen through Vancouver’s already bustling harbour, this is an irresponsible move,” said Ben West, Tar Sands Campaign Director with ForestEthics Advocacy. “It was already really dumb for Prime Minister Harper to consider turning Vancouver’s harbour into an export terminal for dangerous tar sands oil, but to simultaneously close Vancouver’s Coast Guard station is a move from dumb to dumber.”

The Vancouver Coast Guard was called on over 300 times a year to respond to emergencies and has saved hundreds of lives. Kinder Morgan’s proposal would increase traffic from the current 80 tankers a year to over 400 tankers should it be approved. Each one of these tankers would carry three times as much oil as was spilled by the Exxon Valdez....

#IDLENOMORE IN SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TODAY, FEB. 21st, 2013.

"FREE SPEECH at Utah State Capitol! Governor Herbert ordered it removed, troopers say it stays!" - Peaceful Uprising.

"THESE PEOPLE [WHO MINE THE TAR SAND] HAVE AN LOW SPIRITUAL I.Q." - ELDER FRANCOIS PAULETTE. #IDLENOMORE IN THE UTAH STATE CAPITAL TODAY. NATIVE AMERICAN ROUND DANCE PROTEST HITS THE CAPITOL Elder Francoise Paulette, an indigenous Canadian activist who has campaigned against the tar sands mining that has devastated his homeland brought a message to Utah officials who have approved the first tar sands mine in Utah and the nation. “People that are raping the land and people that are destroying the land—I see these people as having a very low spiritual IQ,” Paulette said. The Idle No More protest brought Paulette to the Utah State Capitol where more than 75 people rallied and joined in a traditional round dance in the capitol rotunda. The event was organized by activist groups Peaceful Uprising, the Utah Tar Sands Resistance and Before it Starts. In January state regulators gave the go ahead for the approval of the first tar sands mine in Utah and the nation, on land adjacent to the scenic Book Cliffs in eastern Utah. The permitting for the mine did not require a full-blown groundwater test, which advocates say is disturbing since the mining process is new to Utah and the nation, as City Weekly reported in 2012. Tar sands mining in Alberta, Canada has massively scarred the land and contaminated the water, albeit through a different extraction process than is to be used in the Utah operation. Paulette regardless sounded a warning. “Our people, especially the [women] that are expecting are told not to drink the water from the river, not to eat the fish from the river, not to eat the moose that are living along the river,” Paulette said. “We have never experienced this in our entire in our entire history.” Since tar sands mining has wreaked havoc with the land that Paulette’s tribe of 30,000 in northern Canada has lived on for generations, he has taken to travelling the world and speaking out against tar sands mining and rallying opposition. “My friends, all the people that work in this building, the politicians, your church people, the traditional people, the people that pray, the indigenous people, the people that love and care for nature—you must come together,” Paulette said. http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/blog-25-9124-native-american-round-dance-protest-hits-the-capitol.html

Enbridge Line 9 Energy Board Info Night

This was the first National Energy Board info night in Montreal, last Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, regarding the Enbridge Line 9 pipeline reversal and pressure increase. Line 9 runs from Sarnia Ontario to Montreal Quebec. The evening was meant to explain the Harper government's new "streamlined" environmental review process. Instead of a presentation and question period participants were forced to ask NEB representatives questions in small groups.

The message was clear; you are not welcome to participate in the hearings unless you are, in their opinion, "directly affected" by the project. They rely exclusively on industry provided safety reports, and the NEB board of directors is made up of former oil industry employees.

Shame on the NEB, shame on the savage oil capitalists, shame on the Harper Government for giving them unrestricted access to our environment, our resources, and to our public institutions.

Robyn Allan talk March 27

Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE) is hosting a talk by economist Robyn Allan on Wednesday, March 27, 6:30 p.m. at the Confederation Centre, 4585 Albert St., in Burnaby. Allan, an expert witness at the hearings into Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline proposal, will speak on the economics behind oil companies' energy strategy. Both Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan's proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline are aimed at supplying export markets with oil sands bitumen from Alberta. BROKE is raising concerns about the oil tanker traffic that will result—more than a supertanker per day in Burrard Inlet alone. "Until we have a sensible conversation as a country about how we best develop our oil resources in a socially, fiscally and environmentally responsible way for the benefit of all Canadians—and what that looks like in terms of pipeline capacity—we’re going to continue to be bombarded by these unnecessary oil pipeline proposals," said a BROKE press release. Allan will explain "why saying “no” to these pipelines not only benefits the growth and development of B.C.’s economy, but all of Canada—including Alberta."

Day of Action against Chevron and the Pacific Trail Pipeline

American oil giant Chevron wants to build a destructive pipeline across unceded indigenous territory to carry fracked gas to the coast, and export climate change to the world. We say NO. We do not need fracked gas, we do not want another pipeline and we will not stand by as colonial governments and greedy corporations push us over the climate catastrophe cliff edge.

Chevron is the new corporate face of the Pacific Trail Pipeline project, having recently become 50/50 partners with Apache to build a fracking gas pipeline across 500 kilometres of largely unceded land, from Summit Lake to LNG plants planned for Kitimat. On March 30th we will greet them with resistance across BC and around the world. As politicians put economic growth and industry interests ahead of carbon common sense and indigenous rights, it is up to us to take direct action to raise the cost of pushing ahead with the project, and raise the stakes in the PR battle. We encourage autonomous creative direct action against Chevron and any others involved in the development and financing of Pacific Trail Pipeline. Occupy offices, drop banners, demonstrate in city centres, lock-on at the pumps, subvert the Chevron brand, hand out leaflets… the choice is yours!....

Pete McMartin: Global warming’s new frightening deadline

In April 2009, the science journal Nature published a paper entitled Greenhouse-Gas Emission Targets for Limiting Global Warming to 2 C.

Its subject was the end of the modern world.

At the time, it attracted little notice. It was a half-dozen pages long. For laymen, its technical content was impenetrable.

The purpose of the paper — researched and written by a team of European scientists headed by Malte Meinshausen, a climatologist with Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact — was to determine just how much time mankind had left before our burning of fossil fuels would cause catastrophic global warming.

The marker for what would be considered “catastrophic” warming was generally agreed to be anything above a rise of two degrees Celsius in global temperature.

“More than 100 countries,” the paper noted, (the actual number was 167 countries) “have adopted a global warming limit of 2°C or below (relative to pre-industrial levels) as a guiding principle for mitigation efforts to reduce climate change risks, impacts and damages.”

The problem was, no one was exactly sure how much fossil-fuel consumption had already contributed to global warming, or how much fossil fuel mankind could consume without going over the two degrees Celsius marker. Those phenomena needed to be quantified.

The team’s conclusion?

Time was perilously short....

http://www.vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/Global+warming+frightenin...

quote:

“Yes, I use Meinshausen’s study,” wrote Prof. Mark Jaccard, environmental economist at Simon Fraser University, in an email. “But I also use about five others that basically say the same thing. The reason they all say the same thing is because the math is trivial — no independent analysts dispute it.

“This is not groupthink,” Jaccard wrote. “Even when we bring in vice-presidents from oil and coal companies to be parts of the study groups, they quietly agree. When you are sitting in a meeting at Stanford (University) with top researchers — and away from your marketing department — it is pretty hard to sustain the myths that ‘business-as-usual’ is OK.”

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Those in power don't give a fig about these studies. Until they see the planet actually completely on fire and the seas boiling, they believe everything is just hunky-dory.

What does the B.C. election mean for No Tankers?

The May 14 provincial election will be a critical moment for the No Tankers network. The next government of B.C. will have the power to stand up to plans to bring more crude oil tankers to our coast, but it’s up to us, British Columbians, to elect strong candidates and to give the next government a mandate for strong action.

So where do the parties and candidates stand?

So far, the Green Party of B.C. is the only party that opposes all bulk crude oil tanker expansion plans for our coast. Additionally, the only sitting MLA who opposes all expansion of oil tanker traffic on B.C.’s coast is Independent MLA Bob Simpson.

The B.C. NDP firmly oppose Enbridge’s proposal, but have not come out against Kinder Morgan’s plans for our south coast. Instead, they are emphasizing plans for a “Made in B.C.” review process. We will have a separate blog covering that in more depth next month.

The B.C. Conservatives support both the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan projects, while the B.C. Liberals are still on the fence with both – sometimes leaning one way, sometimes the other....
