Conservative Party of Canada

There's a general thread about the NDP, where people post their random thoughts about that party.  So, seems a good idea to have the same for the Conservative Party of Canada.

mark_alfred

Here's the "where we stand" page of the Conservatives.  It has a surprising amount of content -- it's more thorough than the other parties.  General theme of safety, honour, and low taxes permeate it.

http://www.conservative.ca/?page_id=44

Here's an interesting statement:

Quote:
unlike the former Liberal Government, we will NOT slash transfers to health, education, or support for seniors.

I recall the 90s when the Libs did cut transfer payments, leading to a huge crisis (particularly in health care).  Horrendous.  I wonder often at people who advocate the Liberals as the lesser evil (and thus support "strategic voting").  Conservatives and Liberals are both abominable, in my opinion.  Anyway, for Conservatives to claim they won't cut transfers from seniors after stating they're going to raise the retirement age from 65 to 67 is a bit rich.

m_a,

thanks for opening these different party threads  Smile

Leadershipwise Dief may have been the best of the lot.

mark_alfred

Harper and today's Conservatives are a disgrace.  Rather than wishing to conserve Canada, as forebears like Dief did, they wish to sell us out to neoliberalism and big business.  There's no longer any real difference between them and the Liberals.

Mulroney learned that if you openly attack seniors it is 'goodbye Charlie Brown'.

All the parties in the House send out partisan flyers using the 10% rule.  The teachers are not amused with their profession being run down. I think I heard someone on the radio say there are 27 MP's with some teaching background including members of the Conservatives.

Look at Harper's experience. He was a flunky at an oil company and went to university and then went into the political game as a far right policy wonk. Not my idea of the kind of experience I want in a PM and his time in office proves it.

Quote:

Conservative Party advertisements that denigrate Justin Trudeau’s past employment as a teacher are an unwarranted attack on the profession and akin to the kind of bullying schools are trying to control, says a national teachers’ organization.

The head of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation says members have been contacting him since the Conservatives began running TV ads that refer to his past as a drama teacher as a sign of his inexperience and unsuitability to lead the country.

“People are very insulted that their profession was targeted in that way,” said Paul Taillefer, president of the federation, a national organization representing about 200,000 teachers. (Taillefer is also a former Liberal candidate who ran unsuccessfully in the 2008 federal election.)

“To say that it is not a worthwhile profession and the skills you garner in a teaching career don’t really count for anything, well, people are pretty upset about that.”

The day after Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal party, the Conservatives unveiled the TV ads that contrast his work experience, including time as a drama teacher, to Prime Minister’ Stephen Harper’s accomplishments in government.

The same message was conveyed in mail-out prepared by the party and offered to MPs to send out at taxpayer expense. Under the heading“INEXPERIENCE,” the document erroneously lists “Drama teacher for 2 years.”

In fact, Trudeau primarily taught math and French in British Columbia, but did fill in for a drama teacher who was a maternity leave for one half-year semester.

Taillefer says about 500 teachers serve as elected officials at the various levels of government.

I think teachers should be more insulted by the fact that they keep calling Justin a teacher. The guy was a drama teacher at a private school. Seriously drama's the class you take when you want an easy credit you don't have to do any real work to get. Its not a class its a glorified extra circular activity.

Just because this thread is about the CPC, doesn't mean you're obligated to adopt their attitude towards the arts. Or labour, for that matter.

He's a Liberal and many of them send there children to private schools. By the way over 11% of BC children go to private schools and all those schools drain resources from our public system. But he's a Liberal and he is not claiming to be anything but one.

The Conservatives are nasty assholes and their type of politics is toxic. You commented on the fact he was only a drama teacher and the blackboard had math on it. It seems he taught more math than drama so in fact your petty little comment was just out to lunch.  I still can't figure out why you are attacking him for being what he is a Liberal. Now if he tries to pretend he is a social democrat I will join in but so far we only have one small "l" liberal doing that.

If Dief were alaive today, he would be a NDPer.

The pre-Mulroney PCs were more similar to today's NDP than the present-day Cons.

The policies of successful conservative premiers like WAC Bennett, Peter Lougheed, Duff Roblin, Leslie Frost, Bill Davis, Robert Stanfield, and Diefenbaker bear more resemblence to the current NDP than the policies of Harper, or the Ontario, Alberta, or Manitoba "Progressive" Conservatives.

socialdemocrati...

Yeah, the emphasis is on the "2 years", not on the teacher part.

I would like to see attack ads in Canada banned for what it is, hate speech.

Each and every one of us has said something that can be wildly taken out of context if edited to do so. There are a thousand other things our political parties can spend their (our) money on than these stupid childish ads.

mark_alfred

If in a year or so it looks like Harper's not doing well, then I wonder if he'll resign?  Wilf proposed this a while ago.

I suspect not.  But it is an interesting thought.

Ippurigakko

I hope so! He will resign next year when he turns 55 become retire?? then vote conservative new leader then election day is likely in autumn 2014? if so, then good news conservative will more lost seats to third place(?) and switch to other parties....

That's my hope.  Conservatives plunge to third while the NDP and Liberals battle it out for government.

With cyber bullying being so much in the news over the last few years people are beginning to accuse the Conservatives of being the country's most conspicuous bullies. It should be no wonder that we have a huge problem with bullying when our government freely uses bullying to further their agenda. It will be impressive if those who oppose the Conservative's policies can oppose the Conservatives without emulating their bully tactics.

If the Conservatives start getting stereotyped as bullies, it might hurt the chances of people like Jason Kenney and John Baird of replacing their bully-in-chief and enhance the prospects of people like Bernard Lord, Jim Prentice, and Peter McKay.

Is the NDP dream running against two pretty boys Justin and Peter?

Brachina

While I'd be okay with some rules on Political Ads, I would not support a ban on so called negative political advertizing, parties need to be able to crititize each other.

Is Babble allowing homophobic posts as long as it's from long time posters?

kropotkin1951

Go away you nasty man. Most of your comments in the last 24 hours have been attacks on posters and moderators.  Why are you here?

The term pretty boy has nothing to do with gay men it is a term used to describe heterosexual males with certain traits.

Quote:

Definition of PRETTY BOY : a man who is notably good-looking;

mark_alfred

I don't know about "the NDP dream", but my dream certainly is for the NDP to win and have a society that is more egalitarian than what I anticipate would be provided by a win by either the Conservatives or Liberals.  So, in spite of embittered naysayers that I occasionally run itnto, I'm staying optimistic and hopeful.

Well then, as long as we accept your version of a historically homophobic slur we are in the clear. "Pretty boy" has most definitely been used to disparage the male gay community, and all the dictionary quotes you link to merely underlines your inability to perhaps recognize that even people who live on the Salish Sea can harbor intolerant views.

Very wise.

kropotkin1951

Fly screw off and leave me alone. I don't need your shit. You are not debating anything with me you are just hurling insults.

flymeetointment

As much as you might like to make this about me, I'm afraid I can't allow that. I'm sorry. Just fess up and move on. A photo from the nineteen thirties does NOT bolster your position. "Pretty boy" "Fairy" "Pansy" "Fruit".

"Is the NDP dream running against two pretty boys Justin and Peter?"

So you are saying now that you believe thay are...gangsters? Come clean. Hephaestion would have demanded no less. The spirit of Babble demands no less. If we are not honest at least with ourselves we are lost.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Hi flymeetointment (again!). If you believe something another babbler has posted is offensive, just flag it and move on! That's what we prison trustees are here for. Of course, based on the way you've been insulting posters left and right, it's hard to take your objections as genuine. So what do you say we just let bygones be bygones and you can continue to dazzle us with your brillinat political commentary (in the spirit and honour of Heph, natch).

flymeetointment

So I need to be critical only sparingly before I can be considered genuine? Check. And if a moderator is willing to let homophobic remarks slide, well who am I to object.

mark_alfred

In the last budget, the Cons put a tariff on imports from Asia.  I think both the NDP and Liberals decried this as bad policy.  For instance, the NDP seemed to refer to this as an iPod tax, and the Liberals referred to it as a little red wagon tax.

I actually was happy with news of this tariff.  Making it harder for multinationals to undercut local production via shipping production offshore seems like good policy to me (especially in light of the recent tragedy in Bangladesh.)  Can anyone clarity this for me?

monkey see monkey do

10 percenters? If it's in an envelope, it's not  10 percenter. The rules (thankfully) changed on those a few years ago so MP's can only send them into their own riding.

If it's in an envelope, it's direct mail. I have one somewhere that I got from the former Member for Toronto-Danforth, who sent hundreds of thousands of such pieces into NDP "target" ridings over the years.

Harper on cbc talks about constitution battles

he say "Obviously, the messages will speak for themselves," he said of the flyers. "I look forward to a vigorous debate over the next couple of years."

does it mean he seeking re-elect in next elections? not resign?

Michael Moriarity

Someone in Harper's position can't admit that he is even considering resigning until the very last minute. If he did, his power would evaporate in seconds, and everyone would be thinking about his successor, rather than himself. Therefore, we can conclude nothing from statements which indicate that he will be contesting the next election.

Canada already has some pretty potent POLITICAL LIBEL LAWS

Regardless, if attack ads become banned expect that legal tool to be used as a noose around the neck of progressive activists like this group or various advocacy organizations, as the blury concept of attack ads as hate speech is used to stiffle criticism.

If this continues, perhaps former conservative voters will consider voting strategically for the NDP to stop the Liberals.

u right, they maybe switch to NDP to stop liberal,

remember NDP went to Reform in 1993-1997, so they will back to NDP in 2015, logic?

Thanks for putting this up.

We should not take this as bad news..Harpers brand is being destroyed and he is hovering around support from only 1/4 of the population..The mandate well be more and more questioned as far as right to enact policies. It is getting to the point for him that the cracks have been exposed and his supporters of convenience will begin to depart..This is good.

Now it is going to become a battle ( or should i say discussion ) between who would be the next best PM..Despite the  current madness over a new face i think Mulcair is very well situated and equipped intellectually to win this... We will lose some of the youth and Conservatives to Trudeau, but i believe seniors, immigrants, intellectuals, enviromentalists will gradually move to Mulcair and the ndp becasue of where we stand..As well as final momentum as the election approaches.. Mulcair is going to win this in the end i believe.

PrairieDemocrat15

I think the chickens are finally coming home to roost for Harper and his Reformers. There was actually a good article in the NP recently about how Harper's real legacy will be his approach to politics. I think voters are fed up with the Cons personal attacks, bully tactics, and self-promotion. Harpers assult on Mulcair and the NDP didn't stick. His personal attacks on Trudeau have backfired (some Con MPs are refusing to mail out the partisan, anti-Trudea "ten-percenters"), and the latest round of action plan ads have been criticized. After ten years of Harperism the Conservative Party's will have a strong legacy of opportunism, nastiness, and cynicism.

Canada's political culture would be well-served by Harper's departure.
